The issue I have with the treasure chest forum (and hence linking of PMBD in sigs) is that it basically advocates filesharing in that it's a list of "stolen" things, and also asks for money to help with the endeavour. You say that paysite links should be banned from MTS2... I say stop trying to dictate what goes on there - notwithstanding the point that has been made time and time again that a site that has a great sharing policy you would still class as a paysite (SimChic) or actually is mostly free with only a few sets etc (AroundTheSims). Or perhaps I should just turn into a forum nazi and just ban all sigs and all links altogether to anything remotely resembling any kind of site. Frankly I'm getting tired of the extremist attitudes of people here. I dont tell you what to do, but you seem to think you have some right to tell me what I should do? *shrugs* I almost preferred it when you all hated me.  But you have to understand, you are giving preference to paysite owners over filesharers, leading the official MTS2 stance to be: Free > pay > fileshare, rather than just free > pay, and THAT is what we're all objecting to. It's like, you can rant and rave about how awesome paysites are without a problem, but mention filesharing and you'll be deleted. How is that more moral than TSR? |

I think Delphy's point is that, as leader of a giant organization, his hands are tied- he can't afford to alienate any significant portion of the community by advocating something like filesharing just like a secular leader can't afford to alienate a good chunk of his or her citizens by advocating a particular religion above another. He has to play nice so that we can be naughty and people can pick and choose, or be part of both.

Myspace broke my computer, literally. It crashed my firefox 100% of the time attempting to sign up, so I decided,it's for sheep anyway.
I have a facebook because I want to be able to send messages to people on campus whose emails I don't know.
I have an LJ because I have a lot of friends on the interweb and keep missing them being online; whenever I have news about my life I post to my (friends-only) journal so everyone can be up to date. Saves money on phone calls.

The thing about wiki is it tends to correct itself in the long run- you get 3 or 4 jackasses making an article, it'll be full of lies and propaganda, but by the time you have 30 or 40 edit warring back and forth, generally the article ends up being someplace inbetween.
But it's hard to tell how long an article's been there or how accurate it is on first glance.

When I first heard about it I thought it was awful, how could people STEAL from the nice paysite owners like Lyriclee!?
Then I realized Lyric, who had told me about it, was a fucktard.
Then I found out nobody's hacking any servers or anything, and on top of that, it's illegal to begin with.
Suddenly, I was anti-paysite.

Echoing on the issue of Fair Use, that you can, but you better be ready to pull it down as soon as they complain.
Adding:
Sometimes people put up content and think it's Fair Use because their site is free...but they have banner ads. Or a bandwidth tip-jar.
Any lawyer worth their salt will point this up as making money off the file. People came to the site to download, ergo their copyright is being illegally sold via the pageviews.
They could also claim that you're hurting their negotiation possibilities as a sponsored object in the game (Alienware computer, etc.)
After all, why should they pay/get paid to put their content in the game if the community downloads the same for free.
And if they did sue after you ignored their C&D, they don't have to win- they just have to make your life hell, and it'll serve as a warning to others.
Look how well it's worked for Disney, that people speak of their legal department in fear and awe. so have them put it here. Ad-free! |

I got banned from a chat room for calling a mod a nazi once... the mods were telling racist jokes aimed at me when I mentioned I was half black, and they called me hitler for objecting (  :shock:), but since one of them happened to be German, I got banned for "harassing the mods". I keep remembering that when I read threads like that one. |

In short, we see things from the moral perspective of traditional gamers, and we think you can take your faffy artiste morals and shove 'em. If she really had faffy artiste morals, she'd be up in arms about creators taking textures and models from copyrighted works and leading downloaders to assume that they, the creators, made them - and anyone who so much as was inspired by a copyrighted work, ever.  I don't know that she has morals so much as a really, really strong desire to feel like she's better than someone.
