By any random chance do you know anything about what strike and dip are than? My geology book does not explain it well at all.  Angry

No, I can't. I have been away from school 7 years and forgotten a lot (not that I find it less interesting, but my brain needs more space for storing dirty diapers now, I guess).

BUT! I can look it up for you!

dip

The angle between a geologic surface -- for example, a fault plane -- and the horizontal. The direction of dip can be thought of as the direction a ball, if placed upon the tilted surface, would roll. Thus, a ball placed on a north-dipping fault plane would roll northward. The dip of a surface is always perpendicular to the strike of that surface.

strike

The direction, or trend, of the line marking the intersection of a fault plane (or another planar geologic feature) with the horizontal. Strike is always at a right angle to dip.

from http://www.data.scec.org/glossary.html

aaand here is an interactive diagram of strike and dip at work, which kind of illustrates it way better!

I loved Geology in college.  And Archeology is way cool.

I'm about as bad about science as I am about music or crafts or visual arts or.....I just more or less love it all.  but rocks are a part of gems are a part of jewelry making....

What you are saying is true, but I still think that time ago, even criminals thought about: "what would my family say?" "is it normal for me to feel this way?". Anyway, it's just an opinion.

I think we have less of people seeking help for the problem, because we've gone way overboard about it.  No, I am NOT saying that molesting children is no big deal, don't think that.  But, we've turned it into such a huge deal, such a shameful thing, that I think people aren't seeking help because they're afraid they'll be doomed from the get-go.

Child molesting has become the most evil of all crimes, to the point where people want to pass laws in the USA saying that even fictional sex with fictional children is just as evil and deserves the same punishment as having real sex with real children.    We live in a society that will protect your right to write a story about raping someone, killing them, eating half the corpse and screwing the other half, as long as the victim in the story is over eighteen.  But write a story about a sixteen year old girl having sex with an 18 year old boy and people will call you a pervert and suggest you need serious help.   If you do feel you have a problem with being attracted to children and you go to a doctor for help,  a lot of doctors will tell you that you can't be cured. The attitude is that you're doomed for life to have that problem and the best you'll ever be able to do is hold back, but even that is pretty shaky.

With that attitude, it's not all that surprising that a lot of pedophiles aren't trying to seek out help for their problem, they're too scared to do so.  I'm not saying that we should embrace pedophiles with open arms, but I think that someone who seeks help for the problem should be able to find it without having to worry that they're doomed.

On a similar note, a few years ago, I did some research into amateur porn writing (stroke stories, most folks call 'em.) and I found out something rather interesting.  Most of the pedo stories were written by someone the same sex as the "victim" in the story.  In other words, if it was about a young girl being molested, a woman more than likely wrote the story.  If it was about a young boy being molested, the author was most likely a man.  When I asked who they identified with in the story, almost all of them said that they identified with the victim. Very rarely did the identify with the molester.

Regarding the Lolita image, I must say you are perfectly right and I lower my head. Still, those who are not THAT attracted to children, start getting the wrong image. And yes, there is a much higher number related to teens. Maybe my messed up childhood is blurring my mind.

On the other hand, you did have something with the tarting up children for beauty shows being a bad idea.  Yes, a child molester likes children and making children look older is often a turn off.  On the other hand, there have been child molesters who have commented that those little girls in the beauty shows are "asking for it."  Is it justifying something that should never be justified?  Yes it is.  On the other hand, a parent who does put their child into the whole baby beauty show game should keep a careful eye on their child and be doubly sure of anyone the child comes in contact with who isn't a parent or someone well known and trusted.  And even then, you can't always be sure.

Lol, nah. I just genuinely have no interest in sciences. I love history, art, and literature. I think the only "science"y thing that I have an interest in is sociology.

Well see, that's the thing - I'm highly into art, music and literature.  I've been gobbling up books since I was very small, and the same with music, and to a lesser extent visual arts like painting and sculpture.  I've been crochetting, needlepointing, knitting, soap making, candle making, etc ad infinitum since I can remember.

But science and math are at the heart of all of them.

A story I was told goes like this.  During Kennedy's admin. he put together a think tank to figure out the best way to get into space -first-.  All these sceintists said this - The -fastest- way is to emphasize math and science in schools, and neglect the social, language and fine arts.  However, we strongly -discourage- this.

Art, science, language, music, history, etc are all intertwined.  In the old days, a painter had to know about how to mix his or her own pigments, and that involved knowing how to find the proper stone and plants to blend it.  The golden mean - man I had a laugh and 20 when people who were art majors to escape math had to wrap their minds around that one.  And there is art in sciences as well.

At least, that's my observations.

If you don't have a basic grounding in science, you can't understand the world. Any charlatan can sell you anything, because you aren't using that part of your mind.

And I have to wonder, how on earth can you be interested in history and have no interest in science at all? How does that even work? Do you just read biographies of artists or something? Minus Leonardo da Vinci, of course. And anything about the technical side of art, because that is science. Or about where art comes from: psychology is science. Forget reading about anything that has to do with war, inventions, disease, the history of ideas, anthropology, archaelogy, religions (tons of astronomy and medicine there, among other things), ad infinitum.

Are you not interested in the stars? In flowers? In the human body and mind? Animals? Computers? I can't help but think you're confusing "science" with "high level memorization of facts", which is no more science than it is history or art.

All I can think of right now is Jon Bennet Ramsey and how awful it was that poor child had to die. I'm sorry, but I think it was her parents who did her in. I wouldn't be surprised if the father abused her and the mother knew, but kept silent. And children should be allowed to be children, not a miniature adult.

As for me, I love art, music, literature, archeology, and history. My husband's and mine weekend hobby involves history. We are part of a group that recreates the Middle Ages.
