211  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / What's your view on 'filesharing' on the Exchange. on: 2007 July 06, 19:44:14
The Exchange is huge, a mess to navigate, and has been screwed up for years (people's creations are constantly credited to others).  I can't imagine going there to find specific pay items unless you know exactly what page(s) to go to, so I don't know why many creators are loathe to have their stuff to wind up there.  Don't worry!  We'll never find it!   Tongue

I think it's fair to give credit where it's due in the description (as it likely won't show up correctly in the parts listing anyway), so I'll do that, but I'm honestly sick of people trying to run my life in tiny, itchy ways.  You don't want your sim stuff uploaded elsewhere, then don't upload it in the first place.  Otherwise, chillax and appreciate the fact that people liked your stuff enough to use it in their games.  Be flattered, for crissakes, and stop stressing yourself out.

And yes, the Exchange went 'all your mesh are belong to us' around Pets, I think.
212  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Why do people make paysites? on: 2007 July 06, 05:50:14
They're trying to turn a buck, using programs and tutorials freely offered to the community, off of people who, thanks to EAxis utter lack of foresight or action, think it's normal to shell out cash up front for the glorious opportunity to find out that the stuff is broken,  shittily made, buggers your game or was totally misrepresented in overly cropped, staged, touched-up and lens-flared pictures designed to draw you in and rip you off.  Some of them are downright predatory verging on evil and are worse than thieves, they're con artists, extortionists, and liars.

I guess that would fall into the greed category?
213  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / The Appreciation Thread (NOT the Thanks Thread, Mind) on: 2007 July 03, 18:21:52
I'll toss out a baaa to Pescado for stompage at his leisure, but thanks to the entire crew who keep this going and, most importantly, have brought this entire assbackward paying first, crying later issue out into the light, helping out the EA customer base when EA won't, provoking rational discussion, bringing about exposure of nastiness, and generally gettin' people all edjumicated and stuff.

Hats off.   Cheesy

I used to wonder why there was a lone chair in the public restroom where I worked, but realized that there's quite a few people - the elderly, those with physical impairments or conditions, nursing mothers - who made use of it.
215  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Question on: 2007 June 27, 05:15:25
Quote from: "mando"
Paysites, on the other hand, are taking money directly out of EA's pocket in that they are creating, for sale, a product that EA itself is trying to sell. The one is worse than the other, I think.

That's the part that gets me - paysites have been picking EA's pocket for years, lol.

I guess it's cheaper than paying employees to make content.
216  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Question on: 2007 June 27, 01:18:35
Is SimPe really considered reverse engineering, tho?  I honestly don't know.  It seems more a tool that can only be used for TS2, like Homecrafter and Bodyshop.  And they aren't making money off of it or using it as is for other games or apps as far as I know.

If SimPe is reverse engineering, wouldn't mods and hacks also be?  Are they going to shut down people like Crammyboy who helped them to figure out the portal issue causing the NPC slowdown bug that shipped with the base game?  Paladin for revealing flags and such in SimCat?

Or people who make chairs for sims?  It's an interesting point raised, I just don't know how that stuff really works.
217  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Question on: 2007 June 24, 04:10:19
It would knock a leg out from under paysite owners' arguments, but it seems that listing just isn't updated at all and hasn't been for a while.  I could be wrong, I don't go to the official site too much anymore, but it was very recently that I saw those dead links.
218  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Question on: 2007 June 24, 01:13:29
The whole "EA has paysites on their fansite list so they must approve" thing is a crock.  Clicked any of those links on that list lately?  It's obviously not a maintained listing; several I tried were dead or non-functional.

I think there are worse paysites (those that charge per item, for instance), but TSR would be a nice fat target.  Spanking TSR would really say something.
219  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / O GOD O GOD!!! Some pirate wisdome please!!! on: 2007 June 21, 04:26:18
I'm guessing the tentativeness toward HolySimoly is due to the quality and craft of their free stuff, of which there is much.  Yes, technically they come in under the paysite category for those 2 'donation' packs (which I purchased literally 10 minutes before I found out about the Booty).  I rationalize - 10 bucks US for lots of stuff I always use, versus whatever Maxis stuffpacks cost, stuff I won't touch with a barge pole.

The cease and desist letter is disheartening, only because it seemed they were staying out of this whole thing.  They can't possibly not know about the Booty - but the Booty's been paid for...I'm rambling, sorry.

I found it interesting that they recently put their 50's fridges up for free after revamping for Seasons - they were formerly part of a donation pack.
220  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Peggy's new pay hair on: 2007 June 19, 22:14:47
Yeah.  We'll all be dead for a hundred years before PeggyJuice actually fixes some piece of crap they got paid for.

And there are STILL some who call filesharers thieves...!  There are STILL some who defend paysite practices...!

That pic should serve as the poster child of why paysites should die.
221  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Look at what I made and worship me! (Post Your Creations) on: 2007 June 12, 01:26:23
You have shown us your meshes!  Your meshes are wondersome!  Go forth and do meshings!  For they are of goodness!

I am quite loving the wondersome meshings of the Nouk and Berg ones as well.   Cheesy

Taking the time to thank free creators is definitely something I've been doing more of lately.  It can only help and it's a nice thing to do.  I must say that in my dreams where I can actually create free CC that people actually use, I would be fiercely hissed off at the whiff of paysite peeps pooping in my territory, and only try harder to do better and stay free.  But I'm a stubborn old woman.

Hecubus - I also dream of TSR crashing and burning, not even so much because they're a paysite, but because I hate the layout so much.
223  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Is this new, or I am just slow? (Peggy) on: 2007 June 04, 04:04:46
ARgh!  Peggy, thy name is half-assery!

That hair really bugs - I have a thing about billboardian foreheads on my sims.  A killing, hating thing.

What I was asking is if there was anything undeniably official to end this war once and for all.  Why I ask is that I have been sitting on some pay files I've fixed for my own uses and want to share but I don't want the drama that traditionally goes with it until I know EA is on my side.  (My hoped contribution to the war effort:  Outdo the paysites by improving their own stuff.)[/quote]

'Scuse me, I just 'squeed' a little.  That's a favorite dream of mine - a bunch of experienced artists in concerted effort fix a bunch of paycrap, like Peggy's poleaxed hairdos, and offer it up w/before and afters, putting the point on what kind of ripoffs so many of these pay files are...it's a greedy dream, as I couldn't mesh or even recolor my way out of a burning building.

Make them right and give them away and enjoy the show that's sure to follow.

As for the rest of your post, Moon - well said.  I also remember TS1 days and seeing paysites pop up and feeling quite disappointed about it, like something ended.  Or got terribly sick.  The mercenary will only ever be divisive in a community that only ever shares a hobby.

Bless the Booty.

I wondered if a bigger wake-up call to EA might be if paysites *were* hurting their bottom line.  What about organizing a boycott of the H&M Stuff Pack?  The Stuff Packs are closest content-wise to paysite materials, and they're obviously profitable, or the Maxians wouldn't keep churning them out.

Not that my measly 100 bucks means much to EAxis, but I've yet to buy any stuff pack ever.  I can get better, more, quality, and variety for free or for far cheaper - at HolySimoly, for example (pre-Booty).  Or, great gods, all the free true game fixes from Pescado, et al.  And, overwhelmingly in my experience, user made CC doesn't fUxxor my game as some stuffpacks are rumored to do.

EAxis is good at hurting themselves, but really - a disapproving stance on paysites is a small thing that would ultimately behoove them, if only in a 'siding w/the community at large' kind of way.
