Post by: aerodynamic on 2007 April 23, 14:54:11
recently something both annoying and amusing happened. my main sims2 download folder crapped out at about 22,000 files and refused to take anything new unless it was in a subfolder. suspecting it is because of some of the filenames in other languages and whatnot from chinafan sims and other sites.

has this happened to anyone else? I found it rather funny but very frustrating nevertheless.

so now I have a 5000+ file subfolder that I am hoping won't crap out anytime soon XD

Maybe that's got something to do with your file system.
Each Windows file system (FAT32, NTFS, etc) had a limit in how many files are allowed within a folder.

...22,000 files?

Okay so I really don't have anything to add to that, it's just a cover to distract people while I tell you that your pirate corgi icon is ridiculously awesome.

Ha - I kick your arse - I have 20gbs waiting to be installed - and that's all Bodyshop stuff - I'm staying away from objects at the mo.

I only have hacks installed right now.

When I did have custom content included before I reinstalled, I had 10,000 files in 6 months - and that's before I found the booty.

I am an uncontrollable hoarder - like it - download it - store it forever.

I ended up having to learn how to pack stuff into .far files with the sims 1, because despite what they said, the download limit was 3.2gb.

my ocd twitch is going crazy, you really have *twitch* 22, 000 files *twitch* just lumped into one big folder? *twitch*

I have around 30,000 files, but oh, around *cough*900*cough* sorted subfolders.

Yeah with 22000 downloads i think sub folders are a good idea. Remember Organization is our friend.

I learned my lesson i had all 15000 of my downloads thrown into one folder and I had a major problem with one of them and Seasons.. I have had to take out all the downloads a few times and finally am now organizing them as i put them in a few at a time. Believe me.. you will be much happier to have then in sub folders in the long run.

I'm also a huge downloadaholic and hoarder.  The scary thing is that I ran across this thread the other day that spoke of the game crashing in catalogue mode if there are more than 48,000 items or 10.5 gig worth of stuff in the game (I'm not sure, but I think it depends on your system).

Would it depend on how fast the computer is or how much RAM it has?

(Sorry, I don't know much about computers.   )

OMFG!

I only have about 5k files at the moment. I am trying to restrain myself until I get stuff better sorted. I still need to bin a buttload of hair that is very nice but SHOULD be binned (I do a little of the time so as to not expire from boredom) and I have a major amount of unsorted stuff that's dumped directly into my downloads root.

My current nightmare is sorting walls, floors and recolours of objects in-game... Word to the wise: Do NOT get all the simsquirts booty... It's just too much and even if you, say, delete all of 2005 just to have LESS it's still bad     (Also, tbh, a lot of it doesn't look THAT good in-game)

But I am sort of proud of how I deleted all bad clothes from every single age group  :D I'm getting there... Until my next downloading spree.  :?

Thanks, Darkangel!  :D

I feel you, MizzKitty!  Homecrafter is great for sorting out walls and floors (and for editing the prices on the custom ones), but I think I spend most of my time in the Make a Family part of the game deleting sucky skins and hair.   I dread doing it again because I just downloaded a bunch of new stuff for the game.  :?

Thanks :) Maybe I should see if Homecrafter still craps out on me or if it has learned to behave. For a while almost any program crapped out on me, probably had some crappy mesh lying around.

I quickly found that skins/eyes/clothes/hair/makeup/accessories was much easier sorting using Bodyshop. It can take forever and a day to load, but for sorting that I highly recommend it.

I also recommend watching TV while doing it so as to retain your sanity.

I can't do it in BS. Especially not accessories. It takes you ten pages to get to what you want, you delete it, and it takes you back to the blooming beginning again!!

Another great wall/floor utility is jfades WTF Editor...found at DJS Sims (http://www.djssims.com/index.php?category=21).

Not only can you recategorize/reprice, but you can use a batch utility that will rename ALL the floor and wall files to the names creators use in the game (no more wall0543154673...it's now Flower Power Girls Wall)

True, but I didn't personally have such a hard time with it, though...

Doesn't it do that in CAS as well, though? At least with hair, gawd, sorting hair in CAS just made me NUTS.

Now see I thought I was a download whore. I have about 2 GB (1,733 MB) with 7,541 files, separated into 73 sub-folders. All folders are alphabetically listed by either "creator" or category (I.E. some of my garage doors were just numbers so I put them in a folder "Garage Doors"). I do this as I am unzipping them.

That way I know where something is in case it makes my game want to crap out.

I consider myself somewhat organised when it comes to downloading.  I have to be fairly selective when it comes to the CC in my game because my computer just can't handle a ton of stuff.  What I do is have a couple folders on my desktop to sort the various things I download into, and then when the folders are full enough I'll sort through them.  I found it works best if you rename your original downloads folder to something else  temporarily, and create a new one for the new downloads so the game/BS takes less time to load.  After I'm done I also scan the leftovers to get rid of any orphan files.

And yeah, the five items per page thing in BS is annoying, although I've found it's less painful if you use the scrollbar instead of the arrows.

Well, as for me, my downloads folder is currently running with more than 24.000 CC worth around 10 Gigs of HD space
To help me deal with the headache of organizing it, i'm using these wonderful utilities :

1. Delphy's Download Organizer
    It's here:
    http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=227925

2. Sims2Pack Clean Installer
    It's here:
    http://sims2pack.modthesims2.com/

3. SimPE
    It's here:
    http://sims.ambertation.de/
I use SimPE mostly for scanning package health, and with plugin i can
use it to search for orphan mesh/recolor

4. Hack Conflict Detection Utility by Paladin
    It's here:
    http://www.simwardrobe.com/

Each tool had it's own pros and cons. Don't forget to read the manual if you decide to use it.
I hope it's useful ^_^

I got those too bebas :)

I was very pleased when Delphy's DO for once didn't crap out on me today and allowed me to move all floors and walls into a separate folder...

