Lucy, I was told that that error means you're trying to add an image from an outside source?
I was trying to post a gift there and got that and Pas told me that's why.
Hope that helps, if not...well, hell, I tried.

I'm sorry for dragging up an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one about the same subject. Is anyone else having problems accessing the SFV site? I can't even get the front page to load.

Title: SFV
Post by: Duckie on 2007 November 13, 23:14:00
It's been down all day. It keeps timing out.

Title: SFV
Post by: Requip on 2007 November 14, 00:06:34
I'm so glad you said "timing out". That's been happening to me for months now, it's so slow. Doesn't matter if I use Firefox or IE, both either take 15 minutes to load one page or it just times out and won't open at all.  :x

Title: SFV
Post by: Duckie on 2007 November 14, 00:20:11
Yup, that's what it does for me now. When I can get on the site pages still time out. I'll be browsing the site and click on a thread link and it'll.... hang.... and hang.... and hang.... 10 min to load a thread is ridiculous and often times it just plain times out. So I have taken to opening threads in tabs from the "View New Posts" page. Even that doesn't always work. Half the tabs time out and the other half only load after a looooooooooooooooooong time. It's very annoying. I don't have an hour (literally) to sit and wait for the pages to load.

Title: SFV
Post by: Dachs or puppy-girl on 2007 November 14, 00:27:15
I use aol explorer and I have cable internet and it only takes a minute or so to load for me. I do notice it is one of the slowest sites for me as well. Also the site is down right now as I just tried myself to go onto SFV.

Post by: zarah on 2007 November 14, 00:55:11
yah, she knows, she's fixed it before so hopefully she can fix it again.  it literally took me all last night to update my busted duggshare (wtf has happened to them?!) links.  i got about 1/3 of them done and had to give up so i could get some sleep, gah.

Title: SFV
Post by: Charlotte on 2007 November 14, 01:01:55
I hope that's what they're fixing now, it won't load at all, within a few seconds I get a problem loading page .. err... page.  Mine has been going on for months as well, sometimes I just don't bother, I've even resorted to spamming the PVP boards with the locals *gasps*

OK what is wrong with AOL explorer Ducky? I know that foxfire is suppose to be the best. I did not care for it too much. The new IE7 sucks monkey butt as you cannot see all the banners on my top 100 dachshund breeder/sites of distinction. I need to be able to manage that and I cannot if I cant see all the banners.  :)

Title: SFV
Post by: Ensign EO on 2007 November 14, 04:42:40
I don't care much about what browser I use either, but I mostly use FurryFox because I succumb to pressure easily.  (I used to use IE, but I switched to appease my Canadian; he hasn't said much about browsers since the switch, so I assume this means I win.)  I've heard good things about most browsers--Opera is sleek and quick, FurryFox has a lot of addons, and... whatever.

But obviously the AOL Explorer sucks because... it's AOL.    Do you really need a reason?

Well it has something to do with alot of fun, games and prizes coming to the forum very soon!

It's not that I don't want to say here, but I don't want to burden PMBD with a whole discussion about something SFV specific and kinda irrelevant to sharing.  Let's hope the site is up soon.   I didn't realize it was down until, well that last post.  I'll post if I hear anything about the site being down, unless it comes back up (crosses fingers).

SIH is aware of the issues and after the new year plans to rehaul the whole forum.  She is busy right now, and well to be honest she was all ready to go and close up the forum so we could work on it or even move it but Pas and I asked to her wait until the new year.  It would have meant we wouldn't have been able to do the advent calendar and games section and well we really wanted to be with you all at christmas time.  She is taking care of it though, and we do apologize for the lag.

Oh, dear lord, are they trying to run a site on WINDOZE?!? No wonder the place is a shambles. WINDOZE IS NOT FOR SERVERS! No doubt the horrific lack of a useable online interface turns what would be a 5-second automated task with a Perl script into a multi-hour nightmare. SAY NO TO WINDOZE SERVERS! Let's not forget that even running Windoze means you can say goodbye to half your system resources. A necessary evil, perhaps, for games, but completely unnecessary for a server.

I've seen this error before, it's called PEBCAM-Error. Try to follow the instructions in that window. If it doesn't help, I advise you to contact a computer technician near your place and tell him, that you have a serious ccase of occasionally appearing PEBCAM-Errors on your machine. Oh, have I missed you all. I've been away too long to cope; that's what I love about reunions!

RYCUSHIE! Blankie iz heyr. Iz ok. Will be good nao. *snuggle*

Oh, alright, Niamhie. 300 posts. But that's still a lot! It'll take me ages to regain that. ;) But hey, I still beat Gramps--that counts for something, ne?

Lily, you BEAT me?! That is...but, Lily!!! That is a very good postcount though, I'm impressed.

Paaaaaadeeeeeeen!!!!!! *glomp* I have been...er, sailing. For a long time. *nodnod* Naw, I just needed a break...but it's amazing what being back for 30 mins can do to your head. ;) I'm immersed in the Peggyzonetwat thread already. ^^ The poor Carla thread has run away from me--it was on p105 or something like that the last time I read it...

Alice (purdy name, I've always thought Alice is a pretty name): LOL, it's definitely the Love Boat Pirate Ship to Candy Mountain. I haven't been here for three months, cut them a li'l smidge of slack. ^^ ;)

Quote from: "calalily"
In fact, you were a memorable moment with your casual and causal taunting of Pescado.

I'm quoting that because it is so awesome, and completely true. I will forever taunt him; Gramps knows he loves it (he just won't admit it).

TCHANATTACK.

I would say, if your Mercedes broke down, you wouldn't call Ford for repairs.

Or with other words: Ask the site owner. They are more likely to know than us.

Perhaps you can post at the old EZ-Board, it's still active and used for news every now and then:
http://p094.ezboard.com/bsimitemhunter

If you post there there might be a chance that SIH reads it... Or you can wait until one of the mods reads here and answers your questions. Sherry, rds and Pas are all members here.

How often do you have to be told it will be up when it's up?  Just shut the fuck up about "when will it be up" - just fucking wait.  It will be up when it's up, regardless of how many times you spam it up asking when it will be up.

Also SFV doesn't do "shopping" or "wish" lists anymore. There are usually link that you just download from =] Except the TSR section. That has special rules.

And, uh, what's up with your location? Wow.  =.=

Heh. I play The Sims 2 off and on. This is about the third 'on' cycle for me in a row in which SFV has been down. I always hear about it, but have never even seen what the site looks like.

(Not complaining--I don't even know what's there, so I have nothing to complain about. It's just a funny coincidence. For a given value of 'funny'.)

SFV is a large forum with lots to fix there. SIH is doing what she can and if you think it ain't fast enough for you then that shows you're nothing but an impatient 12 year old.

kinky boots...

... what's the point in antagonizing this board?

You just keep pushing and pushing and pushing and basically forcing people to be rude to you. What? You think that's cool?

Think again.

We are not the SFV help board in here. We already told you what we know. Why the f*** would we care to run your little online errands for you? If you can't get in, chances are that we can't either. Wait a few days and try again. If you don't like their services you have two options a) stop going there or b) donate the moolah for them to hire several professionals to get it all up just for you.

It really is that simple.

As for your location: It is not funny. It is not sexy. It is crude and disgusting and quite a few people already told you so. You don't think it's a big deal? Then why not for the love of booty just change it instead of keeping up this juvenile behavior?

You feel attacked by people? Well, you inspire these attacks. If you took a step back, you might be able to see that for yourself. There is no shame in apologizing for past behavior and mending your ways. I may not be very active around here anymore, but in my experience, people are given second chances. If you don't want to do that, then please just stop posting and disappear into the mist of past trolls and incurable noobs.

Thank you.

I wanted to let you all know that I just paid to get a new board program. I will be converting the phpBB form over to the Invision one. It runs smoother, I get less headaches and I am tired of all the issues with phpBB. With the Invision board, I'll get support, and we can do much more with it. Not only did I get the board, but I got the download manager package too. So We can share easier.

I am currently waiting on them to review the purchase, and then I will work on getting the stuff moved over. I PLAN to have everything moved over to the new forum so we won't lose anything (Hopefully) I did pay them to do that as well. So please be patient with me, and I'll get this board going again REAL soon and in better shape.

Thank you to those that have stuck around and helped out!! This $249.99 price was my christmas present to you all !! Merry Christmas....

:) I do hope SFV sorts itself out, it seems whenever they go down for maintenance, when they come back up they are slower  :?

However, those people in that time zone have to eat, sleep, go to school or work (8 hours for sleeping, and 8 hours for work leaves only 8 hours for catering to the needs of SFV visitors.) so give them a break, why doncha?

I know I was the one that got quoted, so I hope you're not accusing me of becoming impatient with SFV (since that is by far not the case, I totally understand that SIH has her family as well as a full-time to take care off) - I was only pointing out that the amount of time SFV has been down doesn't differ to what country you're in.

