Those are really nice and almost tempt me to swap my own icon with that of a more piratey persuasion. Perhaps I'll save a few in case the contentment with my current icon fades later on. But I suppose I shall remain a vampire pirate (if that is even possible).

They are not too big. A good quality chinchilla usually weights 800-1000 grams.
Here's me and one of my chinnies.

And this is my littlest chinnie, Monkeybuny. (don't mind my hair I hadn't gotten to the flat iron yet)

I know of a few people who breed them there, but not too many.
Texas is hot and humid, so it's not a great climate for them.
They have to be kept under 80 degrees.

I live in north-east Texas so breeders in Austin and Houston are a tad inaccessible.  I guess I could drive half way (about two hours) and they drive half way but.. meh.  Anyway, thank you for the links. ^^

And yes, Texas is hot and humid but it's that way outside!  We have air conditioning.

I saw some in a pet shop years ago. I think I've seen some at Traders Village too. They also had sugar gliders. I want a sugar glider, but I don't really feel like taking care of anything.

I have 5 sugargliders and 5 chinchillas + 3 cats.

Sugargliders are a fantastic pet, but they take up a ton of time. They have a complex diet too. You have to give them fresh fruits and veggies it can get expensive to keep them.

Chinchillas are much easier to care for. You should see them take their dust bath. It's the cutest thing.

Down to 3 rats and 2 cats here. I will probably not get more rats because the 2 to 3 year life span lets me really get to love them just in time to see them  die.

Well, I did have hamsters, and they are sweet, cute little critters.  But yeah, both Nezumi when he was still alive, and Ruby Snowfall, my current ratling, were very smart.

You can leave her cage open to feed her and she just waits.  She's tried to teach the kitties how to groom, and she's adjusted well to pethood.

She was originally going to be food for my snake last winter, but Honeybun just wasn't in the mood for food, going into hibernation, so Ruby survived and became family.  She was a feeder rat when we got her, and wasn't used to people at all, but she's very social now.

My rats chase my cats around the house. It is extremely amusing to see. A big cat going "WTF?" and backing away then running away. The rat going, "Hey, what are are you? Ya wanna be pals? Come back!".

I didn't like rats at first, then my mom get a few and and they are so great. They are incredible little animals.
I bought 2 male dwarf hampsters and suddenly I had 10 baby hampsters! It was not amusing. They were cute.

Post by: SoggyFox on 2007 June 01, 01:05:12
I've had, dogs, cats, a ferret, rats, a mouse, hamsters, guinea piggles....a snake....
I want a fox but while they are allowed as pets in Florida and Alabama, they aren't here.  Considered pest animals so its fine to ranch them and trap them [ trapping is kinders ;.;]

They are the only actually domesticated animal that is still widely considered wild that I know of.  But if they are bred for certain traits successfully, then that makes them as domesticated as a cat.

Sorry for the mini rant, but I so want a fox.

Current ferret owner. Have owned carious small furry critters *dwarf rabbit, lop rabbit, gerbil, mice, and, the oddest, a mole) and cats.

Ferrets are still considered wild in California, parts of New York and a few other places. Which is ridiculous, as they lack any kind of survival skills if dumped into the wild. They are fearless, which is a bad trait for an animal that weighs less than six pounds.

Mine has been known to doink up to Very Large Barking Dogs and try to make friends (not that I would have allowed it, if I knew...NOTE TO SELF: do not have any more irresponsible roommates who like to let the ferrets out while you are at work and then NOT WATCH THEM, damn it). He's lucky he hasn't become a Scooby Snack.

Title: Pirate Avatars for newbies
Post by: SoggyFox on 2007 June 01, 05:24:39
Which is just plain stupid, since pet ferrets are a cross between what, european ferrets and polecats?  Or something like that.

And I forgot my bunnie and my duck....bad me - and my bunny was fiercesome, she played with a dog, they were friends, and if the dog got to frisky, she'd hop up and pop her on the nose with those big feet.

She was a full grown variety of rabbit, not one of the dwarf sized breeds.

I once had a pet duck.  It was messy and noisy and it stayed in the bathtub.

And then the next day we had duck for dinner.  So, I'm not sure how much of a pet it actually was.

Mine lived with my sister's on my parents' lake, and was eventually joined by a wild duck.

My father used to tell us evil stories from when he was a wee lad.  They lived in London during the Blitzkrieg and after a particularly awful strafing run, there was no food coming into their part of the city.  So they were forced to eat their pet rabbits.  And my grandparents didn't tell him!  He discovered it some time later when he went to play with his bunny and it was gone!  Ick.

No, their fur is very thick and dense. If they get overheated they cannot cool themselves off. Their fur is so thick that if a flea were to get into the fur the flea would suffocate.
They wont explode, but they will overheat and die. It's really sad.

Found this a minute ago.

"Chinchillas ARE NOT like other small furry critters that can survive high heat and humidity! Whereas other furries may find it difficult but will survive, high temperatures will downright KILL a chinchilla. This is because chinchilla fur density differs significantly from that of other animals, they have the highest fur density of any land animal in the world: 80-100 hairs per follicle (more than 20,000 hairs per square cm),  while most fur-bearing animals have only 4-8 hairs per follicle."

http://www.chincare.com/HealthLifestyle/HealthLifestyle.htm

In school a my biology teacher would have us close our eyes, then he would place a chinchilla pelt, fur side down in our palm. Not one of us could feel when he did it. Very soft little critters.

I'm kinda amazed they can handle the richer air of being so close to sealevel.

The fact the guy that brought them here from Chile was so conscientious about taking a year to let them acclimate impresses me.

And I think that even if I could keep them cool enough, they would have a stroke - I live in a very expressive household.

The story is really great.
Bowens (http://www.bowenschinchillas.com/) actually have the chinchilla museum at their ranch. It's not too far from me. One of these days I'm going to make an appointment and get out their. They are one of the best breeders of chinchillas in the world.

You also have to be very very careful about the humidity with chinchillas, because they can get fungus from having wet/damp fur. If they get wet it takes days for them to dry out.

The worst written words since "It was a dark and stormy night..."

"Satan sucks, but you're the best
Holy smokes you past the test
When I'm with you I feel blessed
My chinchilla
Satan sucks, but you're okay
Since you came things go my way
Here tomorrow, here today
My chinchilla
One day I woke up and everything was beautiful
My troubles had all fallen out the window
Satan sucks but you're divine
Sitting pretty by my side
Oh my oh my, my chinchilla"
