We've had a few letters to the editor in newspapers from Americans about how they didn't know Aussies hated them until they got here - which of course makes us hate them more because they're so damn insular.  Our nickname for Yanks here in Queensland is "Seppos" - a rhyming slang insult (Yank - Septic Tank - hence Seppos).

That is really too bad.  Americans love Australians.

I am an American and I don't hate Americans or America.  I just pretty much don't like people.  I like individuals, but not people in groups.  I hate the whole mob mentality.

I can relate, I am an Australian and I don't hate 'individuals' but the mob and sheep mentality of some collective groups is another issue.

I have many friends of different backgrounds, and consequently many American friends both here in Australia and overseas... I do find that my US friends living in their home country do tend to be somewhat 'insular and live within their comfortable box of reality' but I can't hate them for that.

Australian's are easy going people and all, but tend to like to poke fun at most and don't take anything seriously, not even ourselves.

WOW! I never knew so many people generally hated Americans. I mean hating American government for what it does, or hating certain people who just happen to be from the US, sure, but not a country as a whole.

It's funny, I have not run into anything any of you are saying in my travels and neither has my husband (who travels for more extensively than I do). He has been from Indonesia to Russia to Europe to Eastern Europe and in each place he has hit a few cultural barriers, but nothing that would make him hate another. In fact it is just the opposite, he learns about them and then ends up becoming close friends with the people he is around from those countries. We have friends all over the world. In each country he has always found that they were so damned nice it just makes you want to pack up and move there.

Go figure I never knew that so many just hated indifferently based on a stereotype with a lack of knowing the people themselves. We don't so maybe that is why this takes me a back a little. Maybe we have just had a great time in whatever place we were because we don't prejudge. If we did we would have thought that German's were over confident to the point of being conceited, or that the Romanians were all gypsies who were out to steal your children, or all Indonesians were a part of the Taliban and wanted to see the Americans dead or all the French people were dirty, smelled and were arrogant... Nope I don't prejudge and everyone I have ever met abroad has been wonderful (except for the 2 security agents in Paris. LOL) and made me feel so much at home that I wanted to jump ship and move.

Maybe it is that were are a little older than some here, or maybe it is that we go into a new country with respect for who they are and their country... I don't know, but I certainly didn't know that so many hated Americans as people. I did know the hate and discontent for our government, but not people in general.

ETA: I know a lot of the stuff said was "tongue in cheek" but I did get the sense some of it was serious.

Well, but many countries base their opinion of a people on their government.  Its even worse when its an elected government, no matter if it was a rigged election twice over.

I don't dislike any nationality.  But then, I consider myself a citizen of the world, not just one country.

Personally, I hate Americans as a group, after years of watching television, and watching the stupid stereotypes of Australians, but have no problem with an individual, and often find them quite nice.

So South Park hit it right on the head? Well, if that's the worst it comes to than Australians can't hate us that much. Cute little rhyming insults aren't exactly mean. And for some reason I picture two people giggling and whispering to each other when I think of them saying "Seppos".
And the television is a really bad thing to use to judge Americans. Or so I'd like to think. There are many Americans who hate the ones on TV. It's nothing but garbage.

Ignorance and the like are not exclusive to Americans, and anyone who thinks they are is a complete moron. Yes, we suck hard. So do you. It's just stupid to insult all Americans by lumping us into one group. We aren't the Borg, you know. The "typical" Americans being spoken of are what the actual typical Americans call "extremists".
I've said "Americans" too much. And just in case it seems that way, the last bit wasn't directed at you, calalily.

Maybe I am odd, but I don't. I don't base my opinion on people of a country based upon their government, elected or not.  That would mean that I would view the British people as Bush's little bitches because Blair seems to appear that way now (and he was elected). To me that makes no sense. Why would I say that ALL people of a certain country must be "that" way because their elected officials are? Elections can be rigged, "modified to suit" and outright tampered with. Also some "vote" to put someone in office because they are the "lesser of two evils." In other words just because the officer is "elected" by no means shows that ALL people of that country are that way. I have no real opinion of a country or its people until I actually meet them, but then again like I said maybe I am just different.

