Apparently, my letter had some effect. After bitching a bit, the site owners contacted EA, realized what I said was true, and has gone free:

We have now gone to a free site asking for Donations to keep the
site up and going as of now. All subscribers have been cancled and will no longer be charged to download anything from this site. Due to the each game rules we will follow them. We do have to pay over $60.00 for the site each year and for bandwidth. Please do not abuse this fact or the site will have to be removed if enough donations are not made to the site. The donantions are none refundable and states that with in Paypal. Thank to my phone call to paypal they left me switch back to a donation site.

...with a caveat, of course...

I do want all of you to know that any thing that was on the subscription site will not be on Main Streets Sims for downloading. These files will never be released to the public it would not be fair to the ones that have been with me for years now *2* thank you for understanding about all of this supporters.

Which means the now unavailable files will go to the graveyard when it reopens.

But... to be honest, I had never heard of the site, so I had to go to it via Google. But I couldn't see the statement there, and no guestbook or any other contact information. Otherwise I would have left them a nice note...

Sweet Huzzah! I never understood how that site managed to scam their Y group members out of $5 dollars per person to access their donation area. Then there were those mysterious 'we need money bad' drives they held on frequent occasion claiming overage of bandwidth. Yeah right. ¬_¬

Susim, they do put up sets in their files section but mainly always put the uh...better sets at the main site to fatten their purses.

Captain Berg, they sent the statement via their group mail or on the archives. I got one this morning and laughed my ass off.  :lol:
