61  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / TSR IS A SUCK-ASS SUCKY WEBSITE on: 2007 December 13, 00:17:09
It has, probably a million pages ago in this same thread.

No one knows for sure, except the FAs. Each FA makes different amounts, depending on how well they played "lets make a deal" with Thomass, and apparently they don't even know how much the other FAs make.

Some reportedly make in the hundreds of dollars a month, if I'm not mistaken Thomass offered Nouk something like $500 a month to go to TSR.

If you don't have a place in mind for uploading, Garden of Shadows is a good place to post gothy custom content and recolours.

/shameless plug

Also, we're really nice.
Mostly.

Just about all of my sims live in glorious squalor. I love cluttery, decrepit, junky houses full of trash. It's just lovely!

So... Paden looks like the Fourth Doctor and thinks like a Dalek?

Whoops. Sorry, thats what I get for mentioning Sarah Jane. However, since this thread is already derailed...

I think people who have only seen the new Doctor Who are a little surprised when they realize that the Doctor hasn't always been young and relatively good looking. Up till Five, he was always a bit older (though Four was not as old), and more of a fatherly or grandfatherly figure rather than "cute". Four was awesome and fun, but Five was probably the first Doctor anyone really ever did the fangirl thing for. Six wasn't my cup of tea, and Seven was back to the older Doctor. Eight was pretty, but the movie was pretty awful. Don't get me wrong, I adore Tennant as the Doctor, but it isn't because he's cute or adorably geeky (those are perks, but really I like him because he's like the best bits of Four and Five, and I love them). I think basing who is the best Doctor on looks is kind of, for lack of a better word, silly.

Silly Tgriffy, I know kilts are for men. But go google kilted skirts, they are much like kilts, but for women Tongue

Nature girl, she's quite pretty, but I agree on the face thing. It is rather small, and it makes her neck look very long.
67  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / a FREE site needs help! on: 2007 November 17, 22:40:07
Quality free hosting is drying up, unfortunately. Most of them put ads all over your site or severely limit your bandwidth. Several smaller sites I've seen have been using Moonfruit or other free hosts, then linking to files hosted on Mediafire, or use blogging sites and do the same thing. Now the problem is that Mediafire is problematic in that it doesn't guarantee that it will keep your files. Files have been known to get dumped, and in the case of filesharing they certainly delete just about everything if anyone complains about it.

So yes, it is still possible to run free sites. However, even going with some of the cheapest packages of paid hosting gives you a lot of security. And for all the stuff people say about GoDaddy, you can get a decent package for $3 or $4 a month, and it's normally quite reliable (unless you do something dumb like me and unknowingly used an expired license for a program Tongue).

It's my opinion that whatever host a free site wants to use is up to them. I don't think her choice is our business at all, except for the matter of how much people are willing to donate to help them. I would hope if that site can't get enough donations, they'll look around to see if they can get one cheaper, but that is all on them.

Wait, what?

If I can't take potshots at the best pirates, then this community officially sucks.

Wait, is this spam? Am I spamming? Okay, I guess I'll make up for it.

Stuff I made and is not released:

I dunno, I guess they're okay. Not totally spiffy, and the boots and belt weren't altered too much from Gelydh's. I'm feeling kind of bleh about my creations lately.

No, no. The new Rose hair is the Sarah Jane Smiley
70  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Coco Sims Closing! Another paysite Destroyed! on: 2007 September 07, 02:58:11
I dunno, I must be a freak in this community. I don't celebrate when a site closes down entirely, I celebrate when a site goes from pay to entirely free or decides to just upload everything to MTS2. I don't like driving creators to stop completely, I just want them to stop charging.

I don't know this girl personally and have never had any dealings with her, but from what I've heard of her dealings with others in business matters (ie, money) she kind of sucked. Those aren't the only complaints I've heard about not receiving anything for money paid. This is why, at the very least, paysite owners should be held accountable for quality and service to their customers.

Also, if you've ever had a recurring agreement with anyone using paypal, you should be able to terminate it at any time by deleting the agreement in your account. Then you can file a dispute over items not received.

Well pooh. I've always liked Yakov quite a bit, even when our opinions differed. He's very talented and willing to help and advise others when they need it. I'm not going to lie and say I'm not disappointed that he's going over to TSR, but I'm not going to badmouth people I have respect for either.  As far as I'm concerned, I hope he's happy with his choices, but I also hope that he won't get upset when his pay items end up here.

Brit slang is fun, but Halloween is better, so nah.

Last Halloween, my entire family decided to have some fun. We transformed the front porch of our house into an enclosed mad-doctor's operating room. We bought scrubs from thrift stores, and I made myself a little nurses outfit and hat, and a bunch of surgical masks, and then covered everything in fake blood. My youngest brother sat with his head through a hole in the table, and in the dark with smoke machines and a black light, he totally looked fake. Then my mother's husband (who is 50, btw) totally overdid his performance as the mad doctor, screaming and cackling while we ushered kids through the door 'the doctor will see you now'. The fake head thing scared more than a few adults and teens, and he went easier on the little ones, but everyone had a great time. We must have had a couple hundred trick or treaters, we went through more than forty pounds of bulk candy.

I'm 26, and I'm never giving up Halloween. It's a family tradition.

I think it's hilarious, they think they're being clever and making us look bad, but the truth is that at the moment pirates are very glamorized in the media (POTC, anyone?). They are also drawing attention to us, and really, can we argue with free advertising? How appropriate it is as well, we get some shiny (and some rather shitty, but I don't want that) pirate swag for our games (which we will also put in the booty).

Is TSR secretly on our side? Thats the only way this whole thing makes any sense to me.
74  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Numenor's Opinion of pay vs free on: 2007 August 25, 19:27:37
Five? Mine takes at least half a goddamned hour to load, and that's down from the 45 it used to take before I deleted some shit.
75  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Numenor's Opinion of pay vs free on: 2007 August 22, 07:19:24
While there are certain points I do agree with in his rambling essay, I was left with a feeling of disgust more than anything. The polls were so hopelessly skewed that there was no way of expressing any sort of opinion other than stark black or white.

I think it is a pity that free creators can't really send out a gift in return for a genuine donation anymore. I'm not talking about a sale, just a little something to say thank you for shelling out some cash, even if it is a file share friendly item. Technically, money has exchanged hands and it's not really kosher. However, I can't blame pirates for that, just the people who have bastardized the words 'donation' and 'gift' to such a horrid degree.

I also agree that sites like TSR and Peggy are far better targets than sites that have a few reasonably priced pay items. For example, I myself used to regularly buy files from Sussi, not because I couldn't get them elsewhere, but because I wanted to support her. However, that does not mean that those sites are not still pay sites, and we'd much rather see them be entirely free.

'Destroy' is the most misconstrued term in the anti-pirate rhetoric I've been reading, because most of the people here do not in fact wish to outright destroy most sites , just destroy the pay section. As much as that is accomplished through use of the booty, we also try to offer alternatives. Whats wrong with that?

And lastly, how many free creators have honestly packed their bags over what we stand for? Many of the people who are pirates are also free creators, and time and time again I've seen people here try to uphold reasonable creator's rights. Unfortunately, the fight for creator's rights has caused Numenor to forget that at the other end, there are also consumer's rights. Not to go off on a tangent, but even if it is a creator's right to sell his or her work, then isn't it also the consumer's right to have a guarantee of quality? I don't think I'd have such a distaste for paysites if most of the objects purchased from them weren't shoddy, hastily slapped together, and very flawed, with no recompense for the consumer when they realize they've been conned.

So I will close out this somewhat incoherent discourse by saying that I was much more sympathetic to Numenor's distress before I read his rant. If the value of the object in question is inherently tied to it's rareness, then it doesn't say much for the quality of the item in the first place. Since I know Numenor's work, I'd say that sounds like rubbish to me. Also, are the people to whom the item was given the type of people who are only happy with their toys if no one else has them? That's rather petty too. Maybe I have a kindergarten mentality, but I'd much rather share the finer things than hoard them all for myself.

And finally, a suggestion for getting the item removed from the booty, should Numenor actually read any of this crap; reserve the item as a special file, but leave out the 'this is what you get when you donate' bit. Instead, if people donate, then send it to them as a surprise thank you. It accomplishes the same thing, but without the carrot which makes it technically a pay file.
