31  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / So it begins... Or something slightly less dramatic on: 2007 February 14, 20:59:46
Hmmm...   :?

This has got to be one of the more confusing threads for me. Maybe i'm being a bit simplistic here.... but hasn't it been established that EA actually owns the .package files. They made it quite clear with Pets Bodyshop that they wanted all .package files necessary for the downloader to be included...

EA must be laughing all the way to the bank... If they actually had to host all the CC that's been created since TS2 came out,  it would have severely cut into their profits....

I can understand creators who don't want other people to take credit for their creations... it's happened to me a few times in life... I've done the work but someone else takes the credit, and it's not a nice feeling...

However... how can there be any TOS's or restrictions placed on something that isn't owned by the creator....  Kind of like me offering to sell you a house I don't own or allow you to use a car i don't own

Like i said, maybe a bit simplistic, but unless/until EA changes it's policy about ownership of the .package files this debate is rather pointless.... EA could gather up all the CC tomorrow and put it behind a pay wall and there is absolutely nothing the creators or paysite operators could do about it....

Just my 2 cents

I think a few people need to pull out the dictionary and look up a few words...

Opinions are a statement of beliefs NOT a statement of facts...

Methinks the paysite owners are starting to get a little desperate...

     Tongue

Isn't this like crack dealers trying to come to some sort of compromise with the courts???

My 17 yr old cat is Scratch and i call him scratchers, scratchman, old man, farty old man, pooh head, death breath, monster, cranky old fart, etc.... funny thing is he answers to most of them. I've got another 8 yr old cat named sparky, but i call him spark about 90% of the time and little boy.... ok.. now i'm lost, what was the topic again??

I think it's funny the way topics get so derailed here and at MATY.... better than the comedy channel
36  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / 2 Interesting Articles on: 2006 November 17, 01:11:59
I was reading one of my favorite online magazines today and saw 2 articles that have a lot to do with the discussions, in the Sims community, about a content creators right to make money and to restrict the use of content.

The first article pokes a lot of holes into the arguement some of the creators use "I have a right to make money from my creations" and "I can't make money if i give my creations away for free"

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20061115/020157.shtml  (The economics of abundance is not a moral issue)

Follow some of the links in the article and it talks about the false assumption that content can be "stolen".

The second article is about copyrights and the creators idea that "they can set the terms of copyright"

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20061115/013623.shtml (Attention Publishers: Copyright Law Isn't Something Flexible Where You Get To Set The Rules)

It points to an instance where a content creator tries to go beyond the law in terms of fair use and ownership.

Both of the articles i think have a lot to do with the debate in the community now, about creators rights and ownership of digital content....

Everybody, consumers and creators, should read the articles.... made me think.

I'm not a Sims2 creator. I've created nothing and don't plan on creating anything. I play the game, that's it.

In defense of creators though, something i've learned in life.....

If you are going to hold me responsible for my mistakes, then you are going to hold me responsible for my sucesses...

So, if i was going to create something for sims2, i would like to get the recognition and appreciation for my creation, not for being a creator.

One reason MTS bugs me..." {insert empty platitudes here} ,downloading", but very few of those people come back after downloading and give an honest opinion or critique, and, in some threads, the few that do are dismissed. So, if i was a creator, i'd definately post somewhere that people were honest, like, um, i don't know, somewhere like, um, MATY maybe...

nuff said, off to the store
