Title: Pimp My Sims
Post by: coliss on 2006 November 14, 04:33:38
Well, I didn't see it fitting anywhere else and I'm pretty sure the post would have been forgotten from the long existing threads here.

Solander from Pimp My Sims has posted his thoughts about the whole "free vs. pay" debate as he calls it:

http://www.thesims2-blog.com/2006/11/13/sims-2-downloads-free-vs-pay/

I have a bit of a headache now. Thank you.

I had a really hard time determining what was the actual point of that blog. The logic circles and contradictions were enough to make me a tad seasick.

Yeah, when I was reading it I thought he was one way on the debate... but then I kept reading and he seemed to have magically switched over?  :?

I guess it was supposed to look at all sides of it, but but but I got confused.

Not having read it yet, my opinions on solander, are that he is extremely good looking.  Little dissapointed he always uses the same picture of himself though

Of course I had to post. :P

Now I have to go back and look at a pic lol

Edit:  Oohh, he's pretty good-looking.

Is that pic him?

Well he is a handsome bloke, isn't he? Broody starving poet type, if you will.

His kitchen was one of the first cc's that I ever had in my game. I still use it even though it is blurry as hell as compared to the newer, shinier things.

I will have to agree that he is good-looking, ohyes.

Title: Pimp My Sims
Post by: Sherry on 2006 November 14, 04:56:34
Ok so to summarize what the drool worthy solander wrote is this:

He doesn't like and/or agree with what we filesharers are doing, though he can see just how some of these paysites have gone about bringing this problem upon themselves.  Some free stuff is better than pay, with a slight implication that he is talking about his stuff, so why are we complaining.  Overall "creators" should be able to sell or not sell their creations as they desire, but they should also stop calling them donations, as they are clearly not that.

I don't find him good-looking. But then, I like long hair, and guys who look more RAWK than he does...

His argument confused me highly, but I'm extremely tired right now...

I made it through 2 paragraphs. The poor spelling and still not knowing where he was going was enough for me. I do not know where he went with it, and do not care.
Womens taste in men frightens me.

I'm married too and the first thing I noticed when I clicked the link was his pic and thought he was pretty cute.  He has a similiar forehead and facial shape to my hubby though.  :)

*edit* And about Jimmy Kimmel, I seriously want to take all those girls from My Super Sweet Sixteen and bash them in the face, especially the chick who throws a fit because Eminem didn't come to her party.

And he is totally not cute.  He looks like a sexual predator.

True, true.

I think it's just that none of it made much sense so I think the majority of us just went back to talking about his looks.

He should have wrote less and posted more pictures of himself.

Well I guess at least his English is good enough that I wasn't sure if English was his first language or not.  Not that I have any problem with people learning and speaking in English, but it does make this whole thing annoying.  And painful for my poor little head, trying to make sense of the jibba jabba.

Maybe it was cold when they took the picture, so scarves are practical? I like men in scarves, as long as they aren't ascots. And to answer a question, we know he is gay because he is involved in a website called Gay Sims Club 2 (not everyone there is gay, but the ones that are don't hide it, of course).

Anyway, his logic may be a bit circular there, but at least he is trying to look at it from both sides. He doesn't come out and say that we are evil, evil people who should be erraticated, he does say there is some validity in our point, though he disagrees. Really, that's what more can we ask for than for people to actually take a look at our position even if they disagree?

And I agree with him that they should call purchases by their real names. If this is their job and how they "feed their kids", they should be taxed on it just like everyone else. You can't claim that this is your livelyhood, then claim to be accepting donations when the tax man comes.

'Zactly.  I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers, BUT - to move onto his blog entry...

The purpose of grammar, spelling, and good writing is to make your point clear and easily understood by others.  To make it compelling.  If I'm having to read and re-read a sentence twice to understand it, I'm going to discount it.  I may even think the person writing the piece is an idiot.  I'm not saying he is; I'm just saying if he wanted to get his point out to more people and actually make people think about what he's saying (as opposed to thinking about what it is he's trying to say)... well, a proof-read and a spell-check wouldn't have hurt.

And the sad thing is, I suspect I probably agree with some of his viewpoints, but I'm not going to spend 30 minutes trying decipher it this late at night/early in the morning.

Meh.  I'll cut him some slack - he's German, and considering the fact that I only speak two languages (english and profane ;-)) I won't fault him for less than perfect command of the language.

