I actually think they plan sever troubles, because it gives them the air that "Wow, they much really need that subscription money, because gosh, they can't even afford servers that'll stay up more than a few hours a day!"
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Why attribute to malice what can easily be explained by stupidity?

Or greed...the new "server" is probably code for Thomas's second home.

all lost money to TSR and other paysites, especially if the new Eula stays the way it is and everyone and their dog may modify and share stuff.

When has TSR paid any attention to the EULA?  I'm sure they will keep doing what they do with Sims 3.

I beginning to wonder if Dot keeps posting this inane tutorial not so much to prove her point, but because she likes the attention she gets from us everytime she posts one.  I can see her going "the pirates are talking about ME", posting the stupid thing again, and rushing over her to read our responses so she can feel that special atwat-ish tingle.

The sheeple response are very sad....

EDIT:  I couldn't stand it.  I posted a response encouraging the person to look for free sites.  I tried to be very positive and I even said that TSR has some good free creators (they do, you just have to spend hours looking for them).  I took a screen shot, but won't post it unless my response gets deleted and people would like to see it).

kenmtl Not just Thomas, but any staff member who has access to their unencrypted user passwords.  I believe Delphy said they told him they would be encrypting those in the future.  Well, let's hold them to that.  Let's demand they tell their users that they have encrypted the passwords.  That will let people know that passwords were not encrypted previously.  If they don't make an announcement about encrypted passwords, let's keep asking about it, and say "Are passwords still unencrypted and thus not secure?".

This makes me wonder.  All we have right now is Thomas's promise  that they are going to encrypt them.  But how do we verify that, other than Thomas saying "Yep, they're encrypted now".  I mean, I wouldn't expect them to make an offical announcement on the site because that would be admitting to the sheeple that they weren't secure in the first place.  And yeah, he could tell Delphy or someone else, but that's basically still just his word.

I did a bit of looking around about this.  That does seem to mean that's what's going on - your password isn't encrypted - which means that surely TSR can go into the database and find anything - all of the people with access to the database can do this. So how likely is it that they were hacked, then?  Someone hacked them rather than someone just went and had a look - likelihood - Roll Eyes

Thank you.  Luckily, its not a password I use anymore, but it is important to get the word out to community about this possible security breach.  Too bad there is no reliable way to inform the TSR sheeple.

May I suggest that we ignore johan/thomas/emptyheaded TSR troll as all they are doing is using a time old TSR tactic--distract us with their stupidity to keep us from talking about the topic at hand.  To recap the important points:

1.  Shakeshaft is a thief
2.  The security of TSR user passwords has been called into question with the recent hacking of Buggyboo's MTS2 account.
3.  Just after the security of user passwords was called into question, TSR sent out an unsolicated e-mail to former subscribers that listed their passwords as part of the email.

Sorry, I would still really like an answer to my question.  Most sites that I've dealt with that collect money in some form (paypal, etc) usually require me to jump through some hoops, then reset my password, send me the new randomlly generated password and tell me I should change it to something more secure as soon as I log in.

Somewhat back to the orginal topic.  I recently got an email from TSR begging me to renew my longtime defunct subscription (They even offered 30% off...oooooh Roll Eyes.)  Anyways, this part of the email caught my attention given the current issue:

Obviously, I've edited out my info.  But it did list my old password.   Hopefully someone more tech minded I can interpet this, but does this mean that my password was not encrypted?  Or is there a way for them to decrypt my password and send it back to me?

Not sure if you've seen this gem yet, but the latest "contest" at TSR has just been posted.

http://www.thesimsresource.com/articles/competition

The title of the contest:  TSR's Hunt the Booty Competition!

Huh  These people have the worst sense of timing imaginable...