Holy moly this thread exploded since I came here last.  So you all know what's up- I'm late, sorry :|

I'm real excited for the new better FASTER forum.  Initially, SIH said something about having to erase everything *throws self into bottomless pit* but this is much... MUCH better.  It's really nice of her to spend her money to do this.. a lot of money to do this.  Couldn't of been better timing because of her RL, though.  She's going to have a lot on her plate come the next month...  :(  So if ya can help, please do brcause we'll probably need it.

You all are real sweet.  Thanks for not being like 'BLAARRRRG takes forever BLAAARRG' and when people have come in here saying that, there's a round of "STFU's."  SFV has the best members ever.  Love yas- MWAH!

LOL thanks for the warning of kinkyboots.  Maybe she'll lurk?  Seems to only be a problem when she talks.  Hah, I prob shouldn't say that :\ harhar

If you all have questions, or wanna talk 'cause I'm bored out of my mind today... Yahoo! Messenger is uncfanone
Also, if it goes down after the new server, you can send me a message I can call SIH and bug her at work...

I typically have it on ^ and don't make me regret posting that

Post by: rds on 2008 January 14, 17:12:52
Aha, no not new rules really, just some things translate differently in the new forum. Like live links are easier to handle in this new forum.  I don't think it will let you post if you try to post a live link  8)

Anyway, a few of the much older topics are being deleted because they are beyond repair and/or just really old ;)  Other than that, the topics are there!  There was a problem with the image codes, and we are going through editing ...every... single picture in Creations and Downloads.  We are making headway, believe it or not!  All the links in TSR are being deleted.  Not topics, just the 3rd party host links that shouldn't be in there anymore due to the new system.  Most of them were dead anyway, we want people to really use TSR the new way.  Once you all get in there you'll probably have to edit signatures and upload your avatars again.  We're working on getting the Thanks block in. Umm.. I think that's it!

Anyway, I gotta get back there.  We're still on track to open on the 16th ;)

Just sayin'.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Dr House on 2008 February 25, 16:27:39
Hecubus, rds talked about"some things need to get sorted out", it doesn't makes me think of server problems but intern ones. I really hope not though, that's how SMB imploded (but it wasn't such a loss as SFV would be! :(). Maybe she was talking about the remnant of the old forum clogging their server and their files.
If it's nevertheless a server problem maybe someone could host them. Delphy or Pes?

Title: Re: SFV

Hecubus, rds talked about"some things need to get sorted out", it doesn't makes me think of server problems but intern ones.

Yes, but this is the reason why:

Oh, dear lord, are they trying to run a site on WINDOZE?!? No wonder the place is a shambles. WINDOZE IS NOT FOR SERVERS! No doubt the horrific lack of a useable online interface turns what would be a 5-second automated task with a Perl script into a multi-hour nightmare. SAY NO TO WINDOZE SERVERS! Let's not forget that even running Windoze means you can say goodbye to half your system resources. A necessary evil, perhaps, for games, but completely unnecessary for a server.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Dr House on 2008 February 25, 17:23:06
Aaaaaaaaaaah! *reliefed*
A clogged server is way more preferable than staff and member implosion. Hope they quickly change their awkward system.

lol you caught me cala, i haven't read the first pages as they were way too old, my bad and i make amend. :D (i prefer to read fights than praise topics, moar fun)

Title: Re: SFV

Don't worry about it - I mean, I have been reading this forum everyday for over a year - if I don't know it, then I deserve to be keelhauled.  ;D When you've been here a year, you will be the Grand Master of all-things-PMBD too.  ;D

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Dr House on 2008 February 25, 18:08:20
Then i'm ashamed since i've been reading this forum since the 'big migration' - when the server was bought. Can't remember when it happened, maybe a year or two (was it feb 2006?? or summer? or 2007? lol) but i tend to read war topics or paysite-owner-comes-moaning ones way more and missed that SFV one...  :-X

I don't think Pes would be willing to host SFV. After all, most of the members there are very nice and therefore there isn't enough MOAR FIGHT for him.  ;)

Wow, what a shock. SFV is down again. I think SIH needs a different server and a different server OS.

nope, nope. Has absolutely nothing to do w/ the server.  The server is fine, the server is fantastic.  Nothing will be lost, it'll just pop up again near the end of the month.

I've been here for a year and three days and still don't count myself an expert on some things. I post, interact with other members and come away knowing more than I did than when I got here. Hopefully, I also entertain some of you, as well. Always was the class clown when I felt like it...

I know i have a really crappy memory lol, the hardest classes in schooll were always the history and geography ones... All these dates, gosh that should be forbidden ;D
Everytime i read stuff here i learn new things, or just have a good laugh, love this place :D
Yep, Pes hosting SFV is not really a good idea. The changes he would impose to accept them would be too much ("You all take a bazooka now, the last one alive wins!")

This is the 1st time this problem has arisen.  I called SIH and she's still working on it.  I do hope it's up soon, it's out of my hands of course but I will try to keep you all updated.  I'm sorry I said end of month and it still isn't done.  Please just be patient, that's all I ask.

nope, nope. Has absolutely nothing to do w/ the server.  The server is fine, the server is fantastic.  Nothing will be lost, it'll just pop up again near the end of the month.

Just curious

If it isn't the server it has to be financial or maybe admin/mod problems?

if the server is fine, why is the site unreachable unless she intentionally took it down?
she just paid a shitload of money to move to that..crap board..i mean ipboard  :D so if it was a forum issue, all she'd have to do is contact them and say 'halp site down' and they'd fix it.
I wonder if her godaddy hosting couldnt handle the new board software?
does anyone know whats really going on? :-\

there's no big drama or tech details to ponder over; sfv will be back when it's back, that's all there is to tell.  yes, it's frustrating that it's been down for so long because it's a social board, almost more than it's a sharing board... if you see some of your sfv friends here or on other boards start pming them and hang out with them in other places for the time being.  if anyone is getting hinky because they aren't getting their downloads fast enough (pmbd is a fair bit slower, yep) then those folks need to just chill the eff out, it's only pixels; you'll survive.  withdrawal's a bitch tho' innit?  :D

I *think* I agree with the gist of what you are trying to say here. However, try capitalizing the letters at the beginning of sentences - it makes reading your writing a bit easier for the rest of us.  ;)

No offense to those who are having difficulty dealing with SFV being down, (because I would certainly be bummed if PMBD was down for any extended length of time) however, continually whining about it every single day on some other board certainly isn't going to bring it back any sooner. Sheesh, get out and enjoy the sunshine (or whatever) read some other boards and learn something new, etc. Bottom line - put your big girl/boy panties on and stop whining about it.

there isn't anything to agree or disagree with.  this is factoidal - all speculation is useless, and it will be back when it's back.

If people want to speculate about something, no matter if you think it's useless, you think you can stop them at a board you don't own? If people want to talk, they will talk. Just saying to avoid some 'dissapointments' on your end. lol.

SS - I have a t-shirt that says "Oh, put your big girl panties on and deal with it"  ;D

Zarah, when you have someone who is agreeing with you, it's really not good form to be a smartass.  Though we don't police grammar here, it would be nice if you would attempt to use proper capitalization.  I think SS was trying to be helpful and she did it in a very nice way.  However, we have had no problem with those who are more frequent posters at SFV, posting here.  Most of you I know pretty well anyway and am glad to see you posting here.  I'm sure whatever the problem is, it will be resolved and I know rds, she's very reliable with providing information as she receives it.

While SFV is down, you'll find that we are a pretty welcoming group.  Join in and enjoy.  We're glad to have you.

Agreed here as well!  I missed PMBD when I was busy with RL last month, but I missed the forum, not the downloads.  I've heard this before and I know now it's true--once you have unlimited access to something you thought you couldn't live without, you discover that you really could live without it, and actually live much happier.  My DL folder is 80-85% free stuff now, and I enjoy the game much more because the quality of the things I have there are so much better.

Zarah, please understand that I do appreciate what you are saying, I was also trying to prevent a "pile on" here which I assure you is much worse.  I believe that happened over the whole Jan, Main St. Sims issue when I posted her personal info because I was asked to do so.  I took FULL blame and accountability for it, pmed SIH and apologized as well.  That was something I shouldn't have done, I admitted I was wrong and removed the info immediately.  However, throwing that in my face (which is exactly how your comments made me feel) after many, many months ago was completely uncalled for IMO.  I was attempting to help you.  The members here are much more blunt and to the point.  If you found offense in what I posted, that was not my intention.  I'm glad to see you here, as I am the other members of SFV, as I am a member there as well.  I was only suggesting that you take comments/suggestions in the spirit they are given.  Not everyone here is familiar with a lot of members from SFV.

Ok I'm with AW on this one. That was uncalled for. You think just because AW says something everybody is just going to stop saying what they feel? Everybody here realizes that we all have different opinions and will state them. You may have helped to stop the "pile on" at SFV, and I'm sure AW thanks you, but for you to come here and think that you can say what you want and have people not respond. Uh oh on your part. I realize SFV is down and maybe you are stressed but realize where you are.  :D Pirates with opinions tend to state them no matter what is said.

