Post by: anniepie on 2006 November 07, 22:25:21
I found another file share site and that place is just confusing as all hell.  They say make a wishlist?  But wait you can't make a wishlist until you make so many posts.  Then they are like you can't see what we got, you have to beg??  And then they want a donation on top of all that WTF!

The best part, I ran across an announcement that said they need to raise their donation rates lol what a joke!

Am I confused or are they?

not worth it, too much trouble, what a pain in the ass!

No Thank You

OK I'm new and I'm sure there have been other things said about said site and it's old already but so what!  I want to bitch because I just found it and I think it sucks!  Stepping down now....

Yeah, I found it to be a pain in the neck also, but some people like it because it allows them to get specific files faster. Me, I find it too "social", too cliquey, too inefficient. Hence the "shut up and eat your files" method here.

Umm that's not true at all actually.

SFV is confusing if you let it be, if you don't read the stickies and whatnot.  But it's actually really easy, and they have a lot of procedures in place to help protect anonymity.  It's been around far longer than this site, back then anonymity was important.  ;)  Now it seems people don't care who knows they are filesharing.

But for the donations:  When you post enough (3 times), you have a new section of the board open up called The Sharing Corner (something like that).  You can then make a wishlist, and you list what you have to share, and what you'd like to get.  Eventually, after you are trusted to not be a spy, you can get access to the Treasure Chest area, and files there are more easily accessible, with files placed on third-party upload sites, and a thread is made for the file.

The donation section is completely optional, for people who want to have access to the files without asking or waiting.  After files are placed in the Treasure Chest, a mod gets them and puts them in the Donation section (often, there's at least a couple of weeks before this happens).  So donators can access this.  It's not necessary, and you don't gain access to different files at all.  It's just convenience.  I donated and I definitely don't regret it.

Oh they won't let you ask for a file right out. So no begging allowed. If you find someone with that file, then you can post in their wishlist thread, but no place else. No PMing with a request at all. No making a direct wish anywhere but in someones wishlist.

I tried the other place. Nice people, really, was a bit of fun until I had done so many things 'wrong' while trying desparately to go withthe flow, be nice, do my share, yada yada, I gave up.

This place is sooo much better. Direct, easy, play or don't play it's ok.

Well, you can make a direct request in your own wishlist.  People are pretty good about sending you stuff, and when I was active in the WL area (I'm not anymore, too many 12-year-olds wrecking it), we used to send entire sites out to some people.  So it's not a perfect system in the way you want (no muss, no fuss) but it's worked for a long time and I like it.

Bleh, seems like that's everywhere these days.

Maybe the Openhouse Jack blogs will scare them away from coming here. ;)

Yes, one can ask in one's own wishlist. BUT if the file isn't all that popular and not everyone has it, the wishlist gets buried and no one reads it and the wish goes unfilled.

I'm not saying I didn't like it some, cuz I did. But when I got 'corrected' about the tenth time for doing something different than everyone else did, I gave up.

The people were great tho. And I'm sure they did the best they could. But their system had some holes in it. I like this so much better.

For me, I went there, made the requisite few posts, got my wishlist, got the few files I had requested which I could not find here within 3 days, sent 2 things out to other people to return the favor and than I was out of there.
I found it really straight forward.
Here is definitely better, but I have to admit over there it's a little fun

Y'all can say what you like about SFV, but without that site, a lot of files on the Booty wouldn't be up and ready to go. Just sayin'.

Also, new shit comes out first on SFV, then PMBD. If I have new shit I want to share, I'm gonna share it first on SFV before I put it on PMBD. SFV has given me (and PMBD) tons of files, so why wouldn't I share it there first?

Title: ok i'm confused

I wholeheartedly agree with Surely.  And she's totally right.  I share with SFV first too.

Edit: Pooey, Blue talked about optional donation in a few posts before. Shoulda read first :P

But still, no dangly carrots, no witholding. Let's not get confused with the real paysites here.

Title: ok i'm confused
Post by: liegenschonheit on 2006 November 08, 08:03:02
If anything, the donation section over at SFV is like an archive service of older stuff for people who give a few bucks. You aren't getting anything special, you aren't even getting anything new. You get the new stuff way faster in the WL section than you ever would in the donation section alone, and anyone with more than three posts can have access to that.

But anyway, I concur with my esteemed colleagues. SFV is really the source of all this filesharing goodness, so like it or not, it deserves some consideration.

OK well  I guess I over reacted a little...

at first sight it was just rules rules rules.  There was just too much for me to take in and it was quite frustrating.  I took some more time to read through stuff (because this site was down :? ) and it's not all that bad I guess...the wishlist thig is just seems time consuming.

