Well, back when I grew up, the TV sets and stereos were all in wooden cabinets. Yes, I am old. I was born in '65.

Coming out of lurkage for a moment here, but when I went shopping for a new TV this week we came across a flat panel 19" LCD in wood effect made by this company
SWEDX
Not something I would buy but maybe there is a market somewhere again for wood covered electrics!
Also I found this post by the lady herself describing her work, she has it on the button

I was born in 74 but I don't recall anything that looked quite like that. If I had, then I'm sure my childhood would have scared me. Look at the radio! never seen a so called wood grained boom box. Thats just cruel and unusual.

I, too, was born in '65. I remember our old, HUGE dark wood cabinet TV, with the tiny screen, lol....and only 13 channels....although we did get the UHF channels 28 and 52. Channel 52 was what all the japanimation cartoons like Speed Racer, and Kimba were on. And no remotes, either. You got up from the couch and changed channels manually.
LOL......

1962 here, and the first color tv we had looked like the one in Freetime. TV in the middle with AM/FM radio on one side and a record player on the other (you lifted the wooden tops to get to them). We needed this huge rooftop antenna with a signal booster on a 50 foot pole just to get half way decent channels (2-13). Only a couple of UHF channels came in (26 and 39), one had wrestling on Saturday nights, and the other showed movies. No cable, video tapes/dvds, and if you missed a show, you had to wait for the repeat (it was a big event when they showed The Wizard of Oz, party time). And of course, back then, FM was strictly for classical type of music, no REAL radio station would even consider being an FM station!

I still have one of those console TV's.
It works better than the newer ones we've got...lol.
Had it since I was born.

'67 here, and I remember those TVs and such - was so sad, my last turntable [not counting my ion] was in one of those old-fashioned cabinets. Those were so beautiful too. One of the things we here in our house wanted to do was to make outercases like that for computers. Polished, carved wood cases so that you could have a computer in your living rom and not have it stand out so much.

My mother was such a nut for decorating shit that the cabinets on stereo and TV had to match the bookcase and the wood on the furniture. I just wish that I had the Art Deco stuff that her parents had, it was gorgeous and when they passed away, my aunt sold it at public auction. Greedy...

The closest thing we had to "Art Deco" was the MLK, Jesus and Kennedy three pane wall/picture clock! I actually miss that!

Is that better or worse than the commemorative plates my grandparents collected from every state they visited? My family actually fought over who would
have
to take them home.

Dude, my grandpa collected beersteins. They were EVERYWHERE. When he died, my grandma found out quite a few of them were worth quite a bit so she sold em. She was moving from their big 5 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom apartment. Can you blame her? With the money, she got a nice new TV for watchin' Jeapordy on.
No, seriously. Watching Jeapordy with my grandma (who just turned 80) was one of the best memories of my childhood. She'll yell at the TV, call the contestants idiots. It's a wonder she never went on the show. She would have cleaned up.

Eek. This reminds me of the time we cleaned out my Great-aunt's house for her.
You have never
seen
such a huge..."collection"...of useless crap. It was truly horrifying.
Also, her cats/dog peed on the rug all the time so it smelled
awful
.
EDIT:
Yikes, Peggy.

My grandmother still has a velvet Elvis. In the living room. She doesn't even listen to his music or anything, she just thinks he "looks nice".
