271  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Just a thought. It might be stupid. on: 2007 July 03, 02:01:15

Chemistrycoutrney, you had asked about Helaene earlier. Helaene's site was what I would consider a "gray area site". Almost all of her things were free except for a couple of donation items, and as far as I know (others may know otherwise), she didn't tend to get overly pissy about it if you shared it, as long as you didn't send it to everyone in cyberspace. The prices weren't bad, at least not in US dollars .... it was $2 for a complete Sim.

A few here wouldn't really consider her old site a paysite. But technically, it was, so it was included in the list of paysites. It's a moot point anyway, now, I guess.

oh, ok.  I was real confused by that, especially since at her new forum she has a direct link to the anti-paysite petition, so that ea can see in a different way how a lot of their fans really do detest such things.  since she's stated that she's very much against paysites, i was surprised to see her in the list of "vanquished foes" if you will.

OK really did not want to get into this, because all the OP was doing is asking for advice on sharing.

That's true.  I was just seeing if anyone had an opinion on the best ways to say Hey, I know where you can get that, in the spirit of sharing and community, and maybe you have something you'd like to share too.  Without starting a sharing is just code for stealing argument places.  I figure starting an argument (accidental as it may be)  about sharing v. stealing, who's right, who's wrong, etc, is probably not the best way to let people know that sharesites are actually a good thing. And no one stole it, it's been purchased to be shared, etc.  As now, I'm having troubles figuring a way to properly word this so that i doesn't sound like I'm asking for people to confront a hidden issue.

Another poster a little further up, the one that gave me permission to blast about news of PMBD (sorry, i've forgotten your sn   )  I just wanted to say that I have no concern about being banned from a site for saying what I think.  If I get banned from a place for speaking my mind, while keeping it respectful of my fellow human beings, then it's not a site I want to be at anyways.

Everyone has their own take on paysites vs. freesites, and what the line is for acceptable, and how far is too far to argue your point.  And anyone that has an opinion on this has a very strong opinion, which I guess is why it can so quickly disintegrate to arguing.  This is what I'm trying to avoid, see?  Not so much here, since all of you already know about things like the booty, but other places.  You know?

my main issue with her stuff, beyond the obvious charging people, is that i downloaded some free hairs a bit ago.  I thought I'd downloaded 3 hairs.  I was trying to figure out which hair mesh i needed for a recolor from MTS2.  I narrowed it down to 3 very similar ones.  I did that download, and then the download from MTS2.  I went to my game, and discovered that I did not have a black brown red blonde custom in three styles.  I had like 20 blacks browns reds blondes customs in three styles.  and none of them were the mesh for the one i wanted from MTS2.  GARR!!!  and, in addition to that, I like one in game from the 100 hairs that are now there.  I cannot figure out which one it is in my freaking folder.
It's a folder with just those downloads in it, but since it's literally 100, I'm just going to delete them all and then figure out if I have any bald sims.

**edit: i just noticed that i did not clarify, it turned out the mesh i needed to make the MTS2 recolor work was a donation mesh.  i could probably get it out of the booty, but I don't care anymore.**

That's wonderful news. I'm glad she's getting it all sorted out. I'd been wondering if everything was working out for her but being busy I haven't had a chance to check up on her. Thanks for the update. Cheesy

no problem.  i was surprised that i got such a prompt response back in my email box.  (i'd just sent the email the day before.)  With as busy as they've all been trying to sort out the mess with their sites, I more figured they could read my email for morale boosts and a nice thinking of you quality, but since I got the reply, I figured everyone would want to know the general progress.   Smiley   I'll be glad for all of those sites when it gets back up and running again.  I'm sure they will be as well.

It's called Sims File Vault.

see, up until about 2 days ago, I'd never heard of such places as simsfilevault.  When I offered to purchase a "donation" set for to be added to the booty, was the first time.  I knew I could buy it, I knew you all could have it, but I didn't know the inbetween.  Computer or Web (or a little bit of both) Illiteracy is a terrible thing.  I just know that I'm not the only one that is/was clueless about these sorts of things.