He looks like he's freezing his ass off, to me.  So man-scarf forgiven ;-)

The article gets a bit easier to understand towards the end.  Given that he's not a native english speaker, I can overlook a lot.  A lot of the run-on sentence structure and what-not is probably because he's thinking German and then trying to translate.

And lastly, I'd never even thought of the donation/IRS thing.  Yikes!  Question, though - does PayPal report to to anyone?  Or is it all just cash-under-the-table?  I've sold some stuff and taken payments over PayPal, but not in any serious amounts - mostly the odd eBay sale.

Post by: Solander on 2006 November 14, 08:47:50
Hi everyone,

i feel very sorry having caused headaches for some of you. Should anyone still experience headache or something comparable, please drop me a line and i can try collect some donations for you.

I maybe should have double-checked it, but i simply wasn't in the mood to do this, even it would maybe been better to do so.

But I really do not understand why some of you get so upset about this. Noone forces you to read and if you feel your brain beeing in danger, just stop reading and browse to another site. If you would write me in german, I would try do decipher it and if i wasn't able to do it, i would maybe ask for clarification. You would never receive a "if you can't write in german, just don't do it" message from me.

And yes, it has been scary cold when the picture was made.

Aww I feel bad now.  I don't think your post was that confusing, I was able to make a summary out of it.  I think we were having a bit of fun, as we were about other things in the thread, sorry if you took offense to it.   I don't think anyone meant that you aren't entitled to an opinion because English is not your first language.  English is my first language and I am a terrible speller.

Don't worry about your English, Solander. I don't think many people realized English was your second language. The fact that you write in more than one language is a really impressive thing, I think. And like I mentioned before, I am glad that you decided to look at the issue from all angles, even if you do disagree with us in principle. I wish more people would do so.

Title: Pimp My Sims
Post by: Solander on 2006 November 14, 12:13:52
When i decided to start a blog, I thougt about posting in german or english. I did choose english for one main reason. And this is, that as many people as possible can read it. If i had posted in german, about 10% or less of you guys would even had a chance to read.

So i did choose english, even i often feel not that confident. I know my spelling is sometimes a little "different". Maybe this is less important and less obvious, if i talk about something like meshes etc., but if I try to translate difficult german thoughts into english text, grammar and spelling sometimes sustain damage.

But the message was, that i do not agree with "free poor and lonely pay packages" supporters, even if I do understand some of the motives. And this should have survived the translation.

Solander

Edit: I'm really surprised how many information about me is available. I did not even think someone would notice at which sites i am registered or where I did post some time ago or what country i'm from :)

I'm glad when someone - like you - spend some time and effort trying to collect informations and thinking about an issue, instead of get rid of all the matter with some stereotyped sentences.

Regardless of Solander's affinities (or lack thereof), I've personally always enjoyed his site, especially the part of it that says his site will always be free, and that the Paypal donation button is there solely for that purpose, and you will get no "gifts" in exchange. That is how you run a site, IMO.

Come to think of it, I have quite a bit of his content via MTS2. Looking at his site now, I can see that the overall quality is pretty consistent and I'll likely be replacing a lot of the current custom sets I have with these. It's non buggy, nothing clips, and tastefully done. This is generally what I look for when donating (in the real sense, not the paysite sense) to a site.

Of course, the fact that's he's not a raving lunatic always helps. :p

Well, maybe i should post a short summary of my posting at my blog to make my position clear:

I don't agree with people sharing donation stuff for free. In my eyes, the creator of the stuff has at least the copyright on the mesh or texture (if he did it himself), so you are free to share the package, if you remove the mesh first ;)

But i do understand people getting angry, if everyone starts offering donation stuff and leaves only poor quality items for free. Especially, if even the quality of donation items drops.

Thats it.

And my picture can be found at MTS2 as well as TSR (i have been the evil himself when being a FA   ) as well as in some other profiles on several sites, including Pimp my Sims.com.

And i really thought about offering donation stuff in the past. I skipped it, as i think, my creations and those of my co-workers at Pimp my Sims should be free, but success can be quite expensive. At least, if someone wants to run a site like mine.

I use a content management system to handle the hundreds of files, relations ("show recolors for that item"-functions, credits) and i would like to run a website being as fast and easy to use as possible. This means, I now own the largest dedicated server version, which my provider offers. With high bandwith, no traffic limit, high end processor etc. 15,000 visitors and more visitors per day made this necessary, as previous servers simply could not handle such a traffic. Each day, about 200,000 pages are viewed and per month, the traffic sums up to more than a terabyte.