I admit that I am new to file sharring so I didn't get the whole secrecy thing at first.  I can't believe what slime bags the paysite owners are that they would be stalking people, that is just crazy!

anyway...thanks for the insight!

I've registred to SFV recently (to get some gossip... I'm addicted).

I don't have anything specific to ask. I'm actually trying to keep my downloads low. Moreover, I'm not playing the game until winter holidays.

I also prefer when you can simply lurk and steal pretty much everything. Fast and easy service. That's my kind of thing. :D

Title: ok i'm confused

SFV is for people who know what they want. I prefer to browse and find stuff that looks interesting. The lists on SFV tell me nothing about what it is.
Here, all files are centralized and I can easily go to a site and *see* for myself what is being shared instead of 1 or 2 items each from a zillion sites.
I have no idea what is out there.  In the past, if I saw a paypal button, I wouldnt even bother entering.
I haven't made a wishlist yet because all I could say in would be "Stuff".

It's definately you and if we suck then you don't have to join us there.

SFV has been sharing files for years before PMBD.  We have a different set up, because after years of being shut down and seeing other sites being shut down within the sim community we hacked out a system that worked for us and our members and until recently it was the only *sharing* system available and I am almost certain PMBD obtianed the majority of the files they offer to you through our crappy set up.

The reason we make you post 3 whole times to make you see the WL area was because we had spies just sifting the lists.  Our rules, rules, rules are for the protection of our members, because yes our sharing styles are different  - a style we haven't changed since PMBD opened a few months ago.  I can bet if you'd have stumbled upon us beforehand, our system would not have detered you.

We didn't think to purchase hosting in Kuala Lumpur, SIH simply purchased a server so we wouldn't have our hosting pulled out from underneath us.  How we share files and our donation system (unfortunately for us we don't have people stupid enough to donate $40 to our site) have all grown out of the history of what we know about filesharing.  Everything we have done, SIH has put into the site, alot of which she pocketed, was done just so simmers could have a place to share payfiles.  To me that will never "suck"

Further, if you spent a few minutes on the board you'd find a bunch of really kind people who love to help you out, and just about bend over backward to send you anything your heart desires, whereas here if you are looking for something in particular they send you to the SFV.  Hmmm

Thank you, Sherry, for posting that. The newbies hating on SFV was starting to grate on me, particularly because it's so fucking easy for them to say anything because all they have to do is click and download. They're not the ones who had to get the files up there in the first place. Of course they're not going to like anything else that wasn't "point and click."

Without SFV, there would be no PMBD, period. I don't even want to think how Pescado himself would get the huge amount of files we have up on the Booty. He can knock the way we share at SFV all he wants (and my goodness, how I hear about it!) but of course it's easy for him - he just has to sit there and have a bunch of us from SFV upload it for him. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that he had the balls to come up with a way for us to do it without repercussions, and I'm grateful for the server space too. But, like I said, the Booty had to come from somewhere, and he ain't the one who's shopping for it, or offering files out of his own pocket.

Precisely. SFV really has a special place in my heart, not only because of the fact that it was the first full scale forum I'd seen like it, but because the people there are just fantastic. I agree that the rules can seem somewhat overwhelming at first, but it is really simple once you get into the swing of things. Also, if you have any problems getting the hang of it, almost anyone over there would be willing to help you get settled in.

Yes, you do have to know what you want, and you are expected to repay by sharing what you recieve. The system works. Pescado is just old and has a long beard, and lacks in social graces. :P

i don't know what the guys who say sfv is confusing are talking about...i'm new to SFV (a week now) and to filesharing in general, and didn't find it confusing at all...of course, i took the time to read all the rules and stickys (by the way the first pm your receive from the staff is really helpful, once you've been through it you are ok). They even took the time to translate it in different languages!  I also find that people are really nice...and u get specific files faster then here (where not all the sites are hosted).
anyways thanks for making me discover SFV.. i believe it's a great site

I was really touched by the generosity and helpfulness there.
Within days people sent me everything I had asked for.
One person sent me a HUGE rar of practically everything from the TSR medieval theme. Some person who never met me spent twenty mins uploading a file of an ungodly size just because some stranger wanted it in their game.

Thank you Sherry Blue and Surely for putting it all nice and neat for me. Darn thoughts never come out that pretty.

All those things said though i also have to add on those rules and that safety thing. While it may not be all that important to some especially newer members who have not yet experienced it. The fact remains that while we have no problem with file sharing a good part of the community does.