Other times it just crashed when I tried something like that

Anyhoo, I am slowly sorting through it now... And what amount of crap I have! For each one I keep I'm deleting at least 10.  :?

I don't think my PC likes the .net framework.

I downloaded it, then the clean installer and it never did work, so I uninstalled both, reinstalled... still nothing. Clean installer would crap out as soon as I opened it. I'd love to try Delphy's but it runs off the .net too!

Ooooh, I love you for pointing out that add-on!  I absolutely detest IE (especially the new version which is just trying to imitate Firefox).  Most of the time it doesn't even work on my computer.  Unfortunately, some sites don't run well on Firefox so it's a necessary evil, but this makes it all better!

Nope because I never could get it to show up. I never had the cute little icon on my toolbar. I don't know why either because the other add ons that I have and themes work great.

Right now I am using the theme "Metal Lion Vista" I picked that up yesterday I think. :D

All crappy hair, outfits, make up, accessories, walls, terrains, floors, recolours, objects, duplicates and orphans are GONE!

I am down to 3739 files and I have several pages bookmarked that I'm just ITCHING to raid!

BUT I still have to colorbin a butt-load of hair before I allow myself this luxury...

But still! Better! Huzzaaah! And THIS time I will START with being organised.

I don't have it on my toolbar either.  I can't remember if it doesn't appear by default, or if I removed it by customizing.

Still, the one down on the status bar shows up just fine, right between NoScript and AdBlock, and I generally use that anyway to set up the IE sites list, or swap between engines.

Not sure of the effect of various themes, but I wouldn't have thought it would matter.  How strange.

Well, I admit, I'm using a really boring theme (GreyModern2), so....

If it helps, IE Tab should also appear on the Tools menu, right in that section above Options at the bottom.  My setup also shows RefControl Options in that bit.

I use the old tool. Somewhere on the SimPE forum there's a little snip of code you can write into some file and it will load seasonal stuff... and colour binning does work...

Right now, however, I'm about to lose my temper at the hair and just delete the lot of it. Buncha crap non-binned or wrong-binned hair! *pout*

This is the thread of ultimate sadness.  I'll join in!

I'm in the process of re-downloading all my custom content because, in the process of trying to get Seasons to work, I forgot to backup my downloads folder for one of the steps and the whole thing was deleted.  I had 12GB of CC.  And I had almost finished a house that I had spent literally a week building and decorating, so I'm not starting my game again until I have all that CC back, dammit.

On the plus side, my downloads folder did need a good wipe since my standards for what I will and will not download has raised considerably.

I read his/her Wiki, but there is nothing about this that I can see. Shouldn't it list the orphaned files just like it does duplicates? Am I doing something wrong?

i find it interesting that some people un-zip/RAR the files indiviually..i download a buch of stuff to a folder (usually named the date and what the majority of the content is i.e. 04-28-07 female clothes) then when done downloading for the day right click on the folder and click 'install all' of course that doesn't sort them into sub-folders but hey, its quick. i really need to reorganize because my 'buy mode' folder is freakin huge and i guess i should further break it down. but then again, i'm lazy, and i prefer to talk about doing it as apposed to actually doing it :P

I tend to extract all files from all RARs/ZIPs onto the desktop and use the Clean Installer to put things into sub-folders.  I have very general sub-folders (Clothes, Lipstick, Genetics, Meshes, Binned, Unbinned, Unconnected, et cetera), because going too specific would bother me.

I only download Body Shop stuff and hacks, so my downloads folder is rather slim compared to most people's.  Just a little over a gigabyte right now.

I've only got 1.1gb and 3,300 files.  I don't go on huge downloading sprees, so it's not a big deal to unzip each file when I download it.  I used to sort by type, but now I sort by site and make sure that all the meshes I need for that sites set/outfit is included in the same folder.  Plus it makes it easier to tell which file came from where when creators don't put the hover text for an item or name the zip file with their site or other identifying name.

I have absolutely no problem scanning for orphans using Delphy's program.  Forgive the rather obvious suggestion, but are you all making sure to check the "show orphans" box once the scan has finished?  If so perhaps there is some other issue causing the problem that I seem to have (for once) not encountered.

I'm pretty sure I am, but I will try it again (making sure I do) and see what it does.

Sometimes the obvious is the answer. :D

EDIT: ChloroformDreams you may have been right and thanks so much for pointing that out!!! It does not "highlight" them but it did give me a list where I can delete.

I have on other question...

It says I have 448 "orphaned" files, but some of them look like files I use. Are these really "orphaned" files or is it maybe that my meshes may be in different folders. I mean it does check all folders right?

Apparently those orphan scanners are never 100% reliable. Rule of thumb - only delete whatever you know you can do without.

Me, I just delete everything it claims is an orphan and then see if I notice anything missing when I fire up the game.

Of course, I am not particularly attached to most of my downloads folder.

I haven't had any problems with orphan files not being orphan files.  To be safe, though, I move all orphan files to a folder on my desktop and fire up my game to be sure nothing is missing.  So far everything has been great.  I recently deleted a bunch of crap, and brought my downloads folder from 5500 files to 3100 files.  My game and bodyshop load in 2-3 minutes.  It's wonderful!  :D

Edited for punctuation mistake.

I dunno what's wrong....but i realized that if you add more things to your dl folder you gotta wipe the cache or whatever it's called out as it doesn't include it when it loads again....*sighs* at least it loads way faster than clean installer :D
