Ahhhh, yes, America the fucked up, what would we do without her on the political scene, eh? America the blunt, where we try to teach our kids to speak their minds and shorten the shit, only to have the shit dished out by politicians sucking dick for public office. America, the bread basket for so many other places, that won't even help to feed their own kids and families forced to live on the damn streets because of greed and stupidity. America the selfish, who every time help is needed, be it military or monetary, is out there on a limb spending the blood of our men and the bank accounts of our peoples to help those in dire need of relief from natural disaster or to rid themselves of a fascist regime. I don't always agree with what is decided by my nation, but I live here. It's my home, right or wrong. My anscestors as far back as the country goes on my grandmother's side were in the military supporting freedom and shedding their blood to obtain it for themselves or others. The more recent anscestorial links did the same when they got here. We make mistakes, we drop the ball, we ain't perfect. But, we're always up for a challenge, even as we create them. Not always proud of what gets done in the name of almighty progress/dollar,  but I'm proud of the people who serve their country and families, love 'em to death for doing it. Never spit at a vet in my life, and won't. They've done too much for that sort of disrespect. They shed blood, sweat and tears; as do their families waiting for them to come home. If anyone has the perfect way to run a country, I'd love to see it in demonstration. I don't know about anyone else, but I try to judge a country by the person I meet from that location, not by their government. Ahhhhhhhhhh, America, land where we can freely admit our fuck ups and not have to be stoned for it. Although, being stoned isn't always a bad thing...

I have already decided what I'm voting in the election, based on core values within the Labor party - for me it's Kevin 07. I hate the move towards all the values that Paden points out above, native to the Liberal viewpoint here.  I want more hospitals for people, more stuff for poor people.  The needy aren't on the Liberal government agenda - unless it's forcing them into jobs where their rights are taken away.

I myself am under the voting age (15, in case anyone was wondering) and I don't really know the political ins and outs of the upcoming election. I can only say who I believe will win. I believe Kevin Rudd will win, but he will just get by. I know some hardcore Howard fans who don't want to see him go. Yet Rudd was got a lot of followers as well, who believe Australia needs new leadership.

The Greens lost the plot years ago. Unless they have done something dramatic, which they seem constituionally incapable of doing, voting Green is not even worth it for the protest value. Independent is the way to go, as long as they have some merit, as they have a knack of actually getting in at times.

NB: I have not lived in Oz for nearly 3 years so in that time the Greens might have found someone with a brain to help them.

Cap FW... yeah I didn't share that viewpoint until I watched a show on ABC with the leader of the Greens and they were talking about work relations.

I see no point in voting for independents when it's not a senatorial vote.  In the Senate, they do some good (barring the "keep the bastards honest by betraying the public" Democrats) - they can often influence policy that way because they can tip the balance.

But in the Lower House - they're nothing more than annoyances who get ignored.  

And to Capt. - Senator Bob Brown hasn't been doing too badly - although everyone just ignores him.   :lol:

And if anyone actually wants to anticipate and keep up with politics, Lateline on the ABC is the best way to do that - Howard and Rudd both watch it nightly, and Howard actually mentioned it in parliament one day.   Every Wednesday night coming up to the election, they'll be having a political pundit from one of the parties comment on politics this week.  This week it was Julia Gillard and the accusations that she was a communist

I just *love* that accusation!   God, it cracked me up tonight when I was watching the 7.30 Report!  (Kerry O'Brien, in the words of Trudy Cooper, is a national treasure!)

Socialism automatically equals communism now?  Yah wuh? And I think most left-wing politicians go through a phase of being in some sort of low-ranking socialist party in university.  

I never foresaw the day where I'd be discussing politics on a Sims 2 board.  I really didn't.  LOL!

Bob Brown is fantastic. I worked (shock horror) as a public servant in Canberra for a number of years and Bob does know his shit, it’s not the political diatribe that is spouted off by many of the major party pollies I had to deal with. He does expect quite a bit from the party members as well. And Bob walks the walk. The number of times I saw him on his bicycle in the mornings riding to work (no matter if it was –2C or 38C ), earned him my respect. That he would chat to you freely about anything while waiting at the lights earned my vote.
