a freewebs paysite with a confusing donation system is now closed and posted a big rant basically blaming wickednoukfamily

back story according to those in-the-know:
noanikko was a featured creator at wickedsims and left to turn his tiny freewebs site into a paysite even though he was offered free hosting (since wickedsims was hosting several sites at that time before the attack).
after wnf was created, and noanikko realized he wasnt making any money since his site was in the booty and could get tons more visitors if he was associated with the uber-amazing Nouk, contacts them asking for free hosting, but doesnt really ask, sort of demands/expects it and gives them attitude about how he just wants the free hosting, not the family aspect of it and blah blah blah

He gets told to check out sims2host (that thing mod_bv has been whoring out) and tells wnf "fine, i didnt want to join your stupid club anyways" (or something like that) and then closes his site and puts up the big rant.

(quoted just in case he sees this and runs off to edit/delete it)

the rant, makes no sense. WNF doesnt have anything up about paysites, only some of the individual sites do.

Hmm, it seems that he is a bit confused as to which side he's on. The rant keeps going back-and-forth. So he's saying that, essentially, PMBD's intent is good and we should keep adding things to the booty, but saying things about paysites being bad is wrong?  :?

Oh really???? Gee and I thought it closed because of the numerous complaints of not receiving the files you paid for. I am not the only one who paid for files, never to receive them.

The entire rant has no real logical argument, he seems (or she) to not think the EULA has any significance, for it is not once mentioned, now why is that?

So if it really is NOT about the money then why have "donation" items, that you can only get by paying for them? I'm not against a "donation" to help support free sites, and since Nouk was already hosting this idiot, his/her rant is just ridiculous....IMO

I see no reason as to why WickedNouk, which survives on donations, with a firm ethos of freesite hosting for all, shouldn't give free hosting to paysites - after all - no can't do it.  :?

Is this paysite owner fucking serious?  WickedNouk owes some hosting to some little pissant just cause he feels like it?  That's just what we need more of - demanding paysite owners.  I also note that here again, the argument against taking Numenor's stuff from the booty can serve as a warning on abandoning the zero tolerance policy.  They all think they're exempt - because they're small, or moderate, or they lure people in with free samples, or they aren't illegal in their country, or the EULA will soon be changed, or Tom Ass has EA in his pocket - whatever - and that someone else is "worse" than them.

*Note this is probably the most visitors ever to the site - barring the last time they were linked to from here - cause if a freewebs paysite is closing down - they must be losing some serious cash*.

He's a little bitch and tried to force WNF to host him.  I think he said he had payfiles because of hosting, but his intent was to still keep his payfiles up once snagging a comfy spot in WNF.  Honestly, he only wanted the exposure he'd get, and figured if he had payfiles + exposure, that means more people would pay for his crap.

There's absolutely no reason a site that is hosted for free should need "donations" of any kind.  If you want to be compensated for making custom content, apply for a job at EA.

Btw what message is he talking about?  WNF says absolutely nothing about pirates, paysites, or anything else.  They just say they host 100% free sites.

Thing is though, the function of WickedNoukFamily is not to talk about online thieves who charge for opyrighted stuff, it's to host free sites for free, who need hosting that won't close their site for every little stupid thing. Like actually using the promised bandwidth and such... it's a common problem.
It's also for people who have plans for a cute free site, but don't have the funds. Simple as that.

For more years than a large mass of "pirates" have been around filesharers were the ones demonized for sharing files.  No one stuck up for us.

Paysites have been allowed to wrongfully charge simmers (illegal) , ban them and share their IPs (illegal), smearing reputations and not once did I ever hear, "oh leave the poor filesharer alone".  Most likely out of fear that they would be affiliated with sharing and have to face the repercussions themselves.  

Now finally that people have the balls to stand up to paysites, we have criers, and no surprise it's usually people with a paysite.   We think you are scum because you are (read above paragraph for further information).   You can only push people to far before they react.  Paysites have no one but themselves to blame for the pickle they are in.

