OMG that toilet is horrifying. If you don't post it in the contest thread, I will.

I'm so proud of whowever added us to the ED thread! Bravo/brava.

I think it's actually an article we could add to, since there are some other insane things that the game does that we can rant about.

I think I pee'd myself laughing.......

The Sims 2 official site is obviously the largest of the sims communities, probably because it is official. At this particular site, one can find such exciting things as the BBS and the exchange.
The BBS is home to 13-year-old boys, 16-year-old girls,
and pedophiles pretending to be 16-year-old girls.
It should be avoided at all costs.

The exchange is home to pure crap made by small children who think they are now intranet celebrities because they know how to take a Maxis mesh, bucket-fill it in MS Paint, slap on face #1 in Bodyshop. Ta-da! The exchange is also home to stories by 9-year-olds with horrific graphics cards and a broken caps lock key.

Bascially, after a page of calling the TS2 community on all its strange pecadillos, a note at the bottom says something to the effect of, "for free sims content, click here"...and it's a link to the booty.

Muahahahahaha!

As soon as ED's up again, we should get a screenshot.

Oy, on the topic of cussing it makes me think of my second cousins and distant relatives.  Stupidly I agreed to join their WoW guild and I was not happy when I discovered what tight asses they were.  You couldn't say "ass" in guild chat... They called it a cuss word.  -.-   However, it was perfectly fine to make innuendo in guild chat while all the chilluns were online.  Ass is part of your anatomy.  It is NOT a cuss word.

These people are also ones to make their children call their genitals "pee pee" and "vagasaurus" making their self image of their bodies horribly a skewed like nudity being bad and not understanding the workings of their body.  Puberty?  Hell, don't teach them about that at all!  Sex?  Abstain from it of course!  This teaching has proved to fail horribly and the south in particular fails to recognize that.. just look at the southern teen pregnancy statistics.. my cousin was one of them.

And yes, they screw these kids up so badly they grow up and still use that silly language even to their doctors.  It also inhibits them from breaking free and learning what they should of about their bodies years ago like all these womens that can't have orgasms on their own or can't even with the partner they love and trust.

The most tragic part of it?  They pass it down to their kids as their parents did.  It's a horrible cycle that just won't go away.

Erm, yeah, that came out of left field, didn't it?  Yeah..

This reminds me of an episode of Scrubs, where one of the women doctors has such a hard time with anatomically correct words for sexual organs, she can't even say them in a medical context. There's a great scene with her standing in front of her boyfriend, and she says, "Kevin, you have a ...penis, and I have a.......vagina." His reply? "That talk is SO HOT!" and he drags her to bed.

And Calalily, of COURSE with sexy results....she's the Lady Grace, you know. <wink>

You, Yaardarm Monkey are certainly no lady - to categorise the words in such ways, and then to *shame* know examples!

And as for those of you using such terms as *avert your eyes* vagasaurus *look back again* - this is not the words of a lady.  It is either "my lady place" if one is coarse, or my garden of delights if, like me you are a lady.

We're experiencing a strange state of affairs when it comes to sexuality...and almost everything, frankly... in the US right now...

The modus operandi in the 'sanctioned' public discourse is Scaring is Caring: make us fear the internet, the Muslims, the feminists, the gays, the teachers, and sex itself ...and we will follow. It's fire and brimstone meets democracy.

It's unfortunate that evangelical Christianity has produced this non-secular attitude. Healthens like me were, unfortunately, blindsided by it, and so while we scramble to make changes, we watch sex ed being all about abstinence rather than safety, creationism being introduced back into science classes, etc.

And so...we have in government, in classrooms, in many areas of life, a resurgence of Puritan ethic: God is the only authority, and everything subsequently is a black and white issue. Good and evil. Pure and soiled. Saved and unsaved. Sacred and profane.

It's a scary thing...not every American believes all that, of course...but it's more prevalent than people like me wish it to be.

<sigh>

I hope we get a president in 2008 who doesn't consider the Constitution 'a suggestion'.

Well I noted in the FAQ of site issues that they've now included spamming (which to my mind means that they have to erase that silly of silliness the funny things and blogthings section, yet they haven't) and excessive quotes used to harass people.  Personally, I think at least half the posters there need a kick in the arse.

It can't be because of the whole paysite thing, because we know oniella is the love slut of paysites.  I just wonder if she'll come back.  :D

Note that I like the Freudian slip typing here - mistake of heathens with Healthens. :) We know what you think is more healthy.

I personally believe that it is the political lobbying power now held by the new evangelical churches.  I notice here, where they are just starting to make their presence felt, that they lure in the young professionals, who get a couple of manicures for their troubles, and then use that to push votes, as well as buy political favours.  Not through money (because the state largely funds electoral campaigns here, different to the US) but through having a political stranglehold on the young professional votes.  One of the current government campaigned from one of the big churches in the last election to get that vote.

And of course, these churches are so popular because they really tell you that you're fulfilling God's wishes for you by getting rich (something that Jesus did of course, with his many, many mansions).

I think that this absinancy policy is making kids unaware of the dangers of having sex. There have been more pregnancies because of this policy than from simple teen pregnancy. I mean, in places (such as France) where they talk about sex naturally and they have sex shops on the main roads, there is a much lower level of teen pregnancy. MUCH lower.

A great podcast that discusses creationism and ID as a favorite target is the Skeptics Guide to the Universe (http://www.theskepticsguide.org/index.asp), it's a really funny and intelligent show that tackles many of the topics discussed here.

As for the treatment of sexuality and sex education in the US, I am constantly shocked that such a dangerous methodology is the supported one. I know that not everywhere in the US treats these topics the same way, but there is still a large portion of the population being taught that they can simply will their desires away (despite all of the pressures from things like, say, human biology). It also implies that if you fail at remaining abstinent (which I assume almost all of these students would) or heterosexual (because it's just a choice, right?   ), and get into trouble or need to talk to someone, that it's your own fault for not being strong enough to not give in. God forbid anyone get correct information about prevention of STDs or avoiding teen pregnancy through the use of condoms and other contraceptives.

(Edit: spelling mistake!)

I remember when they wanted to put condom machines (you can buy condoms for a small fee) in high school bathrooms and there was a huge stink about that.  Teenagers are going to have sex no matter what and to have access to condoms is great.  It's like those tampon machines they put in bathrooms.  Just because it's there doesn't mean people *have* to buy them, ya know?  So the idea that having condoms for sale is encouraging them to have sex is just silly.

Yeah my mother had this "abstinence or death, your choice my dear" attitude (not because of religion, but because she couldn't bear the thought I suppose). It accomplished one thing only: that it made damn sure she had no idea what I was actually doing (and it wasn't actually having sex, I waited some time for that) but just made sure I was supremely secretive about my life, and that I left the house as soon as I could. Personally, I'd rather teach children (once they're old enough) about the perks and dangers alike and let them make their own choices, because ultimately it boils down to that: having enough information to make the right choice for yourself. I think a lot of parents have this attitude because they're terrified of the idea that their kids might make a bad choice -as if that's avoidable in life.

Title: "This article is a stub. You can help out by..."
Post by: Ensign EO on 2007 May 13, 21:32:33
At my old school I'm pretty sure you could get condoms from the nurse's office--here in ND they just scoff at the idea.

I'm sensing a great concentration of underaged drinkers and drug users (pot smoking, et cetera) in ND.  Oh, but jeez, they're so conservative, so much purer, and all together better than the coastal states.  Of course.

My parents never talked to me about sex or dating.  Not that I'm able to or would want to speak to my mother anyway.  I just kind of figured things out on my own--I hate studying for school, but I do a lot of independent research on topics that interest me.  My father still doesn't say anything to me about anything, but if I fuck up I'm sure he'll be more willing to help me fix it than my mother is.

The key to discouraging bad choices is to point and laugh at them. Forget that "supportive" crap. If people know you'd actually SUPPORT bad decisions, they'd most assuredly make them. No, you should mock them without mercy.

Rofl, I just got a funny mental image of Pescado guffawing at a squirming, screaming toddler who broke his toy

But seriously, bad choices are part of life. Nothing teaches survival skills better than taking responsability for your actions and not doing something "because mommy/daddy said so". Not jumping off a cliff because it'll kill you is a good reason; "mommy said so" isn't. Guidance only goes to a certain point. While I'm not as drastic as Pescado, I hate hate parents who coddle (is that the word? English sometimes annoys me) and over-protect their children.

Coddle is a perfectly cromulent English word, Ghanima, and you've used it correctly.

I think it's important for people to have all the (correct) facts especially as it relates to health and well being.

Heh, lol.  I hate parents who coddle their kids--I've gotten in trouble with more parents than I wanted to because their kid bitched about me to them.  Not like I ever got in a lot of trouble with my dad about my behaviour--he just told me to be more careful.  I'm sure those parents would have a fit if they found out that my dad never "dealt" with me after permanently damaging their children or whatever the hell it is I did.

Any time I talk to my dad about someone bothering me, he just offers things like, "Tell him that you are indeed a whore and he owes you two hundred dollars for all the dirty talking he's been doing."

Your dad is Pescado?

Regarding "healthens"...I only do the best Freudian slips!

Regarding Lorelei's love....accepted!

