THANKS THIS IS GREAT

Today I was walking with a friend of mine--a gamer, no less--and mentioning something about paysites.  He goes "Wait.  What?  There are sites that charge for game content?  That's just stupid!  Can they do that?"

And it amused me.

If you have any similar stories, do share.

Actually I do. I have a friend who works for Gamespot (And gets paid well enough to live in the Bay Area. Bastard.), and he was one of the people who maintained the Sims 2 page. They had added a few mods and hacks, as was pretty usual with games, with links back to the site and creators. For the first time ever, since he has worked there, he got angry emails from the creators yelling that he had stolen their content and violated their rights. Ordinarily, modders are thrilled to get a mention on Gamespot.

Agast, the next time I was visiting he asked me whether everyone in the sims community was insane. I said that yes, for the most part, they are. I explained the paysite thing, and he was shocked and appalled. In no other game community, regardless of time, effort and artistic ability, do custom modders charge for content. The idea was insanely ludicris to him.

So yeah, basically, everyone else in the gaming world thinks we are a bunch of nutters.

The sims community is a bunch of nutters, yes. I'm more from the REST of the gaming world, so naturally I see these sim-behaviors as the behavior of nutters and vomit bile in their eyes as a result. Thus this site.

I just wonder if the rest of the Sims community realizes everyone else thinks we're nutters.  Just for the paysite thing, I mean, not mentioning the spending hours playing "Barbies," as my husband calls it.

They don't realise it anymore than fan girls/boys realise how weird they are, and if they do realise it, then chances are they embrace it and make it a point to be nutters.

It's more of a god thing to me--and to my dad and brother, who played TS1 when I still played it.  If it weren't for my dad I wouldn't have known a damn thing about custom content.

Your dad too, huh?  I started playing Sims 1 after my dad got a bootleg copy and was showing me his house of black people that he made fight each other.  A terrible racist my dad may be, but I was hooked on The Sims after that.  xD

Hmm... stories... like... gossip?

Well, the Sims 2 community has its share of... special people, right? Some faking their death, some who are into child porn, others who spread personal information about certain people, ...! We have created a helluva nice society.

I find myself spending more time on board, downloading, organizing my downloads and bining hair color than actually playing. I guess that's the same for pretty much everyone here, right?

I meant more stories about non-simmers finding out some simmers charge money for game content, but I'm always for gossip.   Cheesy

And, yeah, I totally spend more time downloading and organizing than actually playing.  Since finding this site that's all I've done, in fact.  xD

My boyfriend is really into MMOs and the like. He thinks the entire Sims thing is a waste of time and "not a real game." Even lower in regards to the community, though he's been entertained by the contents of this site and the whole situation.

My mother accused me of having a God complex. I only wonder why it took her so long to figure that out.

My girlfriend was shocked about the whole Sims Community. She's also a Sims2 fan in some ways, but not that much I think.

She thinks I'm fucking crazy, because I pay for some "donation" sets, and I have to say, she's right.

I stopped telling people I play the game along time ago, even though techinically I don't really spend much time playing it anymore anyway.  It's far to complicated of a process to try to explain what the game is about and why I like to play it, I think unless you have given it a try, you wouldn't understand.  I certainly thought it was stupid when my boyfriend bought TS1, until I played it out of bordum and then had become hooked.

I did however try to explain this whole custom content copyright crap at one point to my Uncle, who is an attorney, back when the SFV first opened and we had all these "threats" of creators "suing" us.  He was pretty much baffled at the thought of adults fighting over computer files.

Edit: computer files probably the wrong term, files for a computer game is more what I meant.

The "rest of the gaming community" is made up of mostly computer savy, Internet savy young people. The Sims phenom attracted mainstream sheeple. There goes the neighborhood.

I spend more time downloading and on a couple forums than actually playing.
To be honest, I actually have a hard time playing without falling asleep.
It's weird.
I've never really talk to anyone I know about sims.
I haven't discussed it with anyone beyond explaining what it is.
I don't really care to.

Well now you've gone and concisely summed up the whole problem.

I do fall asleep if I play too much. Oh... and when playing University as well. Damn, that's boring.

Whenever I talk about Sims with a friend, they keep calling us Sims Freaks. It's funny. People I talk to believe prices on paysites are very high... then again, we complain about everything being expensive in life. Cheesy