This does really cost a lot (if you buy all EPs for the sims 2, which have been and will be release, you won't reach the sum i pay per month), so I do understand, why some people charge for their creations(i don't say, they just pay their bills, there is something left for sure). I do not, but if i get mails from users flaming about "slow download" (at saturday night) or "the server was off for 15 minutes", i get really pissed. Most users don't even say thank you.

I mean, if you get everything for free and if the downloads are at least average or good quality, you can at least leave a short "thank you" message at the guestbook. But out of 1.5 million visitors since march 2006, there were only 468 (right now), who left a message. Lets assume 600 feedback messages (including those received by mail), you get a feedback ratio of about 0.0004%. In my eyes, this is damn low.

I'm not crying about his, but most users simply don't care about the poeple creating the stuff, paying the webspace and running their websites. And that's what makes me angry from time to time. If everything is for free at our page, downloaders could at least leave a message.

Hope, this posting is easier to understand than the one at my blog.

Solander

Edit: Could anyone please translate "SoCal fashionistas" for me?

That make sense, and is very much on the intelligent side of the counter-argument...*nods*

I believe what is meant by SoCal fashionistas is...fashiony people from Southern California (i.e., not the real world...)...but I may be wrong.

I think Jesse is right with the SoCal fashionistas - Southern California (aka LA) people who are so fashionable and trendy it almost hurts.

Oh, i'm not a SoCal fashionista. This picture was taken on a photo shoot for a friend, who studies "making photos" and i had to stand 3 hours at 1 or two degrees celsius in a windy horse stable. The scarve is the only reason i'm still here and can write  :D

I don't agree with people sharing donation stuff for free. In my eyes, the creator of the stuff has at least the copyright on the mesh or texture (if he did it himself), so you are free to share the package, if you remove the mesh first ;)

This is not true though, when YOU enter the mesh into the .package, you bind yourself to EA's terms and conditions.  They own it, you can modify it, but they will own the resulting product.  I work as an RA in a psychology research lab.  After (months/years) of work (research), articles by grad students, professors get sent to journals, once the journal accepts it the journal owns the rights to the article, and can edit out parts of the article as they see fit.  Not always fun, but that's the way it works.  You want your article to be published by a respect journal, for the glory, for the fame, (all for free btw, journals don't pay you a cent) you have to accept the terms.

EA gives us consent to share their .packages, we can share them whether or not you choose to put things you've worked on in them.

The only point of your argument that to me makes sense is the idea that perhasp we should give more respect to the people who work on the meshes.  To an extent I can agree, but I am the type of person who is likes being grateful.

Yet, I am also the type of person who doesn't like being taken advantage of.  I feel disrespected by some paysites who are clearly violating EA's terms of use just because they can make, buy or illegally download a mesh (ahem simbellas) and add it to a .package.  EA's terms are non-commerical.  PERIOD.   I create too, if I can accept the terms, why can't they?

You mention on your blog, that if EA cared about paysites (enforcing the non-commerical requirements of thier EULA), they could, yet they haven't, so therefore they do not care.  But that logic is circular, because I have been at a very active filesharing site for 4 years now (simsfilevault), dating back to TS1. EA knows about us, dozens of creators have written them, and they have no made moves to stop our distribution either.  All we learn form this is EA doesn't want to make a move either way, as neither side is really effecting them.

Costly, It can be but that is your choice.  If it is something you like doing, and or doing for others then it is good for you.  When I started creating I didn't expect people to fund my purchase of new expansions.  Think about if eveyrone had to pay for every creators EP's, what next then, should we buy them computers too?  Further, there are plenty of costless way to distribute your creations.  I don't have any of those things you mention and somehow people can still download my work.   I hate to say this a million times but if the *costs*, whether they are monetary, time and effort, or gratification related are too much for creators then it is probably seriously time they stopped.

Lastly, I haven't downloaded any of your creations, I don't download much now that I create, but I do appreciate and respect your decisions to give them away for free.  So thank you for that, for what it's worth.

Edit:  Typos, yep there are probably more but I need to start dinner.

@sherry: i didn't complain about the costs, Pimp my Sims.com generates each month. I did choose to run a site like mine (as i pointed out above) and i have to deal with the consequences.