Regarding "coddle"...great word, perfect usage, and SUCH a sad thing to see happening. I find it such a strange manner of raising kids...my sister, a first grade teacher, is currently battling the will of a kid who was so badly coddled by his mom AND his former school, he was allowed to go home and play video games rather than stay in school. now he's at his dad's, and Dad/new school/my sis won't play that game.

What's also scary is that it's my generation that's coddling their kids, and I can't figure out why. Was our upbringing so bad? We got the first Apple computers, boom boxes, Atari...we started mallrat culture...we were raised on Sesame Street and The Cosby Show, for goodness' sake. I don't get it.

Regarding abstinence only teachings....tell teenagers not to do something, and they'll do it.

Regarding creationism...a few years ago, Discover Magazine (a US science publication) put out a cover that said "EVOLUTION IS A FACT"...and proceeded to talk about how the scientific method had proven evolution is no longer a theory. I think that's about the time we first started hearing about "Intelligent Design". Hah.

Post by: mando on 2007 May 13, 23:57:20
Yeah, intelligent design is just creationism in a bad wig and glasses. When they start actually being able to prove anything worthwhile about that "theory", I'll stop saying that people who believe it are creepy weirdoes.

I'm so glad I'm Danish. I haven't seen much of all that idiocy around here. Of course, could be that I'm just blind.

My mom had me at 17. Nothing particularly good or bad about that. Doctors told her she was sterile and she found out she was not. Shit happens and I dare say she was actually quite happy to prove the docs wrong in this case.

My parents never kept any of that crud from me. And the library had plenty of books on the matter. I remember at about age 7 or 8 I was reading books about fetus development. Of course, I always was a rather strange kid, reading all sorts of stuff. People who didn't know me didn't credit that I actually comprehended what was in there. Stupid sods.

I even remember at the same age and a few years older telling all my friends and my younger brother (yes, indeed, my mom proved to be a rather fertile sterile woman   ) the details about how babies were made.

Of course, if I didn't know the answer I made up something I thought sounded probably. Like, babies being born wrong (retarded etc) due to more sperm coming in and nibbling at them later... or some such nonsense.

Anyhoo, where was I? Ahh yes, adding another chapter of my life story.

Very open family. Very free. My mom always told me not to settle for the first guy that came along, to play the field a bit. Get some experience and make sure I chose right. Of course, my mom always did seem to end up with losers, so I understand her point of view.

And my, otherwise very unsympathetic dad, told me that if I became pregnant it wouldn't be a big issue, everyone would help me take care of the baby.

Of course, now at 25---uhh... 24, I mean, what I get from them is more of a "Where is that baby?" vibe.

I mostly liked my parents' approach to the whole thing and I plan of being much the same. I had all the green lights in the world and yet waited for longer than most girls I know did. Funny bit is that my mom was actually very proud of me for that. She thought me very smart and strong not to succumb to boys. Didn't have the heart to tell her that most local boys thought me too strange to try anything anyway.

Yeah, intelligent design is just creationism in a bad wig and glasses. When they start actually being able to prove anything worthwhile about that "theory", I'll stop saying that people who believe it are creepy weirdoes.

Well, there is the theory which states that the world was created last Tuesday, such that it appears older, much like fake aged paper.

It's not only the current generation, but the one before it.  We constantly have students coming in and demanding that they did so well in high school, therefore they should have top marks at university (forgetting of course, that they are competing with others who got top marks).

They seem to think that they are the best at everything, even if they are crap.  I had a student that told me that because she got a 6 (distinction) in another subject, why was she getting a 4 (pass) in mine, and that despite the fact that I had been her tutor for all that time and read her work, I should check with her other tutors for her good marks in other classes.

As for why parents do it? Combination of guilt because they work, and the pop psychology crap that says you should only say good things about your kids or you'll crush their spirit.  That coupled with the obsession for looking for the root of all your problems, even when you're 50, starting in childhood.  Some people think that all their crap started because mummy left them at the shops when they were five, and thus, parents are extra careful to avoid any bad stuff in their kids' childhood.

Eh, kids also need to learn that they aren't good at everything and they really can't be anything they want.  A grown man standing at 4'8" can't play basketball.  Even at my slimmest and fittest I was a very slow runner.  Of course you wouldn't say to the kid, "You can't do this."  You'd steer them toward things you see they have potential in and hope that your daughter doesn't become stripper just because she likes to dance.

Yeah.

It's true...there are people who believe the verdict in the Scopes trial was wrong. (See here, (http://www.answers.com/topic/scopes-trial) or watch Inherit the Wind, with Spencer Tracy.)

Pop psychology is annoying, since most of it is usually founded on theories that haven't been properly tested, if even tested at all. If individuals would actually take a look at the real, supported psychology, then they wouldn't have this problem with sheltering/coddling their children. They would know that it is an ineffective and harmful way of raising a child. There needs to be a balance between a permissive parenting style and a dominating parenting style and this really isn't anything new. Studies about what kind of parenting style produces the best results have been around for quite some time. But, like usual, individuals tend to ignore anything that is the least bit logical.