So If this is pure idiocy on my part, I'd say sharkbait away, and I'll not make this kid of posting mistake again.  *promise promise*

I was watching TV the other night, and I saw a comic talking about piracy in relation to burning movie DVD's instead of buying them. How at the beginning of movies, it has the anti-piracy ad that says you wouldn't steal a car.
His response was no.  I wouldn't steal a car, but if a friend of his called and said, Hey, I just bought a car, would you like me to burn you a copy, he would most likely say yes to that.  And everyone in the audience completely lost their minds with clapping and giggles.

Which made me wonder, if there was some way to post outside of here, (at some site like thesims2.com) and say I have that hair/shirt/bed, etc.  that you like but haven't paid for, would you like a copy of it?  I'm sure that a lot of people wouldn't go hey that's stealing, but say, hey, thanks for sharing with me.
I've seen a lot of people at sites say things like:  I saw this hair on a model in a story, and someone else say, "Yeah, that's *insert paysite here* hair, and you have to buy it." and the original poster say, oh.  Sad  ok.  Sad   and that's that.  If i could then say, oh, but if you really want it, I'll give it to you, with a link to it in the booty, I think people would maybe say thank you instead of BLARG OMG!!! tHat's STEALING!!!  and if they said thank you, maybe they would tell a friend, etc.

Does what I'm saying make sense to anyone?  Is it a full thought only inside my mind?

on a tiny sidenote, anyone else know about Helaene's forum she made called house of Helaene?  She posts up new creations there for people to freely download, such as eyebrows and things.  I never even knew she was a paysite.  How long ago was that (Courtney asks, confusedly, and obviously out of the loop.)?
277  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Jessica purchased a server. on: 2007 July 01, 14:29:14
I decided to email her to find out if there was anything i could do to help, and if there was a donation drive, i'd be happy to donate to it, etc.  this was my reply back.

"Hi
Thank you for your email.
We were having alot of problems (attacks, host refusing to investigate, cpu usage hit the max allowed, etc) and decided to purchase a server.
I just bought the server yesterday and it will take about 3 days before it will be ready for me. Then we will be going through the moving process. So it will still be a little bit longer before my site, and all the other hosted sites will be back online.
All the content has been backed up so nothing will be lost in the process Smiley
Thank you for your support and kindness, I am hoping all will go back to normal soon.

But WHAT THE FUCK is a cafe table and chairs doing in a BATHROOM???

Heh heh heh.  You know at least some of the sims would end up eating dinner in there.  They'd hike all the way across their house and up stairs to stand next to the door stomping their feet with exes over someone's face cause they can't eat their mac and cheese in the bathroom bistro.
279  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / my two cents on the TSR debacle. on: 2007 June 29, 23:57:02
So, I have decided that now is a good time for me to chuck in my two cents about The Sims Resource.  I have registered myself at the sims resource.  Apparently in October of 2006, I signed up for the Sims Resource.  For the challenge lots.  I can't remember where I got that recommendation.  I remember downloading the challenge lots now, and playing that "Skip Roper" guy all the way through.  I remember starting a few of the other challenges, and then getting increasingly frustrated when the freaking counter thingee wouldn't read that I'd completed that stupid aspect of the challenge.  I've theoretically said "thank you" for an outfit as early as March of 2007.  Can't recall what the heck I've said thank you for.  Perusing my history of downloads, I have downloaded 49 things from TSR in the time that I've been a member.  Out of those 49 things, 2 of them are still in my game.  Out of the 2, one of them is being used, but I'm displeased by it.  I downloaded that henley tube sock sleepwear outfit thingee, that I saw in a story on the sims2 exchange.  Once In my game I realized that it wasn't actually very good.  The reason it looked pretty good in the story was the person's graphics card wasn't all that good.  I've also noted that I have 200 something "Kudos" so only a bajillion more and I'll get something good!

Basically, I haven't had any reason to think ill of the stuff at TSR, i didn't think.  I now realize, that I've secretly harbored feelings of animosity towards the site since 2006, when I first discovered it.  Yeah, that place is pretty much worthless.  And that's my 2 cents worth.