I have been reading this with interest, and while I do find it slightly annoying that people continue to speculate, they can in fact speculate, and I'm not going to try to be the boss of them.  Speculation in one thread is far, far better than the tards that start a new thread saying omg where can i get a file u don't care about with my lack of punctuation so it is a pain in the arse to read.

But really, I so have to point out the piratey way to some of you fluffy little SFVers, since you'll be here for time indeterminate.

Note these lessons, they will serve you well.

there isn't anything to agree or disagree with.

There is always something to agree or disagree with.  Watch fellow pirates come in here and disagree with that statement.  Pescado lives for discord and disagreement - you don't want to starve the poor creature, now do you?

I think everyone needs to chill, theres no point in arguing

Starvation of Pescado is a whippable offence on this ship - see above.  No one here has learnt to "chill" - they merely idle at a low level of outrage, ready for the next big outrage - they are in a constant state of catlike readiness to macro you into next year and disagree with every bloody statement you make.

I await those pirates who will reply to this thread with "I am sweetness and light and never disagree with you" hereby *proving* that MOAR FIGHT lives here.  :D

Heck, the reason I come here is because this place is so refreshing from all the other forums that do nothing but preach sweetness and light and blue skies and fluffy clouds and peace on earth throughout the Sims community.  If you don't ever disagree with anyone, wouldn't life just be a boring monotony of nothingness?

Welcome SFV refugees, but be warned--we are a bit straightforward and occasionally caustic in our opinions.  If you can't take criticism or the occasional disagreement with your postings, then you may not find this place to be entirely to your liking.  But enjoy the cookies and rum.  Those are always free :)

No one here is sweetness and light but pirates are generally disagreeable little bastards - and would disagree on principle.  For example, I disagree with your statement:

Missangelica, I think you may have taken that a bit more seriously than it was intended. She was making reference to that "heavy metal has demonic messages" crap from the 80s, and was only trying to lightly tease you, hence the usage of the word "ebil". It may not have been clear, but I don't think it was meant as a harsh or direct insult.

She definitely meant it in jest, missangelica. No insult was implied in the original comment, even with the inclusion of the word "bitch". Calalily called me a "horsefucker" once, although in her case I knew she meant it ;D, but I still couldn't take it seriously. Generally, it's better to assume less malice than more, I think, especially given the very high levels of sarcasm around these parts. ;)

You didn't take it seriously?! Now I know you are indeed a greasy, greasy horsefucker.  :D

Miss A, I know SmilingS. from other forums.  She has a quacky whacky sense of humor.  She doesn't mean anything by it, promise.  I posted something recently on a board and was absolutely teasing.  Unfortunately, my sense of humor didn't carry off in my post as I would have liked and thanks to a very close friend, she let me know that I might want to add/edit because she "gets" my funky humor, but someone else didn't.  Meh, it happens.  We are all guilty of it at one time or another.  Everyone has been accused at times of coming off in a way that wasn't intended.  I laughed when I read it because I knew she didn't mean it in a mean-spirited way.  Sometimes you have to look beyond the words and at the intentions of the poster.  I have always gotten along pretty well with you and think you have a funny sense of humor.  I believe she was just joining in the fun.  If I thought she meant it as a slam, I would have said something.  *Gives special cookies to Miss A*

It's very easy to get the wrong impression on the boards

I make fun of everyone. With a big grin and a pitchfork.
I love stirring up people.

But I don't MEAN it. Why would I?
I don't hate anyone aside from Chaz. And that includes IRL.
God help Chaz if I ever see him/her/it walking down the street.
I'd be able to tell it's them by their shiny zombied face.

I'm totally confused by this.  Tchan is known as "little bitch", not me.  My username spelled backward doesn't say bitch either.

Hon, it's a reference to the back-masking crap that began in the sixties and seventies, when bands would play a tape loop backwards and record it. Like in Revolution Number Nine by the Beatles, supposedly there were clues in certain sections that you had to play backwards on your turntable to hear them pointing to the fact that Paul McCartney was dead. It was all bullshit for the most part and ruined many an expensive piece of vinyl recording medium! I really don't think any offense was meant by it and as you were not a child of that era, the reference may have caught you off-guard. Hell, she easily could have chosen me for that statement! Of course, in my case it would have been true.

Sweet zombie jesus!

First off, I apologize if my joke hurt your feelings as that certainly was not my intent.  :-\

Secondly, to try and explain this from my perspective so that you are not quite so confused. As most everyone here has  so eloquently explained, my jest was based on the old stories of playing rock music backwards and hearing demonic references. In your original post, which is what I responded to and started all this, you pointed out that your name contained "Angel." Well the opposite, ie playing it backwards, would result in a demonic type message, which is totally not true just like hearing the demonic messages coming from playing the music backwards was untrue. It merely was a play on the hysteria that was prevalent back then.

And lastly, again, it was in no way a personal attack against you.

Hell, she easily could have chosen me for that statement! Of course, in my case it would have been true.

Heck it could have been anyone and with the same results. It was just easier with MsA because her name contains the word "Angel." I certainly didn't realize she would take it so personally.

You just reminded me of this one joke-story.

A journalist is interveiwing a small towns oldest resident, a 108 year old man.

She asks him "Whats your secret?"

to which he replies "I never argue with anyone."

She scoffs, "That cant be true!"

He smiles benignly "I guess youre right".

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: rds on 2008 March 15, 19:34:42
I DO have an update, but it's not what I would like but it's pretty necessary that I get this out...

I talked to SIH and she has okayed that I start accepting donations in order to get the forum back up and running.  Yes, the reason that it is down is completely monetary.  We stopped taking donations in the past because Paypal is a horrible company and because of Thomas's finger pointing and false accusations Paypal STILL has the donated money from over a year ago.  Must be great to be a company that can steal money from people and get away with it huh??

Anyway, I think I have a solution.  So, if you are willing and able to contribute anything monetarily please please please PM me and I will give you more info.  I probably won't take donations until I know exactly where they go, and get all that cleared up.  So it will be a pledge more or less and I will stop taking pledges when the amount is met.  Once everything is clear w/ SIH I will give the money to her and get the forum back up and running ASAP.

I'm sorry it's led to this.  RL has thrown some nasty twists I hope you all understand and hope you know that we love our members and hate asking such a favor of you when you already spend money on sharing items with everyone  :-[

This is going to sound very rude: Nice to hear that after 2 months of not being deemed worthy of knowing what is going on, you're still not telling us exactly what you need. I don't mind if you don't want to tell all those weird pirates over here, but what about your regulars?
The worst way of getting help(donations) is not telling people what help you need, every detail. (And telling them before all this, they 'don't need to know' what's going on.)

The worst way of getting help(donations) is not telling people what help you need, every detail. (And telling them before all this, they 'don't need to know' what's going on.)

The explanation to that is very simple and -I'm hoping- easy to understand.  I was not able nor willing to tell people that SFV needed donations without being completely sure that SIH wanted to accept donations.
I hope that you will respect the fact that I will not aire other people's business as though it were my own.  That includes SIH's bank account.
I did not know then that we would even ask for donations.  SIH told me she would have to check and make sure she had money to feed her family before she put more money into the forum.  So, the very second I talked to SIH and found out I could ask for donations I got on here and am now asking for help.  Thus, you didn't need to know because there was nothing to report.
I did, btw, tell a few SFV members via PM why the forum was not up.  I appreciate them and the fact that they did not tell others before I was completely ready to explain the situation.  I would not leave our members in the dark, please realize this.

Thank you for those who sent me PMs.  I will get back to you tonight, I have a meeting w/ fellow army wives and hope to get back at a decent hour.  LOVE YOU GUYS!  :-*  If you want to know more details, PM me.  I will be letting the donators know more info, but to be honest the things that I'm not sharing are not set in stone and I will not tell you things without being 100% sure!

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Anouk on 2008 March 15, 21:40:12
I understand your explanation. Personally I wouldn't even think about a site if I had trouble feeding my family. Screw that site, I want my potatoes! :-X  So I get it!
It's cool she wants to pay for the site herself, but there's huge amounts of people that can miss 5 bucks in stead of her having to pay hundreds(?) each month. This community is very willing to help a site like SFV. Maybe SFV is just too big for one or two people to finance.  So maybe move the donation thing to a monthly thing? If not through paypal, maybe through something else like money orders or credit card payments? Or is that what you're doing.

Also: why not tell us how much money you need and we'll know what amount we are going after? Maybe even a donation meter? If you share more info you will get more help, because people will have a goal to donate to.

Plus: Use the exchange rate thing and get donators from Europe. *evil laugh*  ;D

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Yaardarm Monkey II on 2008 March 15, 21:41:22
???   I really dont understand this.

- since PMBD deals with the same type of files, wouldnt it make more sense to have them all in one place?