All those pain in the ass rules came from experiences where at least one usually more then one member was banned from someplace or one member had their info shared between places.
That is why those things are like they are because SIH and the founders and older members took their experiences from sharing back in Sims one days and carried them through and used them to help so that Newer sharers would not be put through all the bull shit they went through.

Personally I have been there maybe 2 years and I have seen it go through a lot of changes trying to find a way that worked. So far this one has worked best.

I guess sometimes for some though it takes getting banned and having your info shared all over to see that angle of it where safety becomes a real concern and all.

BUT then many will never experience that cause they are simply here downloading while others are putting their info and identities on the line to get the files.
Especially now with this new found interest in sharing and the whole retail sims  drama pouring light on the subject and mroe pay site owners fearing they may lose a dime or two Now the crap will hit the fanm and believe me when I tell ya those asshats (thanks to whomever coined that phrase it is my new favorite) will stop at Nothing to protect their income. they will take to sending fake layer letters they will ban folks share info about folks sit and read these posts
Look at the lists of referrers to see if anyone comes from this site to theirs then take that IP and share it all over amongst them.
Believe me seen it and experienced it.

Anyone want to check out how long SIH and members have been fighting these morons.
A little history so to speak of the whole file sharing thing
Code:
http://p079.ezboard.com/bsimitemhunter

Check out the old board.
Some of the bigger named sites whining and groaning and threatening
Yet SIH and many of us are still here sharing passing on what they went through to help us get to this stage
so while it may not be perfect
It surely is working it has lasted this long
SFV will be 4 this year I think? and that is not counting the years they were on EZboard and yahoo etc

Oh and If you get there and need help All ya gotta do is ask.
Pm a mod
 PM me is ya want
Any one of the members there are always more then happy to lend a hand to help show folks around and get them started

Wee

I myself have donated to many many sites and so have some of the other people who upload here, but without SFV a lot of the smaller sites listed wouldn't be here.  Sherry, the other mods, and all of the people who had been there before me were all so helpful, and I love that forum.  When I left MATY to get a Pescado-break, I went to SFV.

Vive la SFV. :D

Lots of the stuff that is not yet on PMBD is because no one has put it up yet, not because they don't have it. :P  I had about 15 sites left before I stopped uploading.

Edit:  Wee, thanks for posting that link to the old board, I've been dying to read it.

My only problem with it is, you have to know what you want. Which is very much MY problem, as opposed to that of SFV itself...also I love the Giving Tree there, some really really nice, high-quality recolours there. It's a lovely community, really generous and kind, but at the same time not-ass licking...I think when I get my new PC, and actually DO download some files, I'll frequent it more...hehe...:D

Well, in my case, I didn't know what I wanted before I went.  However, I lurked in the Updates section, and in the Wishlist section, and found probably 50 sites I never knew existed, since I wasn't big into paysites and could only afford to donate to a few, so the few that got it were the more well-known ones.  I found and then wished for files based on that research.  But my ultimate goal wasn't to get stuff only for my game, but to also get it just to have it, and to share it with others.  So while I might have been really tempted to just say, "all", I knew I'd never get away with that. ;)

And you're right, we do have some really talented members there.

Yeah, sharing for the sake of sharing, I like, and think is made of key and win...:) Which is why I need to get me my better PC, a full 40gb and almost full 30gb secondary hard drive does not bode well for the hoarding/redistributing vibe >.<

You're right, those aren't the best circumstances for sharing.  I now have a 200GB hard drive, and no other downloading habits - I occasionally download movies to watch, but then I delete them.  I rarely download them either, it's more TV show seasons lol.  And I don't download music.  So my 200 GB is still 150? GB free.

Right. YOu have to know exactly what you want and all the names to go with.

I never pay for cc. I can't. I got some nice stuff at SFV. And I wanted to share that back with whomever I cuold. Only it seemed to me I always got there last - everyone already had what they wanted or I didn't have what they wanted.

Is that my fault? I don't think so. But I started feeling guiilty because of it. I kept reading posts where someone got their ass chewed because they weren't sharing back. I just couldn't take it. I felt guilty everytime I went there. So I went less and less until I just don't go anymore. :(

I hope I didn't sound like I was trashing SFV. But thanks for clearing much of the confusion that was being brought up.

You know, most people are probably saying bad stuff about sharers, but it's not like we're mean -- if we were, we wouldn't be sharing in the first place. Eventually, the greatest evils are the paysites owners.

Bottom line: hooray for sharing! It makes people happy.

As mods we don't get involved in something like that unless multiple members say something.  And we never step in unless the balance is completely tipped one way.  Like a member with over 200 request post and not sharing one item.

