i am sorry if this is the wrong section.and im sorry if i am not supposed to post this at all...i just happend to open

today and i thought that it looked kinda sad that they only need $76 bucks and all they've collected is $3!
i just wanted to post that somewhere ,where people care...and since you guys say all the time that you would support a free site in every way possible, this seemed like a good place..

if you wanna jump on me about a wrong section,a wrong topic,typos...or whatever else you wanna jump on me about....go ahead-thats not gonna ruin my day!

I'm not going to comment on where you should or should not have posted this. I shall leave that to others, but I have to say why would this person stay with a web host that charges $189 per year?  That's a ripoff.  I have my own domain (not a sims site) and free hosting from doteasy.com for $25 a year.  They also have tons of free add ons.  Unless this site has huge amounts of traffic (like Mod the Sims 2) I just don't see how the bill could be so high.

If they don't mind not having their own domain they can go to others for hosting.  I have a game site for an older game on GameSpy.  When the game was new, it was pretty popular. I never had to pay a dime.

No offense, but it sounds like this person hasn't done their homework. I could fill a page with links to free web hosts.

I think you're being a little stiff here hun.. While I do agree 189 is a bit much and they could probably have gotten something decent for around 70 or 80, the honest truth is that the hosts that are around 25 bucks in most cases aren't that great. The major one I've heard of around that price is GoDaddy, a friend of mine was with them and loved them originally but then began to get a bit leery. (it wasn't working so well)

Plus this person is a free site and is trying to do it the right way.. I would suggest rather than having a go at this person who is trying to help out a free site, if you do have a ton of really cheap hosting ideas you can share, maybe send them an email or leave a list in this thread.

And in case you're wondering I have run a site, uploaded files etc and I too spent a long time chasing webhosts so I could get a better deal.  I'm just not here under my own name.

Alien Visage, then how about you send the Sims Showroom owner an email with those links?

That might be expensive hosting, I wouldn't know, but the person is actually prepared to pay for most of it herself. I must admit I can't really get up in arms over a creator asking for 76 dollars from the community for a year's hosting. With that amount I'd be most surprised if it was a scam.

Angha, you beat me to it.

Okay, how impressive is that? Hitting the quote button when I wanted to edit. And without noticing it before posting. Somebody throw at least one cat macro at me, please!

I'm not "having a go" at carebear.  I have nothing against him/her or this site owner mentioned since I'm not a visitor at the site. And yes, they are doing the right thing with having a free site - I'm not knocking that.  Ultimately the choice of host is up the the person being hosted.

I'm simply curious as to what their host offers them for $189 that they can't get elsewhere cheaper.  Probably in my case I just don't need as many features as they might, but my point is there are loads of free or inexpensive options out there.

As for posting a list - I have already given two examples that work for me personally. If you want more, here you go.  I realize these are varying quality and space, meant to fit different people's needs, but a Google search would turn up even more options.

http://www.freespaces.com/
http://members.freewebs.com/
http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/
http://www.bravenet.com
http://www.freeweb7.com

Edited to add:  OK I used the contact form on their site and gave them the link to this thread.

By the way, if you go to http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/ I don't recommend 2ip.com as a host. Tried that and your site will be down about 99% of the time.

Relax. I posted my response to Angha Tyl before I saw yours. Message sent.

Anyways, I've said my 2¢ on this and I'm done.  If this person wants suggestions they are available, and if not then that's fine too.

$189 is a bit on the high end, but not an unreasonably out-there cost. That price is about right for maybe a double plan.

I suspect somebody needs to have a conversation with them so they can join the dots and look at how much bandwidth they actually use.. For most sites the 50-80 dollar plans are going to cover it, in spades.

And by the way Moune on some level I think it's nice that we had a "snap" moment there..

I think finding alternative sources of hosting would be best.  I'm not sure just how much bandwidth they're using, but a freehost ( http://www.freeweb7.com is pretty decent, and no ads) might work.  Or at the very least, a cheaper host.

Also, http://www.moneybetterspent.org/ has a nice list of resources under the "Go Free!" part.

Hopefully the owner(s) of SimShowroom sees this before shelling out $189 to renew their hosting.
