And yet, though I live in the USA, far too many people use the French pronunciation, which makes me want to kick someone in the teeth.

How do you pronounce it then?

Narkeasha. =| But for some reason they always add an I before the a which makes it Narkeashia. I asked one teacher why she did that and this was her reply. I swear she said this "Well because all black people have i's in there names right?" I couldn't even be mad at her because she sounded so pitiful and ignorant.

 My only black friend's name is Dhool (and NOBODY can pronounce that so we have leave to call her whatever we like. 'Doll' and 'Mother Goose' are my personal favourites).

I think it's more like saying "All girls' names end with an -a". A lot of names do, but it's such a blatant untruth that it's hard to argue against it other than saying "errr... no"?

In Latin, maybe.  But even then you have names like Geta, which is a male's name.

I'm black, and my name is ***. There's no i in it.
Of course I've had quite a few people call me "ContesTa" which I hate!
And even one girl in high school called me Francesca.
And a male friend from high school use to emphasize the first part to sound like "CUNT-essa".
He was such a diva.

I'm from Italy. Did you know that Contessa means "countess"?

I have a pretty simple name, Rachel, yet EVERY single person I've met asks how to spell it. Thanks to people who add an extra "A" towards the end, like Rachael or Racheal. Maybe it's just me, but that second "A" is totally unnecessary. Not to mention the random "Y" and "T" people sometimes think belong in my name.

Also, my clever (a.k.a. jackass) father gave me the initials RAT on purpose, because my mother's are CAT. Hilarity ensued!

My mother got my first name from Anjelica Huston, the actress, and then my middle name from a little girl on a soap opera.  *pat pat*  We're on the same boat. ^^

I love the names McKenzie, Genevieve, Guinevere, and Phoenix.
I use to like the name Shiloh but damn Angelina Jolie...that bitch.
There will be about a million Shiloh's walking around by the time I start having kids.

My high school friend, 20 years ago, named her daughter Shiloh.  Wasn't it Neil Diamond that sang that song "Shiloh, the night is young"?  Yep...that shows my age.

When I hear Shiloh I think about the book about the dog and it being abused. x_x

I HATE when people name their child after months. It bugs me Sooo much. I know a girl named August and I refuse to call her that so I just call her Ogie (OH GEE *hard g*) I also hate when people try to be all cool and name their kid after the sun or moon in a different language. Although I do love the name Selene.

How exactly did we get on this topic?

I use to think August was a girl's name. The people started telling me it was a guys name.
If you consider Augustus, then August does sound more like a male name.
I prefer the name Augustus or Augustine rather than August though.

My mom said if I was a boy she was gonna name me Courtney.
*thanks God she was born with a vagina*

OH! When I was in 8th grade, my health teacher, Mrs. Showers, left to have her twin girls.

She named them.....yeah...you probably guessed already....

April and May.

Those girls are almost 30 now. I hope they either got married or changed their names. I can't imagine going through life as April Showers.
