Title: Your personal Anti-Paysite activism?
Post by: pennynne on 2007 May 31, 21:24:01
Well, I just thought I could start a thread of your own Anti-Paysite actions. I mean, what have you done to destroy the paysites or make the change possible?

I haven't done much yet. I'm pretty new to this idea anyway (an idea to destroy the paysites, even though I've always hated them in secret).

-I've never subscribed to paysite during these 7 years of simming
-I've always shared my own custom content for free (just to make everyone enjoy something I have made and liked, not for making money of my CC)
-I've signed the Anti-Paysite petition
-I've promoted the petition on a big Finnish Sims forum :) (I translated the petition in Finnish, not literally but anyway)

What have you done?   I'm curious.

In all the time I've been playing, I've only subscribed on two different occasions for wds, when I first got the game. Since then I haven't subscribed anything - mostly because of the prices , and obviously because I could get nice stuff for free. And I've only got more and more picky of the stuff I put in my game. :) The few things I've made, I've either put on the exchange or some other free site. nowadays I try to support free creators as much as possible. I am continually planning on learning some advanced creating stuff, like meshing. Well, I am trying. I plunder the booty. I gladly give people rum when I have it. I stick people.

Edit: oh, and I did sign the petition, I forgot I had

Besides signing the petition, joining the phorum and plundering the booty, I guess that only things I've done to support our piracy is not ever pay money for stuff, not design sites for them when they've asked, and put my creations up at MTS2 where I know they'll be free.

Oh, and occasionally stab the ever-living crap out of my Paysite Owner voodoo doll occasionally.  Hee!

I definetly signed Nouk's petition.
I wrote to EA (Hecubus' Free The Sims: Letter Writing Campaign)
I share pay content. :D
And a few other things. :D

I subscribed to Peggy once before I knew of the booty. Once in game, I immediately knew she wasn't worth the money. LOL

I haven't gotten a subscription since the Sims 1.

Oh - more details....
I signed petition.
I upload to MTS2 and soon to Insim too.

I have never purchased custom content.
I download free content from free sites and donate to them if I love their stuff.
I post my own items on MTS2 and my own site, The Sims2 Noir.
Helped get the FFFSS started.
Started the Free Sims 2 Simming wiki
Wrote letter to EA and shared it
Got banned off the UK EA official site for mentioning PMBD
Got reprimanded for starting shit on the official US EA site
Will share anything I have with anyone.

Well, I signed that petition too. :D
I also have uploaded one thing each to MTS2 and InSim. ^^;;...The reasons why I ran to InSim really don't have anything to do with anything here though...
I also nag my friends [who play TS2] to come to the booty and plunder. heh.

I have a 100% free site
I dont subscribe or donate to paysites
I sent 2 emails to EA and one regular mail letter as part of hecubus's campaign.
I donated money to blue soup for the booty
I signed the petition
I advertise nouks EA email page on my front page, and also the petition addy.
I emailed everyone I knew urging them not to donate to illegal paysites (got a good responce from that!)
I bought the domain thesimsresource.info and linked it to the booty  :P
I have just started a creators choice page, with captain berg, which is a listing of free sites that allow redistrobution of thier meshes

I wish I could do more, I'm willing to help in anyway I can

I was going to add to the booty but my video card had to be replaced and I maxed out my credit card with that and some memory. (for Seasons)Now my computer is having major issues after reinstalling xp and losing absolutely everything I had. I suspect my hard drive is going bad.
I did sign the petition and got other people to sign.
My printer isn't working so I will print the letter when I go to my friends house.

I donate to free sites whenever I can.
I try to give help when I can to whoever support this cause (free sites).
I post my (non-awesome™) mods on MTS2 and MATY with a "do-whatever-you-want" policy.
I generally try to have my actions and overall behavior coherent with my beliefs.

Not a whole lot. I plunder the booty anytime I see someone worth having in my game. So that's a grand total of twice.
I also refuse to subscribe to pay sites, have done ever since I got the game and never will, all through a combination of principals, hatred of paysites, being unable to afford paying for game content and being able to get it for free anyway.

Spreading the word about the booty, mostly. And arguing with paysite owners, though, that I do for shits and giggles. Nothing makes you happier than arguing with stupid people that refuse to acknowledge the fact that they're wrong. <3

Title: Your personal Anti-Paysite activism?
Post by: Minolia on 2007 June 01, 09:59:41
I've signed the petition and written to EA. I only upload to MTS2 and currently make sure I don't use and advertise pay items in the pictures I use for my uploads. The only point of my ToU is that nothing I made gets uploaded on paysites of any description. Oh and I regularly plunder the booty and have pointed a few innocents in it's direction.

