I've said this before, but I think it's worth saying again. In my business, we have (legitimately) used a name -- just a name -- to find someone's address, telephone number, date of birth, and SSN, as well as information about their relatives and their relatives' private information. So someone who doesn't choose to share that information over the internet has reason to be upset if that choice is taken away from them. Also, I know this was a few pages back, but macaque don't throw around terms you don't understand. You seem to be making an effort to portray yourself as smart and everyone else here as stupid, but, just so you know -- defamation means publishing information that is false. It doesn't mean posting truthful information, particularly when evidenced by actual pictures.

Seems like an "Occam's razor" situation to me. The simplest explanation is usually the best. All evidence points to Walt being hopeless, including his own statements. Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen any evidence that supports him being some great mastermind.

In response to the complaints, they're now just requiring you to confirm that you are 18 to access the site. I joined (briefly) and posted something and then made another complaint. Looks like someone named "addy787" joined the site the same day all the changes were made, so I suspect this person is the culprit.

Paden, you beat me to it. My first inclination was to report this nonsense and get it deleted, but I wouldn't want to do so if it would prevent people from using it legitimately.
Edited to add: When you look at this more closely, if seems like a personal attack on SparklePlenty, which, to me at least, makes it even more disturbing. If you click on the name of the person who supposedly made the edit, there's a picture of SparklePlenty (at least I think that's her, if I remember the thread where pirates posted their pictures correctly), and she's obviously black. Her profile has also been edited in a really offensive way. Regardless, of whether the person who edited the site is also black, which is an assumption, this really turns my stomach.

It's only skewed if your drop your lance, go sideways upon your horse and the windmill turns into Mel Brooks. Then, my friend, you need to sit down with a nice drink of whatever and relax.
Thanks, Paden. I'm not there yet, but I'll keep a close watch for these signs!

It's not about "circumventing the first amendment" really - livejournal is a privately owned business, and as such, the first amendment & free speech are completely irrelevant here.
True, but if their actions violate their own terms of service, you can at least cause them a little butthurt by throwing those terms of service in their face. The squeaky wheel, as they say, gets the grease, and in this case, it seems like the TSR folks are more than happy to squeak, squeak, squeak until they get what they want. If the folks on our side start squeaking back, LiveJournal may decide that it's not worth their time to get involved (since their TOS suggest that they're not supposed to get involved anyway). Then again, I make my living tilting at supposed windmills, so maybe I have a skewed perspective.

I finally gave in and signed up on Insane Journal. Paleo, my username is the same as it is here. I'm really furious that livejournal is so quick to delete accounts based on absolute bullshit. I guess because some dumbass throws around words like "defamation" and "slander" without knowing what they mean, that's good enough for the monkeys who run livejournal. Being legally minded, I'm tempted to take a long look at their terms of service and see it I can poke any holes in their practice of blindly suspending people's accounts.

Well, it is posted on a "private" section of the site that only people who have no obligation to keep the information secret have access to. That should make everything okay! I sure am glad to hear their side of the story.

Ah, but what if you are the only person of your name in the world, as am I? Someone shares my real name, and anyone seeing it theoretically could find where I lived using something like Zabasearch (not quite true in my case since for some reason it's not picked up on my current address).
This is so true. I'm an attorney, and we often find witnesses just by using their names. There are databases you can use that, just from a name, can ultimately give you address, date of birth, and even social security number, particularly if your name is unusual. Granted, you're not supposed to use these databases unless you affirm that you're using it for a legitimate purpose, but it's not like they verify that. Also, it may not be illegal to publish someone's email address in and of itself, but if it's a violation of PayPal's terms of service, they may still be legal action you can pursue. You might just have to be creative.

I haven't heard of it - send me some? Just kidding - but you know what I think of when I think Food and San Francisco? Rice-A-Roni. Sorry, but that's your legacy. Thanks, Madion Avenue! Sad but oh so true. I think the Bay Area can claim hippy food as a specialty -- I wonder if there is any other place with so many vegan, sustainable/organic or slow food restaurants. And some of them are so good!

Don't forget to hit the San Francisco Bay Area! It's not only beautiful, the food is wonderful, and the people are funky (in a good way).
Also, the American mid-west isn't so boring. The middle of the country has some of the most amazing scenery. If you've never been to see the Grand Tetons, you're really missing something. It was the first time I saw something that seemed the very definition of the word "awesome."