First, like I said, you can't sell a derivative work and make a profit legally. It just cannot be done legally. Think I'm full of shit? Second, you say your stuff is all original and stuff like that, right? Nope, not unless you found a way to make your own kind of .pckg file that is compatible with the Sims 2 game engine. Gotta have that one little file to get it into the game and once you put your work into it, then it becomes derivative and belongs to EA, cause you had to put that in there to make it work. HA! Third, sounds like Wicked and Nouk were kind enough to offer you free hosting so that it didn't have to come out of your pocket and you turned around and tried to bite. Bad beastie, bad, bad! Then, when you find out how much traffic they get, you want on the bandwagon, but oh yeah, you want to keep your payfiles? That is a contradiction in terms, but so is saying that paysite owners have charm, grace, elegance and intelligence.
Fourth, being a free site means that you give away the files without charging a dime, and not withholding delivery of said file until you get the money and sometimes not even then. Hey, dumbass! You failed the part of English where you had to provide definitions, didn't you? Doesn't surprise me for some reason. You also fail at tact, grammar and a few other things but we won't get into personal hygine or charm here cause I don't know you, thank God for that huge favour...
Fifth, you tried to demand that they give you free hosting while you raked in cash for those payfiles and didn't deliver the goods paid for. Uh, huh. That is just fucking stupid for so many reasons and on so many levels. They host only free sites, you remember those, the ones I've talked about already? The ones who give their stuff away for free and don't ask for anything in return, although a thank you is nice but not required.
Sixth, the paysite owners are the true pirates because they charge for content that is copyrighted and then try to control what the new owners of the content try to do with it. Screw that! It's like a department store trying to tell you that if you buy a pair of pants for a boy, a girl can't wear them after her big brother grows out of them. We share. Big fucking deal, because once the money changed hand, sale was done and the file was owned by the person who gave the money and they can do with it as they like, up to and including sharing.
Seventh, EA themselves said that file sharing is ok, and they never said that we can't share the files we pay for. DUH! Those files in the booty were all bought and paid for, so get over yourself, jerk. You obviously weren't good enough to make lotsa money at the game and if you were, apply to EA Games to be able to sell your shit legally.

All I have is All in one SEO, which I hardly ever use. The template accepts widgits, but I don't even think I have any of those. My categories were all done by hand. I half the time forget to categorize my posts. Trying to do better. I am thinking about changing the template anyway.  :lol:

I always check to see if a theme is widgit-ready and I prefer those that are. What I like about Nouk's site is that it is so beautifully personalized. I haven't shopped for a new theme recently, and I would love to find one that was easy for me to simify!

The template I use, the only editing it needed to make it look simmy, was just change the top picture, heheh :)

However the inner workings, to make it more like a CMS, took ages of searching and finding scripts, hacks, plugins, etc. Poo-eee :cry:

Even the side navigation bar did not unfold, needed some css for that. And I don't even know css. I still don't. It works though.

Heck, I would use a CMS if I could find some decent themes. You did a great job on that navigation, Nouk. Good work.

with k2 (and i assume most other wordpress themes) you can modify the html/css very hevily. a lot of the important stuff is in 'the loop' which you can get to via the theme editor. the k2 forums are VERY helpful, so using them and the wordpress support site thingo, you can basically do anything you want..
i think in a nutshell, i just figured all the crap i didn't want (search, comments, archives etc) and tried to find them in i think its theloop.php and deleted them! then its a heavily modified css file and there you have it..
i'm sorry, i'm not very helpful i know haha. its just a matter of looking closely through the html and deleting the shit you don't need. and there is sooo much shit you don't need in wordpress, but if you can wrangle it to do what you want, it's super awes!

to be perfectly honest also, i wonder if i'd be able todo it again, lol, it's been that long since i did it in the first place.. i dread upgrading my wordpress for this very reason, hahah...

I'm a plugin whore but the two I love the most are Paged Navigation (http://www.stuff.yellowswordfish.com/paged-navigation/) and Download Counter Lite (http://www.stuff.yellowswordfish.com/download-counter-lite/) both by Yellow Swordfish. He has several others too and a very helpful support forum.

WP Tiger Administration (http://orderedlist.com/wordpress-plugins/wp-tiger-administration/) makes the control panel (Dashboard) look pretty and WP Database Backup (http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/) is a life saver (for me who is always fucking things up, heh).

I think I have the theme all sorted now, and I've already become a plug in junkie! I even skinned the login screen, and I'm the only one who will ever see it. Now comes the fun part, re-uploading everything into new categories...

