Plus they allow distribution of these materials (.package format) for non-commercial use. This site is non-commercial (money is only being lost here), and not many paysites can say that.

Yup, donations are normal. The moment you start asking for donations to give out a certain object, it's no longer a donation. Putting up a tip jar in your café would be concidered asking for voluntary donations, while saying "If you give me money, you can have this muffin!" is a SALE.