- the statements that: "Paypal is a horrible company and because of Thomas's finger pointing and false accusations" and "SIH told me she would have to check and make sure she had money to feed her family before she put more money into the forum."
are moot if the files are moved to this place since (a) Pescado doesnt ask for donations to pay for this place and (b) nobodies family starves or has to deal with Paypal or Thomass

- it seems a number of SIH people are here anyway, so why 'reinvent the wheel' so to speak

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Anouk on 2008 March 15, 21:46:44
True, true. Besides having SIH paying for very expensive forum software (in my eyes everything above 50 is expensive lol), why not use SMF and get free file hosting with Pes? Maybe you can work something out that is much more efficient and much much cheaper.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Charlotte on 2008 March 15, 21:54:29
Well, it doesn't really need filehosting since most of the files are hosted by mediafire, divshare etc  And also, I hope I don't offend, I find it a lot easier to talk over at SFV than here - I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.  It's not really about the filesharing, most of us are missing the actual community.  I'd like to help out rds, but things are tight with unexpected costs coming up, I won't be able to donate anything until next month :)

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: euterpe on 2008 March 15, 22:09:56
I see--so it's the forum costs we're being asked to help subsidize.  I had no idea it was so expensive to run a forum (seriously--I'm not being sarcastic).  In that case, would it be possible to set up a separate forum area here for the SFV people to use, and let the members keep their files on mediafire, etc.?

Again, I'm not very familiar with SFV, so I'm just trying to get a handle on what sort of help could be provided here to expedite getting the site back up.  Money is certainly an issue here in the U.S., with the price of gas (and everything else) climbing higher all the time.  If we can figure out some way to do this that doesn't involve actual financial expenditures, that certainly seems to me to be a more logical solution.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: ws-jessica on 2008 March 15, 22:40:47
ok, im confused and probably will sound like a bitch lol

is she wanting donations to help her continue to pay for the bloated, unnecessarily expensive forum software she just switched to (and wasted hundreds of dollars on)
or is she wanting donations to help her pay for her hosting with godaddy (or to upgrade it to handle the new forum software)

Like nouk was saying, it seems a bit shady. For two months, all everyone hears is "i dont know whats going on, shes been busy, blah blah blah" now suddenly she needs money, but is asking through you and not posting here herself or explaining what SFV needs donations for.

If its for the forum software, all she has to do is disable it and put up a webpage explaining wtf is going on.
Also, just because phpbb didnt float SFV's boat, doesnt mean other free forum software wont. SMF does everything that ipboard does, and can be modified easily, you dont need to pay hundreds of dollars for a geek to hold your hand with it or install it for you. I dont even know why she moved there. You guys can do the requesting thing on any forum, because the files arent being hosted there. You should even be able to do it on free forum hosting. All you guys have at SFV is threads, barely any attachments. You guys shouldnt be using up all your cpu resources causing godaddy to freak out on you either...

I hope you SFV people are willing (this time around) to ask pescado or someone (hell even me with my limited knowledge) before jumping in and wasting money like last time...not all of us can contribute cash, but we can contribute opinions, experience, etc. And anyone with cash to blow, should wait until they hear real details about what the money will be spent on....

That makes me sound juvinile and impatient, and I am not in denial that I am both.

:D Oh you do, but this is PMBD so that's alright. :P

Only joking - not really. But you make a good point - is it the hosting or the (what would be) ridiculously high priced software?  If it's the hosting, that would be understandable, but if it's the software, surely some sort of community effort could be made to set up cheaper easier software.  SFVers are always very friendly to each other, so I'm sure that you could work something out.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Dr House on 2008 March 15, 23:17:29
Maybe splitting the downloads from SFV would help. No threads, no links and no pics for the downloads would make a big relief for the forum part. Every item had 1 page, 1 pic (at least), several links leading to the page and one for the download; plus a gazillion of PMs exchanged for each item when there was no download link (approx. 1/10th of the pages). No wonder it bloated. Splitting SFV in 2 is mayber a better solution. Files here, forum in it's own place where you want it to be.

Why keeping it seperate from PMBD? Pescado would love to have more hostage files to piss off paysites or kiss-my-ass-to-get-my-file-sites. Why are you so persuaded that the forum part would die without the download part?

Title: Re: SFV

So I am a SFV regular, being there for over two years by now, having hundreds of posts. Here I am with a little more than 50 posts in one year...

The reason I love SFV isn't the downloads. As you all know the files are here as well.

The community is different. Let's see if I can get it right:

Items:
SFVPMBD
Files sometimes uploaded at once, everyone can contributeFiles get uploaded by only some few people, sometimes takes a lot of time if ever
Shares Sims1 and Sims2 itemsShares only Sims2 items
Has Paysite items as well as forum gifts, unavailables etc.Only paysite items
Is about filesharingIs about destroying paysites
Possibility to share own creations based on paysite stuff
and other creations
"Why does anyone fix paysite crap?"

Community:
SFVPMBD
Nice communityFor newbies looks nasty
WCIF-areaNo WCIF
Social areaSharkbait
No bashing, no cats, no rumPeople are sometimes hesitant to post

Yes, the whole community over there is different, although quite a lot of people are there and here.
If it was just for the files people could forget about SFV easily. But it isn't. You are allowed to have your own oppinion about paysite items and quality of free items, and you can share your own creations. (I have shared things there that I recolored but didn't have permission to share, one item because the creator I contacted didn't answer, another one because noone could tell me who the original creator was...Not because I wanted to ignore their policies!! )

However, it's good to know what the reason for the downtime is.

You're not being rude at all. After all this time she it's about money? If that was the case why wasn't she over here from the start explaining what the problem was? If not here, she could have posted a notice (like she has in the past) to let her members know wtf was going on. She knows this forum is here. She knows that a lot of her members are members here. She might even be a member here. What's her problem with coming over here and asking for help?  I don't think she's shown any consideration to her loyal members. She sends her good friend Rds over here instead to ask for money when her members used to offer to donate to help in the past?

Something is very shady indeed. Personally, if you can't address me directly you don't need my help. I'm not going to fork over one red cent after you decide it's okay to let me know what the problem is after all this time has passed then have the audacity to send your mod (who didn't know what was going on either) to request donations.

I do miss the hard to find files that could be found at SFV. The forum was OK, but not to my taste. The problem is that it's getting out of hand for the people who run it. What needs to happen is that they need to decide if they can or want to continue or just turn it over to someone else. Donation drives are much more effective if people know what the goal is and there is some kind of chart up that they can see progress on. I see this on other sites too. People are burned out. They shouldn't feel obligated to continue if they don't want to, but it would be so much better if they'd turn it over to someone else rather than vanishing.

I thought rds already stated what the issue was - it's money.  Two people looking after two children nowadays is getting hard enough let alone doing the whole thing on your own - running a forum would be the last thing on your mind.  But I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with what someone else is said, that if running the forum is becoming too much of a strain, it might be time to hand in the towel or pull it down, at least we'll know where it stands.  I know it will suck because I'm a regular member there also, but it kinda gets frustrating when you get comfortable with things, and then it goes down without warning *shrugs*

I can relate Charlotte!  SFV...We could have easily just download shit from the booty but I miss the people that I actually made friends with, chatted with, and found those nicely furnished Asian Lots with....I miss doing the treasure hunts and bringing back to my fellow simmers what I've found and wanted to share with them.

You mean to tell me that all this time I was feeling lonely and missing SFV so much was because of money?  RDS, when you find out how much is needed to get the site back up and running, let us know but I can't donate anything until sometime next month when my husband starts working...

Just let us know...I am willing to help out!

I don't suggest making PMBD and SFV one site, that is just like asking Calalilly to give up her site and open a thread here to post her stuff instead: DO NOT WANT
It seems you are all thinking we want to assimilate your community (or want to make people think that, I don't know), but you are wrong.

What alot of people here are trying to tell you is that there are different, cheaper and more efficient ways to go about things.

Free solution:
- Get SMF, a free forum software
- Ask Pescado if he can host the site: this means you can upload files onto the forum itself, meaning no more millions of pm's, no more looking over your shoulder for spies that get the files deleted, a lot easier to find what you are looking for.
- Pick a cute theme, install a few mods and games, and your community there like you've always done.
- Have that done in less than 2 days without asking people for money

Your solution:
- Get money to pay for the expensive bill, while you could do it for free
- Keep paying for hosting
- Keep the inefficient system, prone to sabotage from lowlifes who have nothing better to do
- Have the same problem in 3 months, 6 months? Who knows?

I agree with Carissa. PMBD can be harsh at times and I luv it here fellow simmers but sometimes all the grr and the lurk more and stuff makes folks not want to participate. Folks feel comfortable at SFV and they want and need it back. So no matter what the problem is...for the folks who want it back they need to come together and find a way. I am missing Kathy and Eric at InSim. So I can feel for the folks that are missing SFV. We are slowly losing the sites we love.

Even being an outsider to this, I'm feeling the exasperation.  If you can't handle it and there are clearly people who love SFV and want to help, why not hand it over to someone you trust for a while until you get your RL stuff together?  It's better than taking it completely down and making everyone miserable.