Still, this whole thing has been remarkably easy. I've spent most of my time fussing with the css style sheet, but really, it's a very easy way to put together a sims site. And I very much look forward to being able to update without having to manually add code to a dozen different pages.

I went through that too.. it's good to start with html and stuff, but it gets to a point when you've got so much volume that it takes up too much time to do it the hard way...

Are you using a CMS? It's really nice.

just a note to you guys thinking of using wordpress....the more plugins/scripts you use, the longer the pages take to load and the more cpu resources you use up so make sure you keep it as light as possible, and if you're limited on bandwidth, get a plugin that can help you monitor that.
Wordpress is better about cpu resources than phpbb or the like though.
I dont really have much experience with wordpress, but I read a bit when nouk was thinking of switching over to it to find out about how much it uses up.

If you're really worried about CPU usage you could install a plugin like WP-Cache (http://mnm.uib.es/gallir/wp-cache-2/).

I've never had an issue with CPU usage myself (27 plugins installed, 20 currently set to "active") but I'm going to install this plugin anyway.*

The fun stuff is:

- all your downloads will stay on a permanent post, wich can be linked to and will not change. Permalinks rule! (unless you delete or change it yourself)
- You can invite creators over, and give them different levels of priveledges. They can write their posts, upload their stuff themselves, and all you need to do is approve it, or if you know them better, they can just update themselves without doing damage to your site.
- plugins will make your website work like a cms
- you can tweak it to do allmost anything, and you can reduce cpu and bandidth usage with several plugins.
- it even has a few plugins that add a forum into the theme

It's just very nice :)

I think I've got about five plugins active so far, and since I'm not going to be using it for a lot of blogging or anything, I am fairly confident I won't keep adding them once I get things working how I want them.

I've actually looked at more than one CMS before-- Mambo, Joomla and the like-- and never really felt like they were right for what I wanted to do. I also didn't want a site that visually looked "blogish". I poked around at Nouk's site a bit, and was impressed with how Wordpress looked and worked. Once I played around with the theme, I'm even more pleased I decided to give it a shot. Now here's to hoping I don't bork it all to hell!

And thanks Samantha! I spent all of yesterday poking around in the bowels of CSS playing "whats this do?". I think it worked out okay :)

the thing i love most is being able to edit my html/css right there on the site, without having to use an editor and go back and re-upload and all that bullshit.

if anyone is using K2, here is the code for removing the comments (any mention of them, not just to say that comments are off.) it's as simple as commenting out the code that calls the comments:

(i know commenting out sometimes makes for sloppy code, but i'd rather comment something out and be able to bring it back if i want, than deleting it and being fucked later, haha)

A plain HTML site was fine for me for a long time, but now I'm totally lazy and want something that's easy to use. If I wasn't doing a lot of updating with downloads and all that crap, I probably wouldn't have switched either. Wordpress has its uses, but on a site that has fairly static information or doesn't need a lot of updates, then why bother?

For me, my site is a blog first and the Sims 2 related stuff second. I'm not a mesher or even a recolorerer, really. I recolored a few Maxis paintings with Photo Studio for a Bewitched themed house, someone on S2C asked me about them so I threw them all up together on my blog (after first trying out Googlepages and ohmygod I hate Googlepages).

In deference to others I put a site map up so that those confused could use it if they need to make sure they haven't missed any pages. I did that when I realised I have 30+ pages of html, and while I might know them like the back of my hand, maybe no one else does.  :lol:

You guys are lucky that you're completely happy with your layouts. I never am. I'm a lazy being by nature though, so I get to a certain point and stop messing, and just leave it till I'm either comfortable looking at it, or can't stand it and start over. I was just at that point with my site, after having been mostly comfortable with it for a year. I guess it probably has something to do with the fact that I was an avid web-designer for several years, until PHP refused to click with my brain, so I always look for the little flaws.

I think one of the fundamental things is colour.  If you can get colours you love, then from there, everything is good.  I looked and fiddled for ages with the colours on my site, and took a whole day to set up the banner image - with reference to Botticelli's Primavera - one of my favourite paintings.

Plus, I'm pretty impressed with the popup text on the rollover of my site buttons - at this point, it have to be that someone would pry that out of my cold dead hands.  :lol:
