Aw shucks, thanks  Grin

I'm working on a house next - BIG challenge for me. My houses are usually square, or two oblongs stuck together, on a perfectly flat lot. I'm not usually that fussed, as long as I can fit everything I need in them. Time to go upmarket, a little. I want a basement on this one, so that should be interesting  Cheesy

Here's a tip that our dear Hecubus gave me way back when. When making your basement, make sure the foundation is hollow. Take the connecting stairs and put one set in. When that is done, add another set to the landing that the first set made. Then add a third step to that and it will be deep enough. Take the leveling tool and bring it all to the lowest level, delete the steps and finish leveling. Then it's all ready to add walls. Beats the old method of flattening one square twelve clicks down...

Thanks Paden. That is most useful! I've been trawling looking for tutorials and my head is fair buzzing now  Cheesy I found Mikeinside, and there is a LOT of stuff on there. I've read too much *wibbles*

When I have perfected some more advanced building techniques (hah), I'm going to have a go at making my own walls/floors/ground textures, to really personalise things.

But, for now, building techniques, it is  Grin

Thank our fair ax-wielding Lady Hecubus for the tip, I only passed on her tutelage. She has a knack for explaining stuff clearly and simply that sticks with you better than thousands of technical terms would ever do. Have fun!

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I'm a little apprehensive after seeing the gorgeous lots before in this thread and its parent, but I figure that what I did was better than the stuff in the Ugliest Paysite thread, so...

I've never been much on building, but I followed a plan this time (http://www.houseplans.com/plan_details.asp?id=29708) and have sadly learned that I think I kinda suck. The outside looks all right, if not slightly boring, but the back of the house, and the interior is...meh, at best? So, I come to all of you, hat and rum in hand, in hopes of some real constructive critiques. Do your best/worst with me, people. I'm thick-skinned.

As I was saying, the front of the house looks all right, if not a little bland. I figure some more landscaping, since this is a work in progress, and some deck clutter would help a little. My idea of landscaping is usually throw a tree in the corner and call it a night. Heh. Unfortunately, the few little inspired touches I put in don't show, like using a darker ground cover under the decking area, to make it a little more shadowed.

zomg, side view, and yes, the bottom of the chimney matches the rest. I'm guessing that's just a shadow, because it matches on the back view. Again, hints for landscaping?

And the mighty back, which is...the back. And boring. I'm all about symmetry, so if I were to add a deck to the master suite, I would also need one for the other side, which is the en suite bathroom. The house is almost on the back of the lot, because I was using a narrow house plan that's intended to take up the whole lot. But still, there has to be something that can be done.

I probably spent almost an hour getting this little corner right, and I'm rather proud of it, but it's about the ONLY good furniture setting that I can see in there. The opposite side looks bland and boring.

Opposite side, including the entrance and the stairs to the second level.

Not bad kitchen, boring as hell dining room.

AND ground floor shot. I have no clue as to what to do with the big empty space there, whether to leave it, separate and clutter the area, or what.

I haven't done too much on the second floor yet, aside from the master suite, because I'm not sure whether I'm going to keep struggling with this, or just call it a loss. I like it, a little, but I was really hoping to get away from my usual "throw a box on the ground, separate with walls, throw on a roof, yay insta!house!" routine. I already know that I have to re-do the en suite because I somehow stopped following the routine of the sort of understated colors and kinda connecting theme and made my dream black and white bathroom instead, which really doesn't match the master suite.

So...please be honest? Love or hate it? Any advice, ideas, or helpful hints?

Oh, and if it's too graphics-heavy, lemme know, and I'll try to figure out a slideshow instead. That could be an experiment all in itself without throwing in a picture of the Vegas trip, although baby tiger cubs might be better on the eyes. Heh.

Ok, thanks Hecubus  Cheesy

I have hit a problem though, and I can't find anything to remedy it. When I go into build mode, there are build tiles all over the place - floating in the air, and whatnot. It's a largeish area that this problem covers. It's like there are mulitple levels, but there aren't?  Huh

Here's a screenshot - has anyone got any ideas please?

Theria, I really like your fireplace corner area, but that rug is driving me bonkers. I've wondered for some time now if there is a way to make rugs look less funky when placed using SnapObjects. As for landscaping, a little grass never goes amiss. Personally, I've become very dependent on Macarossi's flowers for landscaping, but not so great if you're trying to cut down on CC.

Millie, I'm assuming that you're trying to make all those tiles one level? Use some flooring, but only put it on the level you want, and the game will add more tiles around it. Keep adding flooring until it's all one level. When you're finished and it's all one level, just delete the flooring and you will have uniform blank tiles (if that's what you want).

OK, when I make a house with a basement, I make a solid foundation, then put walls around the whole damn thing. Then, I hollow it out and use Hec's method to dig it out, then put tiles onto the first floor. Put them around the foundation first, that should bring any floaters down. Put flooring onto those and then put the walls into your basement, then the stairs. I've been using Marvine's spiral stairs from MTS 2, love those damn things.

Thanks you guys Cheesy
soulpatrolmn the Banksy art you have in there is a very popular one. When I browsed Google images it came up multiple times, which made me feel like I didn't wanna include it in the set, I'm glad to see you've done it, it looks great!
I shall have a go when I have a day off (weds), for now I'm off to bed to be up for 6am :[

Thanks Paden. I got that bit sorted......and now I'm stuck on the roofs!  Cheesy I've tried the cheat to alter individual roof slope angle (as per snootysims) I followed their instructions, but nada. Nothing is happening. If I use the cheat from nightlife, it works fine (but I don't want them all at a lower angle, just one roof?

This is the instructions I followed - are they correct?

Enter cheat box.
 IndividualRoofSlopeAngle 50 and press Enter.
Now hold down Ctrl and Alt keys and click on the roof section you wish to change.
The roof you clicked on should jump to the angle of 50.
If you want you can "lock" the roofs you have in placea now, although this doesn't affect the height change.
Now for the second slope. Enter cheat box and type in IndividualRoofSlopeAngle 25 and Enter.
The roof you clicked on should jump to the angle of 25.
 Save.

I entered the cheat, held down those keys, and left clicked the icon for the type of roof I wanted. I let go of the keys, and drew the roof as it should be (can't draw whilst holding them down) It appears at it's normal slope.

I'm sure I'm probably missing something - I just don't know what?

Wow Theria I love that house! The only I would suggest is adding more color. I love beige, but usually adding a tad touch of bright colors helps the room stick out more....

as for the rugs I was wondering why they do that? It doesn't do it on my custom rugs, just the maxis ones  Huh

And as promised! In game pictures of the undies! I took them in CAS because I don't like little children running in my neighborhood (yes I play with aging off, and only tots) *I'll just post links since there's quite a few of them.....
