Title: Another site goes free
Post by: Surelyfunke on 2006 November 05, 16:53:50
Aussie Topenders!

Quote

Hello Members,
Zita and Cathy would like to thank you all for your support of this
site.

Members who have purchased donation sets have helped this site meet
its bandwidth costs time and time again.

As a result, we are happy to announce that pay files will no longer be
needed in order to keep this site going!

Of course, it may be necessary to put up donation sets in the future,
but this is likely to be a very rare occurrence Smile

And so, thank you all for your support through this difficult time.
Zita, Cathy, and all of us here at Aussie TopEnders, are very grateful
for the assistance and kindness you have all given.

regards,
Savannah (Moderator Aussie TopEnders Yahoo Group)

I thought this was pretty awesome. It was received (not by me, sorry) via e-mail and not posted on their site.

Well that's just great and they had a little class about it too, unlike some.

They have to be the first site that hasn't gone crazy over this whole thing; they actually can afford to not charge for items any more unlike the rest.

If only everyone was this kind...

That is awesome.  I had donated to them in the past too.

they are really nice friendly people
i remember how kindly they treated people when they were just a yahoo group.

Unfortunately I have seen Zita land into people from a great height on her front page. There was some guy in Europe who was sharing her files on and she went nuts about it. So even though it's good they're not charging, they still would go off their nut about what's happening here..

It is good though that they're not doing an exercise in rampant greed and just charging because they can.. I know of some of the older pay/donation sites that are like that. They just ended up charging because they got into messes because they had the wrong host who charged them through the nose.

We have the right host (about 5 bucks a month) and have never been charging for our files as long as we've been in operation..

I was just confused about this being important because I know that there are lots of good free sites out there too including ours, so I've never seen it as that much of a big deal.

Well, it might be coincidence and just happened at the 'right' time, but they did indeed announce it with some class, rather than acting like by going free, they were some sort of hyper-generous gods, giving the community more than we deserve...good on them! :)

Just because this happened now doesn't mean that they did it because of this site.

Field reports suggest it hasn't actually HAPPENED yet.

Nope, Paypal buttons are still up on the site, and no mention of it anywhere on the site, or their forums. We wait :P

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: photo on 2006 November 06, 03:01:16
i'm sure it will take a while for them to get everything organized in a non paysite structure..... take down the paypal stuff (if they do at all, they might leave that up so that people can still donate) and all that

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: BlueSoup on 2006 November 06, 03:16:12
I don't think sites should not have a paypal button.  I don't believe they should be pay or donation sites, but I don't see anything wrong with accepting donations if people want to send them to you.  I have donated to Liegenschonheit's site twice, and I plan to continue to do so in the future.

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: samhainn on 2006 November 06, 10:03:15
I don't see anything wrong with voluntary donations either.. It's up to the person whether they want to donate or not. It's when they're made to donate to get the file that it gets questionable.

Title: Another site goes free

I don't see how speculating about whether or not two people sharing a handle are the same person is any sort of confidentiality issue.

Post by: Motoki on 2006 November 08, 01:45:00
Bah, I'll piss a lot of people off saying this, but when has that every stopped me?

Most of the people on this board are a bunch of pussies who want one foot in the goody goody happy bunny care bear world and still want want to get the *ooh scary bad* free pay files.

'But oh, they will ban me at the happy bunnies board if they know I come here'

To which I say why would someone want to be a member of a board where they would ban you for things you said or did outside their board?

I don't know, maybe I just don't get it because I don't give a hot fuck what people think about me and am not trying to impress anyone or get anyone to like me.

Post by: Ensign EO on 2006 November 08, 01:58:26
I agree with you, Motoki.  Part of it is just not wanting to get in trouble, and another part being the fact that most people cannot resist shiny free stuff and not wanting to admit to such wicked behaviour.

I feel no need to "come out" here, since I'm not really well-known on Sims forums, or even that active on them.  It'd be useless.  :P  I'm more of a lurker anyway.  I am a member of S2C and MTS2, and if they ever ban me for partaking in this and "finding me out", it won't stir much shit up with me.  I just keep my mouth shut on it over there because it's a waste of my energy, no one is ever going to be swayed, and it just makes me frustrated.  I argued in length one time with some people about whether using a person's content in pictures, movies, and stories without credit to the artist was plagiarism or some stupid shit like that and that was the last time I ever bothered to express my opinion there.

Also, perhaps some of the people who don't want to be banned for their behaviour may simply not want to lose ties with their forum buddies (yay cliques), or to start a new forum life elsewhere and find a new clique.

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: Motoki on 2006 November 08, 02:48:19
Oh yes, I am sure there are cliques and reputations involved.