And it has already been proven that abstinence-only programs, and those silly purity rings (http://www.waitt.org/), not only don't work but that they come with an obviously much higher rate of teenagers coming away with more STDs and HIV infections since they were never taught proper means of protection and safety.

About intelligent design, well I'm going to have to agree with mando on that one.

Abstinence-Only programs are being taught because the school districts need federal money.  Although, for the most part, I think that the majority of our country needs to learn a thing or two about self-control, I don't think this is the best way to do so.  Since it clearly doesn't work.

Beware, tl;dr rant ahead!

I want to find the individuals who came up with that and crush their reproductive organs. Excessive coddling will likely give your kids a false perception of how life works, so when they go out into the real world, they end up as completely maladjusted pricks who want everything handed to them. They will proceed to throw all manner of self-destructive tantrums and invent psychoses ("omg my parents never loved me!") so that some moronic psychiatrist can prescribe them a pill for what could've easily been cured in childhood by decent parenting and not this new-age Barney bullshit.

Quite frankly, I find the systematic pussification of America appalling. This is becoming a nation of spoiled little brats who have no concept of how to relate to their fellow human outside of the "gimmegimmegimme" mentality. They're terrified of criticism, minor failures, or any sort of disapproval and they react violently when met with anything but mindless, sycophantic praise.

I hate these people and I have to deal with them on a day-to-day basis. "Omg this test is so hard because it's not all multiple-choice!" Why the fuck are you in college if you didn't expect difficulty? Or "I got straight A's on papers in high school so this must be a bad teacher!" No, your writing is shit and you've just been confronted with that sad reality. But nooooo, these idiots congregate and with the spasming of their collective brain cell, form a plan to get the professor reprimanded/fired.

Ughughugh*explodes*

It's a good thing people can come here then, heh.
When I was going to art school, this kind of behaviour was crushed out of people right quick. It sounds weird to say, especially since the perception of an art school is that it would be touchy feely, happy crap, but it was a place where you would have to be confronted with constant critcism not just from your teachers, but from your peers (students) as well. It's hard to say that your work is masterpiece, when you're confronted with 10-30 people who tell you it's a piece of shit and makes no sense.

*claps*  SPOT ON, mando.  This is how it is for me in my art schooling as well.  First few times they put you and your artwork to be judged by the teacher and class can be very trying but you get used to it and (should) like that amount of honesty.

ETA:  Feedback from your peers and teachers is extremely important because they may see (and do) what you can't in the artwork that is not working.  You get wrapped up in it while making the artwork so it's harder for you to see it objectively.  They look at it with fresh eyes.

Learning how to do constructive criticism helps being more receptive to others' comments about yours as well.

Absolutely, I always felt better for it. It let me see where any problems I was having were (e.g. "Wow, they're right. This really is a piece of shit"), and gave me the opportunity to correct them or rethink what I was doing. It also taught the students the valuable lesson of not believing that criticism of your work is equal to personal criticism, no matter how harsh it is. "My work is not myself" might have been one of the most important lessons I learned at school.

I'm actually surprised that this kind of thing isn't done more in other disciplines, as it would probably cut down on that "I am awesome" crap. I know that in the sciences peer review is standard as well. I suppose in larger classes it would be difficult to do, but better to crush those spirits earlier than later, I say   .

I had a professor who's going for tenure - last semester he assigned papers in one of his classes, and some girl did so badly that she immediately broke down crying. He has a policy where you get to revise and resubmit a certain amount of papers and he'll take the higher of the two grades, so fucking one up isn't such a big deal. He tried to comfort her with this knowledge, and put his hand on her shoulder. The next thing he knows is that there's a sexual harassment complaint with his name on it, signed by the girl in question and several other members of the class with lackluster grades on that essay. Hilariously, some of the students who signed this thing were male.

This guy's always in trouble with students for refusing to hand out undeserved grades, which is a shame, because he's a really good teacher. Glad things worked out in your case, though.

who would hide behind a site who pays spendable kudo bribes for copy and paste praise and yet hands out bans for constructive critism.

who would cause a riot on TSR, now known as the infamous 'ratings war' because she felt her ugliness was under rated

Yes - *to make hollow laughing sound* - he wants to make S2C of higher quality - so just like MTS2, people will stop posting.

The reality is that the effect of the changes is that he's pushed all the foolish posts into other areas that weren't foolish before.  The debate room is soon to become the discussion area with the way its going.

Personally, I don't see how you can make a thousand threads on sims gameplay "higher quality".