It's effecting those of us who don't even use SFV.. there must be others like me that's tired of people coming over here, crying, and asking, "Wheeeeeeen will it be back?!!!!!!1111"  We don't know.  The owner of SFV apparently doesn't even know.  :P

Okay, I'm still learning new stuff every day...amazing at my age  :D

There is free forum software, which SFV apparently did not like.  So they went to an expensive pay software, which the site owner cannot afford, so the site goes down, and no one knows why for two months  ???

In the meantime, like Miss A pointed out, we have the lost SFV forum people over here asking "When will it be back?", which does get a bit annoying.

And SFV could use free forum hosting software, probably get some free hosting space for their files, and have the site back up and running in a short period of time, if I understand all this correctly.

*scratches head* I know I just woke up from a nap and may still be a little bit drowsy, but this seems like a no-brainer to me.

And BTW, creators over here do share their things with us.  I guess they just don't see the point of fixing damaged things when they can make their own and not borrow someone else's ideas.  And as some of us have said before, once we had the availability of paysite files, they lost their appeal, if you ever wanted them in the first place.  My downloads file is now 80-85% free downloads, and I like them a whole lot better :)

I'm just trying to understand why this is such a hard decision for TPTB at SFV to reach.  I'm more than willing to donate to sites for annual funding drives, or the like, but when there are free options available, why not take them?

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Charlotte on 2008 March 16, 01:49:38
Nouk, I totally understand what you're saying and happen to agree with what your saying.  My replies are to those who think that we only go there for the filesharing, and who also think that those of us that call SFV our "home" could fit in here.  There may be a reason why SIH hasn't come here to ask for help, we know there are money issues and who knows, it could possibly mean that she no longer has access to the internet.

I don't know, maybe we can all get together and come up with a solution to this - with the way money is going at the moment, for a lot of people, I don't see the point in paying for hosting if we can get it for free.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Paden on 2008 March 16, 02:30:40
Simple Machines Forum software is nonexpensive/free and very easy to use for a forum. There are many attractive layouts that are easy to use and easy to tweak. We're all about free stuff here, so why in the fucking hell pay for goddamn forum software that's gonna break your freakin budget? I just don't get it.

How do I know about SMF layouts? Easy, I use the damn things myself. Meh! Yeah, I'm still learning, but it's not that fucking hard. If you want a social forum, get one and get the software for it without paying too damn much. It's about the value and ease for the site master and SMF offers both. Any one of you from the SFV community could make a back-up board on a free hosting site and congregate there while things get straightened out. I don't like hearing that folks can't make their bills or feed their kids, it hurts cause I've been there more often than anyone here will ever know, but any of you lot could have kept the forum part of it alive while she takes care of the RL problems.

We don't want to absorb you, we aren't the damn Borg. We co-exist, plain and simple. Thing is, while we feel for you about your forum home being down, we can't fix it for you. We can commiserate and empathize to some extent, especially those pirates that are also members at that site as well as this one. I guess I'm just saying is that if you miss "your" community so much, provide an alternative to it until your "home" opens back up. Like I said, I've heard about free forum hosting all over the place. Use it, gather your friends together and keep the spirit of your home alive until the new house, so to speak, is set up for you to move in.

It's all fine and well for her to ask for help, but shouldn't this have been brought to the attention of you that belong to the forum before a standstill was reached? Pride in what you're doing is all well and good, but when it causes something to go to hell, it's gone to far. Ask for help and you'll be surprised at how willing people will be to offer it when they know what it's for.

I agree with Euterpe and Paden

This is not a hard decision at all to make. If there is a FREE alternative and your strapped for cash. Take it.
If you don't have time, chuck it to someone else and just be a member.

Noone is going to judge you for that. I am happy to know that SFV is going to live on, to the best of it's means.

Title: Re: SFV

Okay, there is a lot that you guys don't understand so I will try my best to answer all your concerns.

First, I don't think SIH knows that I'm here at all.  I came here because I know a lot of SFV members are also here and I can effectively update them on what I know.  It's not that she doesn't come on here because she doesn't like it here, it's just that she doesn't have the time right now.  So this is my way of letting you all know that SFV isn't completely gone.

SIH got that forum because the reason the other one went kaput was because it was cheap and could not handle the amount of members that SFV has.  It is getting close to 6000 members now.
SIH has told me she will not switch, she just paid for the server and it is non-refundable.
I have a feeling someone will think that's the wrong solution, but that is was SIH wants to do and it can't be contested.

We have been approached with the idea to let Pes host us.  When we had the with the old server, that was everyone's solution.  It won't work , or, we aren't willing to do that.

SIH had plenty of funds to keep it up and running when she bought the forum.  She wouldn't of bought it if her financial situation were strapped, that is a lot of money for a server after all!  I am talking to her on messenger right now, and she told me I could say WHY she no longer has those funds.  She is currently going through a divorce directly quoting, "that takes prioity over the server.. sorry"  I hope you all understand.  Her ex-husband is out of the country and so far has not been helping with support.  They have children.  That isn't all that is going on trust me there is a LOT more!   Tip of the iceberg if you will.
Point is, she had the funds.  Then Real Life happened.  Please don't judge her.  It happens to all of us at one point :-[

Anyway, I'm trying to answer everything that was brought up.  If it doesn't seem right, if you think this is shady, I understand and I am not asking that you pledge/donate.  The members who know us and me will think otherwise, from what I hear the bill isn't that outstanding just overwhelming for SIH at the moment.

If you have anymore questions, I think my inbox is full at the moment and I want to get more info before I delete those PMs of course.  I will be checking my email periodically, RDSatSFV@gmail.com

I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression about my intentions or that you're confused about what is going on.  Trust me, I'm trying my best to keep you all informed and I hope I answered all the questions/concerns.

rds, most forums have more members than that. so that "too many members" thing is bullshit unless you had that many people online AT ONCE, and not even mts2 has that happen....and each time i was on sfv there was no more than 10 people sitting on the site posting.

Also, you said she just paid for the server, but youre talking about the forum software. Forum software and server hosting are completely different....and this makes me wonder if you guys understand forums/hosting at all? Or if you mean that she renewed hosting and paid for the forum at the same time?

If she just paid for the server (her hosting), then she can disable the forum and put up a page telling everyone wtf is going on.
If you mean that she just paid for the forum (the expensive bloated software you guys were posting on), then she should be looking for new hosting that can handle the forum (although honestly godaddy should be able to keep hosting it)

phpbb may not be the best solution, but just because ONE free software fails you, doesnt mean all of them will. Pay items are not always better than free ones -- like sims crap lol

How would Pes hosting you guys not work? I provide hosting with Nouk to over 40 sites, we dont get involved in what they do on them (unless it effects the server), Pes can host you guys and not touch the site ever except when you need tech help. Providing hosting does NOT mean being involved in any way. So it CAN work, you guys just dont want to do it?

im sorry that she is going through RL stuff right now, but throwing money at a broken site is not going to fix it. She needs to figure out WHICH is the problem: the forum or the hosting and find a better solution. Nouk and I (and others) have already said this. If she doesnt have time for it right now, which it sounds like she doesnt, why doesnt she just ask Pescado to host, give him her soul to set up SMF or something real quick (it takes 15min, ive done it multiple times), and you guys can be back on your merry way without her having to worry about it anymore?

I don't understand why you're poking sticks at RDS, Jess.
When it comes down to it, it's SIH's forum, not RDS's, so it's possible she can't explain things quite the way SIH would.

RDS, you should ask SIH if she could write an e-mail you could post here for us, explaining what she needs and stuff. That way we know exactly the problem and we can help her to fix it. And there would be less misunderstanding.

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Anouk on 2008 March 16, 16:57:59
There is complete unwillingness to make compromise, that is the problem. Just read it there in the post. They WANT to keep the expensive software and hosting because of some aversion against being hosted by someone else (unless you have your own server in your bassment, you are always hosted by someone else but hey?), there is no time to do anything about the site, and there's unwillingness to let someone else do it. So forget about it. That is what they want, let them do it.
If their community want to get back what they had, they should do something themselves instead of moping around. So go on guys, make a site in 5 minutes and start chatting again! Not a big deal or hard work: http://www.freesmfhosting.com/ If someone is in a divorce, they will not have time to do it for you! Besides it's probably temporary.

Post by: calalily on 2008 March 16, 17:00:20
I don't think she is poking sticks at rds - she's asking questions and rds is acting as SIH's agent at this point in time - there is no SIH to ask questions of.  Some of those questions need to be asked - this is totally vague, and not really clear on what is being paid for, and what the problems are.

Ah, FUCK........this is exactly what I was thinking to myself........something horrible in her personal life!! When you can, rds....let her know she's in my thoughts. As for why SFV when PMBD is here? The biggest reason I can think of is the TS1 items that are available (there are TONS of TS1'ers at SFV still sharing old files, payfiles and files from sites that have closed) That's it mostly. And no one gets jumped on when files are requested.