Thanks to everyone about the kind words at SFV.  I have no problem with PMBD, and I am not completely retarded, so I realise that people are going to probably prefer it to a method that requires you to do anything more than click a download link.

I do have to agree with coliss that for the most part there are no better people in this community than filesharers, and I think that is why I have such a soft spot for the SFV.  No where else will you find such generosity displayed, you see people donate for others, people send others entire sites, creators (talented creators) who will just on the drop of a dime fulfill a members request to have a hair this color or converted to this gender.

It is SVF that leads me here. I'm still figuring out how the system here works, so I cannot say which forum is more "complicated" in a fair tone    One thing I find is different is that SFV have lots of pinned rules that you can and should read, while here I see none so far. Those rules may be a bit headache to read but they surely are very helpful for new comers. I've been at SFV for a long time, so I know all those "complications" come out for some reason. To protect us from banned or out by those pay sites, and to help us share better. That's one of the major reason I stayed there.

Ah, this is just a come in, grab stuff, go away type of place, with nothing in the way of rules. It's all good. :)

Yeah, I think it's nice, at SFV, that although it can be complicated at first, as long as you read the stickies, which I make a policy of at a new forum anyway, it becomes very clear that those rules aren't there to be an arse, but to protect those who share there...

First thing I'm gonna say that I simply love SFV. That's the site that got me into file sharing.

Second thing, I have to admit that *it is* quite confusing and complicated, wich is one of the mainly reason I never joined there.
When a friend of mine found it, I had to translate her all the rules in order to get the pay files I wanted (http://www.simplystella.com/icons/asd.gif) and I gotta say they were very confusing (I guess part of the problem is my awful english, lol).

At one point the rules even changed into something even more complicated, if I remember right every wishlist couldn't have more then 5 or 15 request and it was forbidden to ask stuff to others, you just had to patiently wait till someone sent you the files.
Then finally, after some time my friend was accepted into a special group and she now have access to a sort of pay-files database, wich seems much simpler since she's not bothering me anymore (http://www.simplystella.com/icons/asd.gif)

Beside that, as I said above I love that site and the person who created it, whoever he/she is. Before run into PSMBD, that was my only way to get and share pay files, so, thank you. I mean it.

It's not a battle between SFV and PSMBD--both sites are worth going to, and whatever your preference, you're gonna get the booty either way.  8)

We seem to be missing some posts here, and I said this before the post got eaten, but I'll say it again:

"Abso-fucken-lutely."

I mean it.

They actually don't have that anymore.  You can request as much as you like.  And the rules aren't that confusing, they're there for privacy's sake.

I believe they were made to protect users privacy, especially for the sharers. I don't think they would change their rules just because is amusing XD.
But still, at one point they were really confusing, especially if english isn't your first language. I don't know about the new rules, I didn't know they were changed.
Don't get me wrong, I still think that SFV is a great idea for a site, as I said before - but I tend(and I like) to be painly honest when it comes to critiques

I agree. I too am very glad that SVF is there and hope they remain. They have their niche and so does PMBD. JM has a better idea, IMO. And to each their own.

Simplystella: your English fine! So much better than any of my 'other' languages. (I don't know any.) Be PROUD. very very proud.

I think the troll is suggesting some sort of play on words, like, fuck, I can't think of the example...

But I think it's trying to be clever and insulting and turning words around on themselves, I can't be sure.

So, you mean, Vulzard is actually helping hold the fibre of the universe together, by cryptically proving Rule 34?!

I love that little troll.

You don't need to make people post a certain number of times to find out who they are, even a "spy" can do that.  Just enable the email validation stuff in the sign-up.   Or you could do manual activation and make it dependant on them identifying themselves properly.

Pescado doesn't believe in email, he'd never do that.

Yeah I was talking about the other person's shared file collection who wants you to post 3 times.

I didn't think Pescado minded who looked at his collection.

Or if you meant he couldn't join up under those circumstances, then if the people are manually vallidating people they could respond to a request to join and validate the account without an email

Lol!  I am always amused by just how Pescado manages to get us all scurrying about accommodating him.  What a character! :)

Well it is his site, so if it should accommodate anyone I would think rightly it should be him.

Anyone with any hope of world domination needs charisma. I wonder how long he talks to himself in the mirror?

Whereas me, I just find the rules a laughable attempt at privacy, much like seatbelt laws are a laughable attempt at improving safety. I don't believe in seatbelt laws either. They're idiotic. People should be allowed to become road pizza. It serves as an object lesson to the others.

Ok why don't I just talk to myself as no one else seems to understand what I am saying   :(

Ah ok I think I see where I fucked up.  Not his site, the other site/s that make you post a certain number of times.