But if you start a huge party which is know for its fun factor, offer free beer as much as everyone likes and if you then don't charge anything, a little "hey, cool, thanks you did this" by at least some of the guests would be nice, hm? But with the feedback ratio at our site, you had to start a party for 2,500 people to have at least 1 person say thank you.

Ok, maybe that comparison is not that perfect, as you get feedback watching people have fun. But i don't. I never see people enjoy my creations or the ones of my co-workers. I mostly (95%) get support mails of people asking for meshes, general "can you repair my pc and wash my car" mails and those flame mails, i talked about before. So feedback is definetely something i am looking for. That's the only thing I charge. Something personal from users, who enjoy using our stuff. I don't request novels, but a short sentence like "hey, i really like your stuff" or something like this really makes my day!

edit: No, i don't have a donation button. I had, but only some really nice people donated and, well, i needed the space in the top navigation for "more important" links. So i dropped it.

Well I have to agree, I think it is sad that people are not more grateful when creators do sacrifce so much for their enjoyment.  I don't drink, but I hear beer is costly so I understand that point ;)

My point was more in saying, not that creators should have to buden themselves with all the costs of creation, but there is clearly a line that many cross in making paysites, and if they are using the excuse of expansions, computers, monthy internet fees is downright silly to me.

It's a pity that not as many people thank you or donate to your site, I have seen your work and it is certaily top notch.  I wonder why it's so hard to get voluntary donations?  Maybe because it's hard *donate* for even a good number of the pay content out there.  I think if less sites, were forcing less donations on simmers, more would certainly throw a buck your way.  That's my opinion though.

Also, I didn't know you could ask creators to wash your car.  I have some laundry that needs to be folded if you have time ;)

Cheers to all! what if all site owners had these talks and all pay-site owners as well...would that be actual conversation? Would it actually be a way for all to co-exsist? Too bad so many have screamed and threatened instead of talking...

I have long respected Solander as a designer...that respect is now raised to respect for being willing to talk and listen and for being intelligent and fun!

Interesting how all this has brought repect to those who so deserve it and disrespect to those who have it coming. Very nice...some people should learn from this!

My issue wasn't grammar mistakes.

I can forgive mispellings and grammar mistakes because I know that not everyone has English as a first language. (Unless you insist on typing in chatspeak. Then I might have to hunt you down and kill you for making my eyes bleed.)

But grammar and spelling? Eh. As long as I can get to the point.

I do, however, have trouble following circular logic. The topic went all over the place and never actually addressed the point.

He has since come here and clarified what he meant. No harm, no foul.

don't know. In fact, i don't need the money right now. This has been one reason, why i removed the button. I can pay my server bills with my own money without having to sing at the mall with no shoes, so donations are not neccessary.

As pointed out above, some feedback is really enough in my eyes. I enjoy creating stuff but knowing someone likes it, is even better. If you just count numbers like traffic, visitors or something else, you don't know, if they all did put the downloads into the trashcan right after testing them ingame. Unlikely, i know ;), but i like to "read" than just to "imagine" :)

A lot of people are tough on fellow English speakers for not being able to handle their native language coherently, partially it is just poking fun at them. When someone who is not a naitive speaker makes the effort to communicate, by and large just about everyone here will be more than willing to overlook the errors because writing in a non native language is hard! I would cringe to think of what french speakers would think of my feeble attempts at their language. So no worries Blue, we aren't that mean :P

It is kind of weird how your activities around the community make their rounds and people know what you're up to. I remembered Solander being on GSC2 because I've registered and lurked around there to snag some of the creations and things.

Feedback from people who appreciate your stuff IS really nice, I totally agree. I love getting little thank you notes in my guestbook and things. Sure, it may seem like just a trifle, but a little gratitude and appreciation for your efforts really does go a long way.

That's the only thing I blame lots of users for. It's so easy to browse a site, download everything you like and leave. If the content was created bit by bit with lots of accuracy and a love of details isn't rewarded.

And the hard facts like traffic etc. don't say anything. If you look at people around you in real life, they do tend to grab anything, if it is promoted and free. Place some real crap on a table, scream "free" and you will be left with nothing 5 minutes later.

Just to put my two cents in hours late:  Even though I find your English a bit painful to understand, Solander, I'm still impressed that you can converse in more than one language.  I can't, so I, at least, have nothing to critisize you over.