Title: Your personal Anti-Paysite activism?
Post by: Jojoba on 2007 June 01, 11:25:07
I signed the petitition
I spread word of the petition around
I spread word of the Free the Sims2 writing campaign around
I helped Hecubus, and all the AA private area members, to collect information on the paysites after we heard from EA, and that has all been sent off
I share pay files
I give out the booty link regularly
I only upload to free sites
I encourage creators at TSR to leave
I laugh at paysites and drink rum. ARR!!!

-i've donated to insim and mts2 (i am sure my money went in to buy some teenage girl a web cam, lol)
-i've shared pay files to ALL my sim friends before i discovered the booty
-posted snide and nasty messages on pay sites forum, just discrete enough not to get my ass banned so i continue my "hobby"
-gotten called out by "sim masters" and "maxoids" for mentioning the booty
-wrote a letter to EA
-did not sign the petition because i ACTUALLY agreed with pescado on that
-put a link to the booty in my siggy on my other sites that i frequent, i do it under weird names that way no one can tell it's to the booty, so the occasional curious cat gets linked here
-put a bog ol' pirate lovin link in my siggy at sims 2 community since were are "cool" with them

btw- hecubus, please PM me with a site that is not covered yet, i would like to donate while i have a little extra money

- Posted here: http://www.forums.boolprop.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14190&start=0

- Never had a subscription from a pay site and never will

I'm sorry to say I haven't done much either.  The only things I've done so far are:

1.  Hold "booty parties" - there were some classmates who wanted stuff from paysites a couple of months ago (but whose parents are against file-sharing), so I invited them over to our house, gave them each a blank CD-R and directed them to the booty (where they downloaded to their hearts' content).  Needless to say, they no longer have any interest in buying subscriptions or "donating" to panhandling (pay) sites.

2.  Emailed my family and friends with links to the booty and to the front page of PMBD so that they could read Pescado's message.

3.  Signed Nouk's petition.

4.  Wrote a letter to EA for Hecubus' campaign.

5.  PM'ed some people at a couple of forums, giving out the links to PMBD and the booty.

6.  Try to write encouraging messages in the guestbooks of free sites, and  I press the "thanks" button religiously at MTS2.

7.  Directed people to Nouk's site (so that they could read what EA had said and to download good, free hair) and to her screenie that verified that  EA did indeed respond to her.

I would really like to do much more to help the cause, and when our financial situation improves, I'd like to buy a couple of subscriptions so that I can download the stuff and pass them to whoever would put them in the booty.

Let's see...

I have, during Sims 1 and Sims 2, paid for one thing, the donation set from 11dots. Was it worth it? Probably not. Why? There was no donation button and I did like the stuff. I think that was less than three bucks US, though.

Have donated to free sites from time to time.

Plundered the booty.

Pointed others to the booty.

Advertised the booty elsewhere.

Put links to the booty wherever I thought to do it (ex.: LiveJournal Interests)

Discussed community brouhahas in various locations

Discussed EA, EA's EULA, paysite v freesite wars, etc. with people who are actually active in the gaming industry, including grad students & professors in the game design major (which isn't my major)

Occasional letter writing during my non-existent spare time

Daily pop-ins to PMBD and MATY, occasional pop-ins to grah and elsewhere

Shared booty links & pay .package files with students I otherwise don't know, and with professors who play or who have kids who play the game

Signed petitions

Copypasta'd petition and/or links elsewhere, with credit given to originators / hosts

Patiently pointed out known legal guidelines and why paysites are, in essence, stealing intellectual property to make a quick buck

Pirate avvies elsewhere

Have shared what little I have created for free (britpoptarts.4shared.com)

Have spoken up in defense of freesite owners, even if the subject was not specifically related to the free v. pay squabbling (most recently, fussed about how downloaders need to chill on the demands and bitching WRT freebies)

Do not strip out pay content when sharing, on purpose

Post screenies with pay content, and make sure to tell the curious how to get it

When helping others with game issues to the best of my limited ability, always mention download organization tools and MATY / PMBD

Shun sites that require buttlicking and/or censor references to paysites: I have no patience for egotism or censorship. It's a farking game, get over yourselves.

Have other interests outside of the Sims 2, thus am not seen as a one-dimensional crank in need of a life

I also occasionally actually play the game.

1. Every single night, I check a new site on the booty list. I download what I want from the booty, then I go onto the site and download their "free" items I like, to use their bandwidth.

2. Every time TSR promotes a new FA, I leave a PM for everyone who congratulates them mentioning PMBD. How I haven't been banned yet is beyond me.

3. I will write a letter based on the form one, but I want to put my own spin on it.

Hey, Sherrie!  I was just over at your site lookin' through your stuff (which is nice, by the way!) and I was surprised to see your update about sending donations to charities instead of to you guys.  I have to say that I'm so happy and so proud of you!  It's beyond awesome to see that and you deserve some recognition for that!

I haven't done anything unusual.  I've directed a few people to the booty and done my own share of plundering.  I've signed the petition and sent my letter.  I talked a couple other people into sending letters too.  Now that it won't get me banned, I've got piratical links in my sigs at MTS2/S2C.  When I feel the need, I'll send a little love to free creators, including hitting the Thanks button on MTS2, signing guestbooks or sending emails, etc.  I've never paid for CC and have sworn to never do so unless it is to help round out the booty.

I look at the guestbooks on paysites, and everytime someone wishes for a pay item to be free, I email them. Of course, for that to work, they need to leave an email address for me to use. But a lot of them do.

I wonder if I should make a new email address (PMBD@gmail.com, or something like that) so that the people I email will pay more attention to the emails I send them. So far nobody has emailed me back.  :(

I had a minor brainwave today; I use www.bugmenot.com a lot to get a quick login to sites that force you to register to gain access (it may be free, but it's the principle, blast it) and I had a little thought that maybe other people who, not wanting to pay for Sims junk, might go looking for a sneaky back-door in on the off-chance one of the logins worked  Of course none of them do, so I'm putting a little nudge in this direction in the entries of out favourite paysites. The text boxes don't allow enough text to input the URL, this little phrase was the best I could do. :)

Not much, but I hope it's better than nothing.

1. I've sent money to two paysites and the Sims2 Enhancer. Have posted my situation with S2E here and elsewhere. (Let the buyer beware!) Bought one donation pack only to share it with fellow pirates here. Was ignorant ... more than usual ... with the first donation pack, unfortunately.

2. Did send a little money to Bluesoup for a subscription.

3. Sent whatever paypal info I had on the paysite in #1 to Kathy.

4. Do not plan to ever buy a donation pack or subscription again unless I'm going to share it here. And now EA has made it official ... I CAN share it. Not that that stopped me before.

5. Have donated money to free sites when I can.

6. Am always thankful to creators of free content, and make every effort to post "thanks" and praise.

7. If a creator even hints of yanking his or her stuff off a free site and going home, or in too many cases, going to TSR, posting whatever I have of his or her stuff here or in the Sims 2 Graveyard.

Me? Not too terribly much, I suppose.

I went with Bluesoup from filesharing home to filesharing home, trying to find bigger and better things, and I've shared content when I can afford to buy it. I hosted an early filesharing forum Blue created, then later discarded when we discovered SFV was bigger and cooler and much more organized. I hung out in IRC and threw in my two cents every now and then when Pes and Blue were kicking around the idea for this place, though admittedly my two cents didn't add up to much...

I posted links to SFV on my site before PMBD existed, and before it was acceptable to talk about filesharing in any way on a 'respectable' forum. Not too many people saw it, but it was out there, and it led a few more people to greener pastures. Now I have links to here as well, and host a fileshare friendly forum that openly refers people to the booty as well.

I try to add my voice whenever I can (and when it's appropriate) to telling everyone about how much I dislike paysites and where to get the booty. It's not a huge impact, but every person who learns that there is an alternative to paying for content is for the better.

Ok, I can't ignore this thread any longer. Mostly because it will seem odd and people will question my motives. That's right. You're ALL out to get me!!!

Uh... Sorry. Lack of sleep.

I have donated to the booty a few times and I have answered requests on SFV even fewer times.

I have pointed one or two lambs this way.

I signed that petition Nouk put up, although I'm not sure if that did anything.

I took a vow never to donate again unless it was for the booty and I stopped even looking at paysites altogether. I know now where to get better stuff.

All in all, I didn't really do squat. I'm not the most active person on this planet.

Frankly, not much. I signed the petition, asked other people to sign it as well and put the link to it in my blog, linked PMBD in my site next to the paysites, so people can see the shinny pics and download the contect from the booty. I talk about PMBD to other simmers whenever I have the opportunity. Didn't send the letter yet, but I'm gonna this week. Post office is so far from my home that's not even funny.
Now I'm thinking about uploading sims all made with paid stuff to the Exchange, because that's what paysites hate the most.

1. Never bought a file
2. Thread on offical site (still locked)
3. Had a great thread here re the legalities involved until it was deleted during the Great BlueSoup Rampage. ;)
4. Supported free sites with donations
5. Corralled Reno to the cause, of course.
6. Mention it every chance I get *points at sig, for an example*

Well, reading through that post I recognized that all did about just the same things. What about spreading that stuff via torrents and emule and so likes?
I know I found once the whole Harry Potter Set including Lyrics taken away stuff on torrent. Or make an advertising Myspace profile linking to that site?
