Ugh I would still play neopets if I could remember my password. Sad I was so rich and I had two poggles, a cybunny, and a kougra. I loved them all.  Cry

I joined 6 years ago, back in it's early days, and I lost interest in about a year when all of these noobs started flooding the site due to the LimitedToo exposure (that was '03-ish, during the "Can I haz you pazzword" heyday). I completely forgot about it until 2 weeks ago, when I got this "check out Neopets" e-mail. I too forgot my password. I don't even know what birth date I used, and they require that for log-in verification now. And, get this, I don't know WTF my e-mail was from back then! I tried to get a password reset, but it looks like my pets will just starve and be pox ridden forever.  Sad

And I had a Poogle! Cry

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I joined in 2000.  I would go on every now and then just to play the games.  I wasn't really into it or anything, but since I played a lot of the games a lot, I had a decent chunk of change.  Custom painted most of my pets even.  Then one day, I go on after having not been on for a few months and my inventory is erased, I have no money, and all my petpets were gone.  It was very strange, because my bank account was still the old high account tier, my safety deposit box stuff was there, and no one tried to acquire my pets.  This happened to two accounts with different passwords and both had fairly rare pets like a fairy poogle and a rainbow chombie, but the pets weren't touched.  So I'm more inclined to believe it was something on their end than someone brute-forcing my account's password.

So then I stopped.  I was so proud that none of the pets I made had numbers in their names!  XD

I was a member of Neopets once, I had an account which I grew tired of after a while so I put my pets in the pound and abandoned the account.
A year later I created a new one only to forget username/password. I wasn't good at playing the games so I only earned around 6000gold each day, my greatest wish was to have a fire Ixi.
I checked it out a few months ago only to discover it had gone mostly pay, it's a shame really.

I remember when my favorite KiSS doll site went pay, and they never stopped either.  Sometimes it feels like the world is getting greedier, but then, Neopets has been a commercial venture for a while now, and with the economy, not surprised they went pay.

For folks who like that sort of thing, there is Bella Sara, which you can get a basic horse for free, and the card packs are cheap [ also, seems like no penalty for not always carring for your horses [ maybe because 200+ horses could be difficult.

Other good sites, last I checked - Powerpets was nice, but this was a few years ago - better graphics and while fewer, better games too.

*Sigh* The good ole' days when neopets was free. But I do agree, it was predictable that they would go sub based. I mean, neo plush toys, t-shirts, ball caps. They had the merch waaay before anything else.

There's a potential chocolate shortage. Apparently the caocao trees aren't doin' so hot.

If you are talking about the same site I'm thinking of, I was *pissed* when they went pay.  Donations are one thing but to put a pay wall down on creations that were made for fun, for others to enjoy, and not for financial gain is just so wrong.  Angry

Sometimes it feels like the world is getting greedier, but then, Neopets has been a commercial venture for a while now, and with the economy, not surprised they went pay.
I don't know about now but back when I played, Neopets wasn't run by Americans.  It was a UK site.  I looked it up.  It was bought by Viacom in 2005, but yes, was originally a UK site.  No wonder it's just a greedy hog now.

I was quite into Neopets until my sister's boyfriend stole over 800,000 gold I made, wiping me out.  I pretty much quit after that.  :/  When I quit they were only just starting with the merchandising with keychains and such at Claire's.  I looked at it earlier this year and now you have to spend real money to get anything good on that site.  It pisses me off.

I don't know if anyone else plays, but I'm also on Gaia Online and it's really pissing me off how everything good is pay now and super expensive.  $10 for one pixel item.  >.<

If your really angry MissAngelica, we could start Gaia Online Must Be Destroyed! Seriously though I don't understand where these sites get off selling for pixels. Sad If neopets was free I would have no issues donating to them if I still played.

I hate how Neopets also kinda killed a good chunk of virtual pet games as well. Every flocked to neopets, and left all the others. Sad

I've never played Neopets, but my friends have (and some still do). The ones who quit are kind of mad at it, and the ones still playing think it's great.
They're leeching their parents dry, I'm guessing, since you have to pay to get stuff. My mom would kick me if I asked her for money to play an online game.

Oh, man, I've tried Gaia online and I really don't see what the hype's about. It's icky. 'Gaia Online Must Be Destroyed' sounds like a good idea. Smiley

BalckDwarf: I think the reason a lot of people are concerned about huge pictures in the signatures, for one if it isn't done in moderation it can get a bit annoying, but for two to huge of pictures can make it a pain in the ass for dial up users.