Well, I wasn't always so insensitive. For example:  I went to your site today to say thank you and I've spent about 20 minutes there trying to post. I couldn't figure out what the hell was the matter it just kept coming back with 'fill out all fields'. Then I turned off my cookie blocker and it went through.
I don't like cookies and I don't understand why some sites want gift me with one. Of course if its essential (passwords etc) I allow it but the majority of the sites want to place not one but three or four on my computer. No thanks.
The other problem is that MTS2 gets pretty crowded by the time I get there and I'm happy if I get the download to work before I fall of the chair.

And I have to disagree with "Place some real crap on a table, scream "free" and you will be left with nothing 5 minutes later" I play with Sims2 for about 2 years now and I only have less than 2 megabytes in my download folder. I'm very picky what I download and I - just like the majority- don't like crap. Not everybody is a ..um... dowloadholic(sp?) Is there such a word?

The guestbook ist cookie protected? Have to check this tonight, but i used to implement some "anti-porn-site-mass-posting-robots" protection features.

And to make a last statement regarding sharing donation stuff.

As i said before, i'm not a lawyer. So i am not in the position to really understand the whole legal stuff EA and others do ship with each game. But it does nonetheless not feel right to me, if the creator has no right to determine what happens with his creations. I don't say it is not right, i just say, it does not feel right.

@Blue: I don't think every single visitor of my site is an "oh, it's free, lets grab it" type, but if you look at the traffic caused by our visitors, most seem to even download the background picture of the website ;)

I press the download button sit back in my comfy armchair and just wait...wait...wait...until I almost fall asleep.
I guess that's the time when the other side of the globe gets up and jumps MTS2.

You should be happy they like your work so mush. And yeah, your site does ask for cookies. :)

Do you take requests?

Robot porn means stupid robots flooding  my guestbook with hundreds of postings with links to every single porn site available at the net. I got bored of deleting them and implemented some protection features, but maybe i should reduce security in favour of a higher usability.

I did take requests in the past and maybe will do again. My blog is intended to be used for things like this. I am planning to post my new creations their, ask users if they would like to see something special included in the set or even propose completely new sets. So this could maybe be called "i do take requests"

I'll try to create some new stuff tonight, so maybe there will something to comment or to add new proposals.

Eww

Also what's with hXXp://www.simforum.de/ :(  I do find it funny that Sera is on this site LOL.  She the biggest theif of them all.  I guess no one she stole from can speak German though so she is safe there.  There were enough people on my forum she who knew what she steals to run her off the off the site for her hypocrisy.

It's no wonder sometimes it's hard to take people seriously when they talk about integrity and such when you look at the company they keep.  I would rather have 100 filesharers as my friends than Sera.

Don't forget to ask him to wash your car and do your dishes ;-)  Put a couple of links to porn sites in there, maybe a couple of derogatory comments, and absolutely NO "thank you"s, or "please"es, and you should be good ;-)

I am being to hard on him.  He works alot longer and at the office than I do, and brings home the majority of the Bacon so to speak.  Plus I can still get him to do the things I won't, shovel the driveway, take out the garbage and clean the kitty litter and he even does the dishes because I cook.  I think I have it made but shhhhh don't let him know that.

I'm so freaking late to jump on that topic, but I'll still do it ;) ... the bad thing about that place is not the langauge barrier, but the complete ignorance of the fan-dom gathered there. It is much like the issue with the "put a bunch of crap on a table and call it free" ... most folks simply don't care if they download from a thief or the original creator.

So try and go complaining about the theft on the boards. You won't get a point there. A good friend of mine tried to, not only once and speaking for herself as well as English speaking creators, just to find herself in a flame  war of the finest sort. Maybe it has become better by now, I don't know, but in those days of Sims 1 and when Sims 2 was brand new, some German boards were a pain.

Well, I don't care if file sharing is considered illegal or not, but giving credit where credit is due is a must in my opinion. Good thing that I'm just a consumer, not a creator...

I absolutely think it's um funny? (cause irony is a literary devise) that some of the people who hang our with Sera can cast judgement on what we are doing.  I am not just talking solander here, but Teko, who likes to start his own wars with us over at the SFV... is still hanging out with a huge theif.  I mean Sera only steals others content, claims and as her own and then sells it as a donation.  Wonder why so many of her donations disappear?

I guess the sim community forgets easily when it comes to creator disputes.  Who cares Sera was slightly modifying SimChic meshes and selling them, then which creator was it she did the sam thing to on TSR, I forget?  Who cares at one time in TS1 land exnem was wildy considered a theif because of stealing and claiming content from 8DS?  Sheeple will follow anyone.  Yuck.