Seems like not being much better than Lyric Lee who tried to portay one image elsewhere and then the reality was she was actually downloading shit on here.

And I agree about it being mostly a waste of time to argue with fools on the other boards, I gave several of them more than my two cents in my day, but ultimately I don't bother any more. No real point. I just don't post at those places anymore.

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: Solowren on 2006 November 08, 02:57:06
I really wouldn't care if I got banned from the other boards: I too am mainly a lurker anyway. I'd lose no sleep over it, that's for sure.

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: liegenschonheit on 2006 November 08, 03:21:57
I was a bit afraid at one point of being ostracised from 'polite' sim society, but I let pescado pressure me into using my 'real' name here with the promise of a neato piraty title. Now that I have I realize that really, nothing has changed. Just about everyone I give a shit about knows exactly where I stand, and not one of them was shocked or distressed. I don't hang out at any of those fluffy bunny funbear sites Motoki mentioned, and they can kiss my ass anyway for being dipshits and banning members for things that have nothing to do with their sites.

When all is said and done, I'm pretty well pleased with my decision.

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: Nothlyn on 2006 November 08, 03:29:38
Not like I'm post-whoring it up here but I'll admit to being one of those "pussies" I don't post on MTS2 and haven't done so in a long time because I just don't like the vibe I get from there, however I didn't want some trigger happy admin/mod to ban me for what I may do in the sims community (but away from their board) that's just ridiculous... since I still go there to get downloads and I didn't want to shoot myself in the foot.

though I doubt I'd be a target anyway since I don't post there, unless they'd go through the members list looking for "thieves".  :P

Title: Another site goes free
Post by: klapaucius on 2006 November 08, 03:30:26
I agree - I don't see the point in hiding under a different name here. The name I use here is the same one I have for other Sim sites as well. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? If a site decides to ban a member for being here, then it's no big deal. The earth will still keep turning. It's not like anyone's going to come round and shoot my dog, for chrissakes.

The stuff here is not shiny, it is merely free. The shiny stuff elsewhere is always free.

Edited to make me appear more Awsome than I am.

Delphy don't give a rat's ass what drama ensues on another forum, as long as you don't screw up his and abide by his rules while you are on his forum. Sounds like a good fair deal to me. And yes, I heard this first hand.

My only issue is loosing access to meshes and the like, or upsetting the creators I have on my site. While I am ready to go loud and proud, other creators on my site are a little more introverted. I use a different nic here out of respect to them, rather than to the offending pay sites.

You know, when I saw peoples names I recognised here, I thought it was great that they weren't afraid to compromise themselves in any way.

I don't belong to that many sites but those sites I do belong to, can ban me if they so choose, no skin off my nose.  If we all stuck to our regular names, I think these sites would quickly find out that they are banning a huge proportion of the community and where would that leave them? I won't be changing my user name (even if it is crap), no siree.

I registered my known name as well. I happen to belong to several sites including happy bunny love ones (tho much that goes around some of them ain't happy or remotely bunny love-like, but meh) and well if they ban me for REGISTERING an account on a different site well...I don't need to be part of such a site anyways...

I don't any "reputation" whatsoever in the Sims 2 community, so I don't care. And if I wanted to "hide", I wouldn't register an account here.

It's fun to know who is who though!

Yep SimsFileVault Since the board had orginally been started on EZboard almost 4 years ago, I think alot of the name had to do with the fact that SIH (board owner) knew the sim community was going to try to hide our existance and she wanted a name that would be easily searchable for a simmer.

I'm most of a lurker, and usually I don't post very much anyway, but I have to say that IMO the biggest worth of this site is not so much the booty as the public exposure of the problem.

And this is absolutely great!

I didn't pay too much attention to the fact that paysites are legally wrong, and probabily some paysites owners weren't fully aware about this matter. But now they can't say they don't know, or don't mind: now they have to fully think about it, and are requested to take sides.

I think paysites owners that manage to understand, and reconsider the issue are people deserving of all respect, even if in the end they don't agree. It's their own personal opinion, after all.
But screaming hysterical harpies no, please not at all!  :)

That's not the same as Sims Vault is it? Because that is where LyricLee is moderating these days.

Bahahaha...heh... Okay, I think I'm done. Wait, nope...heheheh.

Okay. I'm done, for real.

Nope, they are not even remotely the same. As far as I know, SFV was around before Sims Vault ever started. In fact, Exnem, the owner of that site, has been trying unsucessfully to get SFV closed down for ages. The idea that they could be the same, despite simmilar names, is just funny.

LyricLee's folder. That is quite evil.

There's so many stuff on the booty that I just don't bother looking at most of the stuff. It keeps my Downloads folder happy though.