Alright, so you all still have questions, I understand that.  However, I will not answer questions that have already been answered.  I cannot find a nice way to say this, but as far as the whole argument that Pes hosting or a free forum is the way to go, you really are wasting your breath and it's a debate that I've been through several times before.  You can guess what happened at the end of that.  Someone said that SIH is paying for a server that doesn't work, but this forum works great.  The point I make again, stooop saying we should let Pes host or go to a free server.  The answer is NO.

The reason why I haven't thrown out an amount is honestly I don't know.  I have an estimate.  I do not have access to the forum's billing, I do know the monthly bill but why should I announce it here?  And I have been telling the people who have PMed me or emailed me, again I throw it out RDSatSFV@gmail.com.  In my opinion those are the people who need to know.

If you start up a free forum, please don't use the name SFV.  That will end up being confusing in the end, and SIH will get the forum back up and running!  I find it is also disrepectful to use that name as another non-affiliated forum.

Ry, that's a great idea.  E-mail me with your and whoever else's questions, I will try to get it back to you next time I talk to SIH.

I'm going to be signing out of here.  My intention is to FINALLY get the ball rolling to try to get the forum back up and running.  It was completely my idea to do the pledge, and I have been hopelessly bugging (and yes I do mean really BUGGING) SIH every time I talk to her about the forum and about the status of it.  So, this is my attempt.  I know that PMBD isn't a place for warm squishy hugs but I thought it harmless to just come here and update SFV members.  I like you guys.  I don't like how you guys handle situations you with which you disagree or don't understand.

To SFV members, I will no longer be updating here at PMBD.  Feel free to contact me via email and I will answer your questions the best of my ability as I have here.

I didn't mean to be disrespectful, I just couldn't think about a better name I'm sorry.
It doesn't have another affiliate forum "SMF" stands for "Simple Machines Forum", that's it.
Also I think I made it clear that it will only be a temporary forum, i'll take it offline as soon as SFV's back, and I think the users know that as well.

and this whole attitude of "fuck you guys, you dont need to know because youre telling me im wrong and not buying what im saying to you" thing is more bullshit.

If you need help, you have to accept ALL kinds of help, not just money.

I'm glad you finally answered the question--its the expensive bloated forum software causing the problem and thats what she needs money for. You can think you're right all you want, but many people have proven you wrong--you can host a large site (especially one that doesnt really use attachments like SFV) with tons of people spamming constantly, for cheap or free. You guys have a grudge against pescado--fine. But you shouldnt be punishing your visitors for something so trivial and childish.

SFV could be back up already and back to "normal" but you guys are dragging ass and being difficult and you dont need to be. So although I told people I'd try to help, I'm not going to bother anymore since all you guys want is money and nothing else it seems.

This whole thing reeks of bullshit and scam.

btw where are sherry/pas/anyone else who was in charge over at SFV? why is only RDS posting over here? doesnt that seem odd to anyone else? and why is SIH not disabling the forum and putting up a webpage explaining what the problem is so people can help her out like she has before?

I was only a member at SFV for two days and had no clue how it really worked yet. But I will rather pass on those few Sims1 files I yearned for or even pay for those still available at paysites than spending money on an overinflated forum software.  :-\
I use SMF for years now without any problem and see no reason why it shouldn't be good enough for them.
In the only thread I checked at SFV all links were broken because the files were already deleted from the free hosts. It would have been so perfect to have a forum on Pescado's server with attachments.

Paypal is run by thieves, yes. But seeing as all you have is a forum, technically, I could get that back up and running anywhere within an hour, without money involved. Any forum software of your choice could be deployed. There's no reason a forum like that should cost more than about $100 a year, tops, if you decide to strike out on your own. Don't overpurchase, and DON'T BUY WINDOZE.

I can set you up here in Malaysia, too. I ask for only the low, low price of YOUR SOUL, MORTAL.

STOOOOP expecting people to pay for your arrogant ways, and if they don't want to do it, guiltripping them, like you did poor Ferris, or telling them they 'simply don't understand'. Ferris actually offered a better solution than you were ever willing to. You should be ashamed of how you treated your members.
If you have time to tell people to STFU and give you money and NOT insult SFV for trying to bring a community back together, you have time to make your own damn temporary forum for your members.
You are NOT willing to find any solution, you are ONLY willing to make others pay for YOUR bad choices and being a complete arrogant bastard about it if they have their reservations about it. Basically, all you have been doing is disrespecting people ("Oh, you don't understand, you don't need to know, I don't like how you handle things, now please shut up about it") and expecting them to give you money without proper information. Even your loyal members. If you didn't think people would notice, you are full of it. Consider any support from my side gone forever.

Sorry to see SIH has only you to speak for her. You are looking more and more like a scam artist.

To hell with being nice!

Quote
First, I don't think SIH knows that I'm here at all.  I came here because I know a lot of SFV members are also here and I can effectively update them on what I know.  It's not that she doesn't come on here because she doesn't like it here, it's just that she doesn't have the time right now.

How is it that you're refusing to answer questions but you can ask for money on SIH's behalf?  Now you're not going to answer questions that have already been answered? Why? You expect people to come out of their pockets and just GIVE it to you? You have to be out of your mind! First she doesn't know you're here, then she does. Which one is it? You tell some members some of the truth but don't tell the rest? WTF?

Quote
We have been approached with the idea to let Pes host us.  When we had the with the old server, that was everyone's solution.  It won't work , or, we aren't willing to do that.

There have be several offers and suggestions to SFV's problems but you/she flat out refuses them.  If I were a member I'd seriously have a problem with that.

Quote
I do know the monthly bill but why should I announce it here?

Ummm...because you came here to ask for money....no donations. ::)

Quote
And I have been telling the people who have PMed me or emailed me, again I throw it out RDSatSFV@gmail.com.  In my opinion those are the people who need to know.

"Need to know". See, that's a big problem. SFV members needed to know 2 months ago what was going on.

Quote
If you start up a free forum, please don't use the name SFV.  That will end up being confusing in the end, and SIH will get the forum back up and running!  I find it is also disrepectful to use that name as another non-affiliated forum.

A few years back with the site went down some of the mods and members started up an temp site using the SFV name with no problem. The members found it and joined, hung out and shared files until the SFV reopened. Nobody, including the other founders or SIH found it disrespectful or had a problem with the SFV name being used. In fact they were all quite happy to have a place where the members could congregate. I know because I was there. (Qubeez-former founder since summer of 2000)

Quote
I'm going to be signing out of here.  My intention is to FINALLY get the ball rolling to try to get the forum back up and running.  It was completely my idea to do the pledge, and I have been hopelessly bugging (and yes I do mean really BUGGING) SIH every time I talk to her about the forum and about the status of it.  So, this is my attempt.

You're doing this all on your own. What happened to Sherry and Pas? They practically ran SFV for the last 3 years. You were made a moderator last Jul/Aug and now you alone are running the show?

And wait a second!
Quote
I DO have an update, but it's not what I would like but it's pretty necessary that I get this out...

I talked to SIH and she has okayed that I start accepting donations in order to get the forum back up and running.  Yes, the reason that it is down is completely monetary.  We stopped taking donations in the past because Paypal is a horrible company and because of Thomas's finger pointing and false accusations Paypal STILL has the donated money from over a year ago.  Must be great to be a company that can steal money from people and get away with it huh??

Ok, first it was SIH's idea about donations but now it's soley yours? Are you all confused yet? :-\

Quote
If it doesn't seem right, if you think this is shady, I understand and I am not asking that you pledge/donate.

There ya go!!!

Quote
I know that PMBD isn't a place for warm squishy hugs but I thought it harmless to just come here and update SFV members.  I like you guys.  I don't like how you guys handle situations you with which you disagree or don't understand.

I like it here. They're brutally honest unlike "warm squishy hugs".

To the SFV members that are here, I suggest you think long and hard before coming out of your pockets. I've been around since Sims1 and have seen my share of scams.

SIH is going through whatever she's going thru and her priority is her real life right now. I can understand that. It happens to all of us. BUT if I ran a popular forum for many years that had loyal and devoted members I know I would take a few moments out of my day and show them some sort of consideration and respect by dropping in and telling them something.

In the past when the server went down SIH threw up a web page in minutes to let the members know what was going on and how to keep in touch. She knows some of her mods and members are here. She should be here with some sort of explanation. If she can talk to Rds on yahoo what's a few clicks to get here?

SFV is a great forum for files and hanging out just like this forum. It's been offered a life saver and it looks to me like the owner would rather let it sink.

This whole thing reeks of bullshit and scam.
I wouldn't quite say *SCAM*, but the fact of the matter is, SFV has consistently mismanaged its resources. And yes, Paypal is a bunch of bandits and thieves. We've had problems with them also, but were able to retrieve the funds after about a year.

But mostly, SFV has consistently mismanaged its resources and purchased things it simply does not need or things which are utterly useless, and then run into problems. For instance, I heard you purchased a *WINDOZE* server. This alone assured that you wouldn't be able to do jack shit with it, because effective use of Windoze would require someone to actually physically go to the system and operate it! Windoze is not for servers. Period.

