better off purchasing a community for a game like World of Warcraft or something, one would think, since everyone pretty much knows what that game is even if they don't play it, and there's no "World of Warcraft 3" coming out that would potentially take away a lot of traffic and members of the community.

Actually, no, he wouldn't be better off buying a game for another game, especially WoW. Sims is an aberration in the game community, there is no other game out there that has a fan base that is willing to spend money on fan created content. In fact, when this phenomenon is even mentioned to most other gamers, they laugh their asses off at how fucking stupid the sims community is for letting that shit happen. I say it wouldn't work especially for a game like WoW, because as an MMO everything is run on server side, and so all mods are cosmetic or user interface related at most and don't even effect game mechanics in any large way, other than maybe where you put your buttons.

On most game sites, the only way people are able to run large fan sites is through advertisements, which are annoying but cost players nothing, or voluntary donations which generally do not get them extra content, except perhaps extra features on the site. Sound familiar? What we're basically fighting tooth and nail for is normal everywhere else in the gaming world. People aren't supposed to profit off of fan sites.

I play Neverwinter Nights 1 and all the haks for the game are hosted on Bioware's servers for free. The last update and patch for the game was released in August and featured a lot of community created content. So, yes the Sims is a different culture all together.

I know that many people tried to either contact the creators or went ahead and downloaded a lot of files before the great, wise and mighty Pescado has been trying to copy the site. I'm not sure who has what as many tried to help and they are listed in the earlier pages of this thread. I'm just going to wait until Pescado says "You all can jump back in the pool (boiling sharks permitting)" before going to rubberneck at the site. Like many have said, it is so tempting to go look.

I think I'll go make some cookies.... *looks for the rum to make rum cookies*

I object. That wasn't part of the deal.
All who question the word of the Emperor shall be tied naked to steel scaffolding and beaten with cement-filled milk jugs.

No vat of boiling sharks?

This whole page just made my eyes bleed.

But seriously, I play Neverwinter Nights 1 (persistent world) when not simming and they have a pure black and white to recolor the clothes in the game. My husband, who is a graphics artist, hates it when people use those colors in game. It looks so grade school in the Sims. It almost screams "I'm 12".

And the pajamas... wtf?Huh

And that purple thing... "perfect for that pastel hooker look."

*goes back to lurking*

The seated creature appears to have been HOWITZER'd into place.

Much to the surprise of the elusive skunkus blinkii moniesgetticus, observed flitting about in its Maxis-made habitat.  Amazing and astounding!

That is so true! The "wings/feathers/whatever" look like a water spray behind her where she landed after being shot from a howitzer. That is a very good description.

I've read threads here off and on before I joined recently. I read all the newer threads before really posting an answer and everyone here is treated with respect even when they do not agree on something. But it is handled like adults, not like children on a playground. And people know how to write, not something that is shorthand for texting people on PDA's or phones. I understand not all the members here are fluent in English as they are from other countries and English is not their first language. That is different.

Reading is your friend. The FAQ is your friend. Lurking is your friend. If you need to ask a question, there is a thread specifically for that.

What does 'Tim' think he is doing? Is he trying to tame a dangerous animal and make it a house pet? People like 'Annette' are dangerous. They can be all cute and cuddly one minute and then a predator the next. Look at Sigfreid and Roy. They played with wild animals and got bit. I am glad he is recovering, but still... And 'Tim' is only bating the tiger to attack again. And this time it's going to bite him and his. I hope 'Annie' does know what is going on. 'Annette' needs a life. A real one.

Not sure about Swedish law, but do they have restraining orders?

These were on the front page of TSR this morning. *shakes head*

Even when I was a teen, I wouldn't have worn anything like that.

This is true too - since getting active in computer game communities and MMOs, I'm making plenty of female friends....now to figure out how to hit a game store with you folks.....and now to relisten to Sweeney Todd and do some work on my sweater.....

*grin*

Sweeney Todd! You Rock! I was lucky enough to see the original Broadway cast in 1980 with Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou. They were fantastic! The movie was good, but what I miss was all the extras singing and joining in the banter. And they really pulled the punch on the end of the movie. The stage show has a much better ending.  Smiley Which version are you listening to?

And yes, I know many female gamers that play Table top games (D&D and all sorts of other RPing games), video games and online RP's.

Sorry derailed the thread....

But seriously, I wish we could do something about TSR and the whole sharing thing. *sighs* I will go back to lurking....

I'm unlurking to share my identity theft story. Our local high school had its student db hacked a couple years ago & someone stole all my daughter's personal information. This person used her name to open utilities (gas, water, heat, ect. in 5 different cities), cell phone accounts (4), credit cards(10), bank accounts (which had $5000 + in post dated checks) ect. Since she was a minor, no one was monitoring her credit report & she definitely wasn't opening credit cards, so there was no clue this was going on. It all blew up when she tried to get a college loan.

I will say that Visa/Mastercard/Discover have been very helpful in clearing up the accounts opened in her name. It's the collection agencies for all the utilities/bank accounts that have made life hell. I've been fighting with them for almost 8 months with no resolution and my daughter's credit rating is about as bad as it can get. The people that did the hacking didn't just run up credit card debts, they really did take on the identities of the people whose personal information they were able to steal. It's been a living nightmare for my daughter.

So on that note, I hope TSR goes straight down for sharing personal information. It's a very selfish, very childish, very dangerous way to get "revenge".

I've also heard of dishonest parents stealing their children's identities to do the same thing.  Angry I'm saying you are one, but anyone who would do that to their own child....

I hope TSR rots for what they have done.

I had the state government where I live try to hold up my state income tax refund because of THEIR error. They mistyped in my SSN for someone else's in their datebase and said I owed taxes to a county I've never lived in. Fortunately a phone call straightened it out and the state admitted their error, but still that is pretty scary. And too, I  have a very unique (in the US anyway) maiden name. But the internet was not really around when I got married so anything I've done is probably all under my legal name.

And yes, it is good to have  your credit monitored in the US, I had something happen (data was "misplaced") and I have a free year of credit monitoring paid for by the company. I get an email once a month that tells me if anything has changed on my credit report. Thankfully nothing has.

I now have to go back and read this from the beginning, but the pictures so far are priceless! I'm laughing myself silly here.