I actually have trouble with the "It isn't fair for dialup!" claim.  For years, when almost everyone had at least a 56.6 modem and most people had highspeed, I was plunking along on a Pentium 166 with a 28.8 modem. Before that, when everyone had a 28.8  modem, I had a 1200 baud modem, and only upgraded when my ISP refused to allow service to anyone who didn't have 28.8 or higher.   So, yeah, I had a magnificently slow system.  Yet, I never had all the major problems that dial up users are supposed to have.  Yes, graphics took forever to load, but I could just read around it, until they did.  If a site was notorious for using lots of graphics, I could always turn them off.

Also, I guess it strikes me as ironic that a site that loves to turn threads into macro heaven has folks that moan about sig graphics on the basis of "it's not fair for dialup!"  Honestly, if someone uses the same sig file for awhile, chances are that the person on dialup is going to cache the graphic.  Then, it'll load up in an instant.  But, fill a page with brand new, huge macros that all have to be loaded and it's going to be a lot more difficult.

(Don't misunderstand the above paragraph.  I find the macros used here to be hilarious and I would never want to see folks stop using them.  However, if the argument truly is for the sake of those on dialup, macros are going to be a lot worse for them than a sig file graphic that rarely changes)

All I want is to be free to express my dislike for something without being crucified for it. I am not a mod, noone really is. All you can do is express wether something annoys you or not. If more people speak up agaisnt said annoying sig, it is STILL ultimatly the owner of the sig wether they want to change it or not.

Okay, so you want the right to express dislike, but you don't want anyone else to have the right to tell you that they disagree with your opinion? Because that's what  it sounds like you're saying to me.    If you have the right to say whatever you want, even if it hurts someone's feelings, or irritates them, or in general just doesn't appeal to them, then don't they have the same right?  Even if it hurts your feelings, or irritates you, or in general just doesn't appeal to you?

Gaia was fun a couple years ago, before I gave up on it. I was a major addict. Then prices started to inflate like crazy and they started releasing dozens of crappy items that are really just advertising to upcoming movies and such and everybody got pissy and elitist. Even storyline developments and holiday events are downgrading! I remember that first Halloween when we had to fight a zombie apocalypse and everybody was being infected...
I can see why newbies in Gaia don't get it anymore: back in my day we could get a couple of cool items for cheap on our first week of playing, a few rares if we were posting regularly and people in the forums were actually nice. Now... I miss Gaia.

ED: Selling pixels? Back when I was in Gaia the only currency there was was virtual. Sure, you could donate for some special items, but you could equally buy those at the Marketplace for "gold" you earned posting, lurking, etc. I don't recall ever existing an option of buying "gold" for real money (a la IMVU), either.

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I joined Gaia in 2003, and got most of the thank you letters for the next couple years, one way or another.  So because of the laws of supply and demand, I'll always be "rich" as long as I don't sell anything.  I did give them a $5 donation several months, but that was back before it had gotten commercialized so much, and I honestly felt like I was just helping keep the servers up.

I remember the first Christmas.  They set up a "donation tree" where if you gave a wrapped gift worth more than like 200 gold, you'd get a Christmas gift.  This gift had Jolly Slippers in it.  Now I don't know how, but somehow a rumor got started that someone got a pair of fairy wings from this thing, so people were throwing all sorts of money and getting nothing but Jolly Slippers.  They were hated for so long!  XD  I remember doing quickie sketches in exchange for those slippers and getting quite a few.  I have fun randomly giving them away when I go back to the site, because they're worth a lot now and were worthless then.

I actually agree with you there.  I also include the screaming at people for quoting images with that.  If it was already on the page, no it does not load twice--it loads once, in both places simultaneously.  I spent enough years on dialup watching images load to know how it is!  XD  If it was on the last page and you were just looking at it, you probably don't have to load it again, either.  (If you do, change your cache settings.)

However, that thread you filled with macros is going to fucking suck for people on slow internet.  But sloooooow internet is now a fairly small minority now, and even a page of pictures is probably a relief in the days of embedding media files EVERYWHERE.

Haha. Wtf? Alright. Thanks for totally misinterpreting me. If people do not agree with me, they can say so and I can take their opinions and do what I deem neccesary with them. It's the way this forum USED to be. People with signatures should take that approach too, they shouldn't feel bullied to take it down if they don't want to. I actually said, I don't give a fuck. Now the "hurting people's feelings" bit made me lol. I'm a pirate. I do not give a shit if my honesty burns, it's the reason I started posting in this forum. For the honesty.

People irritate me all the damn time. And the only time anyone "hurts me" is when I let them. Now, your opinions are valid and I understand your point of view. In the end, I will say this: I started posting and joining this forum because NOONE was afraid to tell it how it is. And now you are telling me that I should censor my words in case I hurt someone? Please. Don't make me laugh.

Edited: Typo's suck.