Thanks Lemmiwinks Smiley But credit for any mutating Thomas/Atwa nigtmares that may occur goes to sherrie_sim, the avi was her brainchild (or should that be bastard child).

I don't think Australians actually HATE Americans or anyone else (with the possible exception of the All-Blacks and the English ashes team), they just like to have a jab at anyone, anytime, anywhere...including themselves. Nothing is off limits, but it's (mostly) in good humour. It's such a dry, deadpan sense of humour, a lot of people take it too seriously when they're just being a smart ass Cheesy

C'mon - stereotypes exist not because we believe them to be true but because we all love and cherish them! I do! I love to generalize and poke fun at cultural and/or national stereotypes - because I know they are all fabrications and charicatures. Furthermore, I LOVE to hear people's prejudice about myself and my fellow countrymen (Swedish. Please share!).

These things don't even have to go international - one country doesn't have to be really big for the regional stereotypes to flourish. They're just as fun.

I think most people here - heck, all of us! - are smart enough to know the difference between the stereotype and the boring truth (which is that people are much the same everywhere).

But that mustn't stop us from a bit of poking and teasing, right?

How I see the citizens from different parts of the world:*

Americans: Loud, bossy. Believe themselves to be better than everyone else. Fat.
Germans: Rude, extremely disciplined. Believe themselves to be better than everyone else. Only eat sauerkraut and drink a lot of beer. Fat. Have mullets.
French: Arrogant, smelly, hairy and stink of garlic. Believe themselves to be better than everyone else. Only eat snails and frogs.
Finnish: Are all very depressed. Drink vodka and stab each other (in that order).

I'm too tired to type anymore. Please help me complete the list.

*If this offends you - please read the first part of my post again.

I don't either.  But, people as a group are their own entity, outside of individuals inside of that organism - or else we wouldn't have mob mentalities out there Cheesy

TV is not a good source for factual information. It is biased, and is run by a small group of rich idiots.

Of course I don't think tv is reality - but seeing as American everything permeates here, I have a lot more to hate Americans for - Subway, McDonalds, Coke - many things, as well as the beliefs that some Americans have that we ride kangaroos to school etc.

Quote from: "Ink"

That's specialised for them, and pretty damn insulting, as far as I'm concerned.

Quote from: "tomato"

Nah - that's part of the reason for the hate - you love the quintessential Aussie "blokes" and kangaroos, and ocker speech - not actual Australians.  The parodies of Steve Irwin and Crocodile Dundee - those are what you love - not Australians in a fully dimensional way, with actual facets to their personalities.

Quote from: "Bigtruckgirl"
WOW! I never knew so many people generally hated Americans.

Well I have 400+ posts here and I haven't told you yet - most of the Americans I meet online are people I wish to talk to, and when we went to LA (and before you ask, we won a trip - it's not our secret desire to go there) we met all kinds of nice people - I didn't go around punching people in the face.

Quote from: "Silvercoin"

Whisper - you've gotta be joking.  An American hears that and it's in their face with a loud "Stupid fucking seppo - fuck off".  Australians like the swearing, and do lots of it.

That's classic, I tell you. And accurate, at least as much as it can be.
But I'm terribly sorry. I'm not entirely certain of Swedish stereotypes. I think it's "tall, blonde, likes to hike" or something. And polar bears roam the cities and everyone listens to Abba. Hmm.

Now THAT would be a hilarious thing to see when you walk down the street. Only problem would be having to dodge all the darn kangaroos. What do you squeeze to make it honk? Don't you people have cars?
... What? You mean you DON'T ride kangaroos to school? Well, what do you ride, then? Crocodiles?
Now that you mention it, I see why Australians might be really irritated with the whole "Americans are amused by you" thing.
Try UrbanDictionary and search for your country. Read the keywords, they're actually pretty funny. Australians mainly get koala, kangaroo, stingray, beer and mate...
Guess that's better than fat, gay, idiot, ignorance, stupid, obese, redneck, shit, retard, dumbass, evil, fascist, nazi, Canada.