Naturally, no one there knows how to actually operate a server, hence why things crash and die without warning. Like I said: You can set yourself up on any one of available free or low-cost webhosting options, given that you host no files anyway, or you can move to Malaysia, or whatever. I don't care. Alternatively, you can just continue to leave the area unfilled, and if it becomes demanded enough, I'll just open a file exchange block here, thus resolving the debate. I haven't done it because A: You already did, and B: it'd be extra work I don't need, but since if you don't care to do it anymore, I'm sure I can streamline the process quite nicely.

And, you know, we could MAKE a WCIF section, if we really wanted it. And it would have rum and cats.

Pescado's level of smart will always amaze (and disturb) me.

I don't understand how anyone could feel good representing a forum with that kind of attitude rds.  Ever since the site went down I've heard about how great that site is and how everyone misses it, the talking, the people, the filesharing.

As the only rep for SFV that I see, I can't figure out what everyone misses so much.  Shoot.  You can stay here to get spoken to like a 12 year old child.  Hell, Pescado will do it for free, even!

That would be a kind of excellent idea Pescado.  deelink is right - we already get them - if we have a section we don't ever, ever have to look at it if we don't want.

And bonus is, it would officially make you MISCREANT NUMBER ONE in the sims community.  You would be the "total bastard package" to all.  :D

Since I've joined this board, one of the many things I've read about is SFV.  And since it went down right after I joined this board, I haven't had the chance to check it out.

Frankly, after reading all the reasons why it's not coming back and what the members aren't doing to get it back up, I honestly don't care to know anymore.  No offense to those that are loyal to it, I just have no idea what I'm missing.

I like it here.  Yeah, you aren't "warm and squishy" but the level of intelligent conversation here is far superior to any other board I belong to.  Not to mention, all the regular members keep me laughing with the wit.

I know I'll personally enjoy reading the WCIF section, just because I know it'll be like leading a noob to the slaughter.

Hehehe, so you could open a section that was called WCIFs but then there'd be a sticky that would say: "We don't do WCIFs! Read the FAQ, noob!"
And the noobs could post to their heart's content there, but nobody would answer.

I'm in mortal fear for my soul, I agree with Pescado yet again.  :o

We are getting everyone anyway, why not a WCIF section? Or a post-links-to-stuff-not-available-in-the-booty section? Then we get rid of the retarded wcif posts that are so annoying in the rest of the phorum.

I don't think former members should care in the slightest about using the SFV name if they want to start up a forum again. I was never very active there, but there were a few things available there that I wanted. If Sims 1 people want to start a separate forum, they should.

My 2 cents worth, not that one would care, but I don't like the idea of a file sharing system like SVF here.

1)There is not scan to put the files through if the links are open like they are at SVF, thus more banning by sites like TSR.

2) We get watched more, and more shit happens and not in a good way. We get more stupid ass trolls and paysite owners who are fucking annoying.

3) I just see it becoming a mess and a half, cluster fuck extraordinair.

A WCIF would be Ok though, as long as you made someone a Mod to keep it cleaned out and organized.

I also vote for a WCIF section.  At least it would keep those who don't bother to lurk and read the FAQ before posting a place to put their requests rather than scattering them all over the rest of the forum.  I'd even *raises hand cautiously* volunteer to help organize it.  After all, for three years I dealt with people with the mentality of "Is my modem turned on?" while in an online technical support forum, so I developed the patience necessary to put up with the kind of questions we're likely to get.

I actually like helping with WCIFs on other forums since I have mad searching skillz and excellent memory... Or to be more exact, I did, until the WCIF forum I frequented got swamped by a new member who'd post about 20 WCiFs every day, and it was glaringly obvious s/he didn't bother looking for anything before posting a new WCIF.  >:(

I'm assuming the SFVers miss the community aspect of SFV, not the actual sharing since the PMBD forum is a much harsher place. I don't think starting a new sharing area would be an answer to that. However, I must admit I like the idea of sharing unavailable stuff (such as contest prizes and other exclusive things).

Person walks down the dock to the pirate ship, "Pardon me, good sirs and madams, but could you possibly tell me where to find..."

Pirate #1: Dance!

Person: I beg your pardon?

Pirate #2: Yar! Do a little dance, and then we be tellin ya where ta find what ye be lookin fer.

Person: Fine. *does a little dance* Now, where can I find...

Pirate #3: Don't forget the rum!

Pirate #1: Oh, aye! Ya gotta give us rum, too!

I don't know what's all in it, just stuff that I downloaded and used in my game, but probably has disappeared elsewhere. I dunno how much is borked, though, so it would be a "get it if you want it, don't blame me if it doesn't work," because some didn't work when I got it. Hell, I think there is some paystie sims 1 shit in there that my sister paid for before I screamed at her for it....

I personally don't think we should go into the TS1 business.  But, like Paden, I've got at least 3-4 gigs of stuff on supplemental hard drives and CDs that I could donate to the cause.  But I think TS2 is enough without adding to the mix.

People haven't been moaning about the forum files for pages and pages. And if you haven't noticed, some have taken the initiative to start a temporary forum, something RDS hasn't tried yet, while she certainly had the time. They missed the community, not the files. Also, RDS has written some inconsistencies, has basically kicked down the one member that created a place for SFV's to hang out in, refused to take any help except money, and is also refusing to share some simple information that would have gotten more people to help. All the people in here understand perfectly SIH has no time to do anything and has bigger fish to fry. So calling people stupid and/or heartless is a sign of 1. you not reading 2. you not caring what people say, you're just going to protect RDS. 3. you simply ignoring all those other SFV's that have sympathized
That's two people from SFV calling their own members stupid for no reason. Are you all out to sabotage this whole thing or what?  :o

And even if people do say: "Oh boy I miss those files, I wish they came back." How does that even translate to being heartless or stupid?

Also: being critical = heartless? Do you know how often people have been parted from their money or even scammed? It's the whole reason this forum excists. If RDS had treated people as equals and had offered enough information, none of these questions would have been nessecary.

RDS has been giving out more detailed information, to those who have PMed or E-mailed her about helping. She was asked not to post the forum details in the public forum, and she simply did as she was asked.
If anyone would like to help and wants to get the details of the situation better explained, then all you have to do is E-mail her. Exactly as she stated before.
I don't blame her for not airing it all here. If the reaction from a few of you is what she can expect. All she was trying to do was find a way to get in touch with those members she was certain could help. She asked that people PM her, well if you'd have done that to offer help you could have been better informed. But instead people have decided to treat the situation as some kind of huge drama. A scam? Really? C'mon. Why would SIH pay out of pocket for years to host her forum, then turn around and *scam* money from people for no reason?
I PMed RDS about helping and was brought up on the situation at hand. If you really care about helping, then I suggest you do the same and you will be told what is needed etc...

Frankly, am less inclined to donate given how the circumstances have played out in the first place. It would have been much more appropriate to make an official statement or notice from the main site, rather than leave all sfv in the dark for 2 months with very little petty information. SFV members deserve better, especially if money is being asked for, How do we know if sfv is really going to come back?

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Ry on 2008 March 17, 17:15:43
How do you know any donation you make goes where you intend it too? Trust.
SIH has earned it over the years from lots of members of the sharing community, for obvious reasons. If you don't trust that the forum will come back after donations, then don't donate. It's that simple.
I can't imagine she'd take the money and run, I mean, really...but I guess I've been around since she very first came on the scene, and I've *known* her for over five years, so that may leave me biased.

What needs to be done is it explained for normal members of SFV - a note on the actual site as to why its down and what is happening. SFV is well known for having a close strong community with loyal members, and the members are being left out of this as they do not know what is going on - and those that read here, or Muslows place, and whether else RDS has posted this, are just being told that money is needed.

I'm rather agreed to what boldenbeau has just said - this whole situation less inclines you to donate. There should have been an official statement on the main site, rather then just leaving the site for 2 months and suddenly asking for money. Your members deserve more

It is understood that SIH has real life issues, and that it was difficult for RDS to get the -little- information she has, but its a tad incompetent to leave it for so long and do so little...After the amount of times the site has gone down, it would be thought that by now members are informed of what is going on and it is sorted out quickly.

Get a message up on the main site. Say what is going on, and what help you need. You need to get an exact figure of how much money is needed, and sort out a donation bar of some sort.

Although with the amount of problems SFV has had with servers, software, hosts, etc, it is really stressed that maybe you should think of alternatives. Coming on here and saying that there is NO way you will even think about being hosted by Pescado, and dislike pmbd, and dislike the community here, hardly strengthens the positive vibes towards this. Hardly aviseable to go to a site, bash it a bit, then ask for money...meh hm..

Ry, you are rather biased with it. Take a step back and look at it..I dont think this is a scam, as others have said, but this is most irritating and uninformative. Personally I like SFV and am a regular member there, but the treatment of members in this thread makes it all seem rather unfriendly to go back to. Makes me see the site very differently.

And on the proposed WCIF area here - meh would save on having the threads in other areas, and people have said there is a need for one.

Hey Cap.
Thing is, if people would just e-mail RDS, they'd get answers to all their questions. And no one chose to do that, they just ...whatever...bah.
*steps back*
I see what everyone is saying, but no one is stopping to consider that RDS can't tell more than she knows, and was asked NOT to spill it all on an open forum. SIH should stop by and let people know more, but I have had personal issues that completely took my mind off anything to do with the sims in the past, and why should we expect her to be any different?
Not everyone runs to the net when bad stuff happens, to talk to their internet buddies. Some people do, not everyone does.
I don't know. I can't help but feel that no one is taking emotions into consideration, it seems awfully selfish to me. Why should we expect her to stop what she's doing and post on the net when her personal life isn't going so well? Her family is priority one, not SFV, and I see nothing wrong with that.

ETA: I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, promise...lol. I'm just trying to understand the other POV and I can't.

It may not have been detailed information but you weren't left with your thumb up your ass wondering what was going on. Mods were immediately IM'ed or a web page was put up to keep you informed. Web pages today can be set up in minutes.

I've donated money for files or whatever else when I *knew what it was for* even when I shouldn't have. Never had a problem helping out in that way but when you're told money isn't the problem in one post then a few pages down you need money, a red light flashes...for me at least.

Ry,
I looked after I posted and thought I should change that. Thanks for the tip. ;) I don't have any questions. I'm no longer a founder there. I'm just an interested simmer/fan whatever these days. SIH only seems to communicate with RDS anyways.

ETA: I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, promise...lol. I'm just trying to understand the other POV and I can't.
AND HEY JOFRED!  :D *gives jofred noogies*

:-\ But I dont want to be noogied *whines and pokes RY*

And I get your view on this. I just think 2 months is way too long.

Get a note up on the site to say what is going on, its unfair to the members to just leave them in the dark. I really doubt each and every member is going to email RDS, and *more* will see it if its on the main site, and thus you will get more help quicker. Seems sense to me

Understand that SIH is having a tough time in real life, and that is more important, but it really is best to put a note up on the site - means people see it, people know what is going on, there will be no more confusion by other people (RDS) giving the little information they have, reassures the members, and means that SFV will most likely get the help it needs.

How is that a bad thing?  :-\

Title: Re: SFV
Post by: Ry on 2008 March 17, 18:06:19
It's not a bad thing. I do agree that something should have been said, but I can't be mad that she didn't say anything after finding out she's having some RL issues. I guess it all boils down to personality, and my personality is one that can't take offense to that, whereas others have personalities that do.
If that makes sense at all...lol.

ETA: Gelbarc, in the future, you should modify your posts instead of double posting. It's quite the no-no here.
As for your questions, how can I answer them? You know I can't. You'll have to ask SIH yourself, if you're so interested.

I do know that SIH is an extremely private person. And I'm okay with that.  ;D I've downloaded so many friggin files from SFV for over 4 years now so I'm more than happy to give back if needed.  :D

Agree with CJojoba. If a notice was posted on main site, would also provide the reassurance that’s needed as there is this uncertainty present. There’s Rds word and then there’s the opposition’s point of view which causes the confliction. Making it official would balance and elevate that confusion.

As I understand it, no-one here is angry or even irritated with SIH. If you're telling people to leave SIH allone, well, they're not bothering her in the first place. She obviously has better things to do. If SIH wants to keep her forum, even if it costs 100 bucks a month, then she should do that, no matter how inefficient and expensive it is. There's always willing members to help contribute, no matter if it can be run cheaper. However, people will have questions about it, have opinions about it, have reservations about it, and will have suggestions, will want to talk about it, and the way RDS has gone about things and waves any suggestions away with "will you stop whining about the forum! well we don't want that PERIOD, we don't like it here, the ONLY ones who need to know are the ones to contact me, you don't understand, etc" is what annoys people and makes them distrust what's happening here. It's kinda sad that by what RDS is doing, people don't want to donate. SIH herself is not the problem and I think people understand that.
If people say they don't want to donate because things can be handled alot better in their opinion, well tough. Just don't tell them they are stupid and heartless. That's all.

I'm going to dig out the disk(s) and upload the content in lots of about 90Mb at a time to MediaFire sometime in this coming week and when it's done, I'll let you all know. So I don't clog the board here with it, send me a PM for the links and I'll be happy to oblige. I dn't think PMBD should get into the business of Sims 1, either, but I am aware that much of the content that was uploaded to the net is no longer available, so I'm glad to help folks get what they want. I got a lot of content from my sister, who downloaded some pay stuff like I said and she got some of it from secret file sharers, so I have no clue what is exclusive and what isn't. Also, once this project is loaded to Media Fire, feel free to share the links with others! Share nicely, kids!

As to the whole SFV thing, if RDS has any access to the page/sever what have you, she ought to put up a page stating briefly what is going on and asking for help so their users can get a sense of what is going on and not be left in the dark. It bites when your home forum goes down and you don't know why or even how you can help. I know that many people got irritated with the "you don't need to know, talking down to you," attitude that seemed to be displayed. I can understand not wanting your personal details splashed about but being as RDS seems to have been deputized to deal with the questions and such, she also should have been authorized to set up a back-up forum so the members didn't lose hope of it ever coming back.

Real life has the worst, absolute fucking worst habit of smacking you in the face and making you go around the block backwards at the worst of time, that's for sure. I empathize with SIH for what she's going through, I really do. Been there twice and the second was worse than the first, but that's not the issue. Thing is, if they want to get their site up and rolling again, things are going to have to be done and ways are going to have to be found. It's up to them to find them and also to let their people in on what in the hell is going on! If people are willing to be so loyal, they ought to be treated better. You don't leave friends in the dark.

You also shouldn't poke someone with a stick when they pluck up the balls to help keep your community together with a simple forum until you're able to get yours going again. Ferris did a very sweet thing, he/she set it up so all of the friends made at SFV wouldn't lose track of each other. That is loyalty to both SFV and the friends made, because without those people, SFV is nothing but a ghost. It's the users that make up a site, more than you realize. They are the ones that post, share and contribute to the success of what the site owner has. To receive you have to give, and when you give you will receive. I hope that makes sense.

Just be glad that there was someone willing to step into the gap and provide a place for the users of SFV to post and share thoughts and wait for you until this thing is resolved. They aren't trying to usurp anything, they're trying to keep touch with each other and nourish the friendships made at SFV. They're waiting for you, maybe a bit impatiently, but they're waiting. Please don't do anything that would cost you their loyalty. Ok, that's enough out of me and feel free to flame me if you want, it doesn't matter to me. I just spoke from my heart, like always. And I had the balls to post it, too.

Since it's a completely free board and not my own server and software, I can't do anything about that.
There are more users having the same problem with their boards hosted by freesmf, seems as if they don't even know exactly what's going on themselves:

I hope so, I was hoping that Ferris hadn't felt bad about putting it up and took it down.  I thought that everyone would be glad that Ferris had put something up, because, you know, I thought everyone just wanted to get the community back together.  But instead it seems to be frowned upon like no one wants it to be associated with SFV.  I'm sorry if what I'm saying is rather confusing but I'm trying to put this in a nice way ...

A simple, "Due to personal issues, donations are requested at this time to help get the forum on it's feet.  Please give anything you can via x to get to our tentative goal of x.  Thanks for your support," posted on SFV would go a long way towards making it a more inclusive situation without being terribly specific. Sure, there are going to be people who bother you for more information, but that's always going to happen.

Coming to another forum, rather than posting on your own, is going to cause questions just like the ones already asked.  I get that rds is kinda playing monkey in the middle.  SIH(understandably) has bigger fish to fry, and rds is trying to satisfy those asking questions.  If you have time to email, you can delegate some responsibility to another willing soul.  If you really don't want to deal with the hassle, then just close down the forum altogether and let the chips fall where they may.

That's just my 2 cents, with no ax to grind, based on what I've seen here and other sites since the forum went down this last time.

rds is a personal friend of SIH, not just over the internet but in RL as well.  She is also a moderator over at the SFV.
Nouk is right, we are taking care of things to the best of our knowledge (and Nouks help has been priceless) and a few of us have set up a forum somewhere else.

http://www.simscave.com/ferris/index.php

It's not the SFV, whether the SFV comes back up is beyond our knowledge - but we've set up a place for sim 1-ers, general filesharing and chat.  We don't have a TSR section, people are being directed to the booty.  Yeah, that's all I can say about it at this moment :D

There's quite a few people who now call the SimsCave home, the previous members from SFV and alot of people who were not part of the original site have joined also. The SimsCave is a great site and for the 1000 person anniversary Charlotte made a fabulous daybed and window seat for download.

Love that forum: clean layout, direct links, no hassle like make 50 posts to download! Thanks for pointing it out mates as i wouldn't have been able to find it alone ;)

All accounts are activated. So if you got no activation mail, just try to log in with username and password  :)
Accounts that aren't activated for some time get deleted. So if logging in does not work, try registering again .
If all does not work, pm Charlotte, Ferris or me here and we can activate it manually  :)