Hey would could be like TSR, take this out of context, and when sheeple say the booty is illegal, point to this contest and say "Oh no, TSR totally supports the booty.  Look they even had a contest to honor us!"
25  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Re: New Paysite: Architecture Sims on: 2009 March 10, 01:56:14
Not to rain on people's parade, but I do think there was a reason that there wasn't an already stickied paysite list.  I believe the original reasoning was that it was too much like promoting those sites.  You were supposed to post a new thread, we could talk about it for a bit, then let the thread die a natural death.  Then if someone wanted to see if the crew knew about the site they could first check the booty, then do a search of old threads.  That way there's not a big clickable sign saying "Paysites Here!"

If I'm wrong about this, I'm sure someone whose been here longer will correct me (please use kitty macros!).  Anyways, I don't know if people still see it this way as plenty more people know about the booty and PMBD now and its getting to the point where some of these posts (not this one) are more like fangirl requests rather than people interested in shutting the site down.

I didn't know you can't sell sewn items from a major pattern, but then I don't follow patterns either, not outside of stitch ones.  I love designing my own stuff.

Yeah, but different company's react differently to it.  I guess Simplicity is a bit like EA in that the turn a blind eye to a lot of it while McCall/Butterick are pretty quick with the cease and desisit letters as well as contacting web hosts and having sites shut down.
27  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Re: TSR Sharing your infomation! on: 2009 February 16, 22:55:37
That was the point I was trying to make-I should have added the illegal part so it didn't get misunderstood! Of course there is NO problem with making money off a hobby that is NOT trademarked by someone else (as well as based off other people's work). I am a cellist and I play for fun and I can also play for an event and get paid for it. It really is a hobby for me though-so yeah no issues there! But when you are a violator of the EULA that's when there's an issue with making money off a hobby. Because let's face it we play the sims for fun as a hobbyTongue Thanks for pointing this out so my post could be clearer!

No problem.  I just wanted to clarify the point because one anti-paysite argument I see tossed around every so often is "it's just a hobby and I shouldn't have to pay for it".  Well, I don't know of hobby you don't invest some money in.  Even in the case of sims, you pay money to EA.

And to everyone who else whose replied--I'm not trying to defend FA's or paysites.  What they do is shitty.  But I think my comparisons stand because in all three cases you are dealing with copyright issues.  Had I made copies of bestselling novels, then what I would have been doing was illegal because it would have been profiting off of someone elses work.  Had my friend used commeical patterns from the big three (Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick), she would have been breaking the law.  In fact, there have been "professional" (I use the term very loosely)  seamstresses who sell their work online who have been busted for using commeical patterns.

As Darqstar pointed out, if the FA's wanted to put their "talents"* to use making money then they have legitimate avenues open to them such as meshing on sites like TurboSquid.

*And I know the scope of their talents probably wouldn't make this feasible for most of them, but in theory if they had talent then they could find more legimate outlets than TSR.

I would never sit here on my ass and pass out hobby crap for money! Angry

I've come out of lurkdom to make a point and hopeful keep the pmbd arguments on track.  There is nothing wrong with making money off of a hobby.  I do miniature houses as a hobby (big surprise why I like The Sims).  In the past, I've made money off my hobby by making hand inked and illustrated books.  And it was perfectly legal to do so because they were my own orginal creations.  Had I copied off of real life books that were currently covered under copyright, then no, it wouldn't be legal.

I have a friend in my stay-at-home mom group who is an excellent seamstress and makes money on the side doing costume comissions.  What's she's doing is legal because she does her own designs and drafts her own patterns.  If she used commerical patterns, then she'd be doing something illegal because you cannot create those outfits for sale.

So I just wanted to remind everyone, don't hate the FA's because they're stay-at-home moms trying to make money off a hobby.  Hate them because they make their money illegally by violating the EULA and copyright law.

Well, that review put me firmly on the not getting it side of the fence.  As someone who plays primarily as a house builder/decorator Sims 3 seems to have very little to offer at launch.  If the mod community figures out a way to do custom textures, I might check it out but for now my money will probably be better spent elsewhere.
30  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Re: TSR Sharing your infomation! on: 2008 December 19, 17:30:17
i'm soo not buying TS3!
i still can't get over the FA's invitations to that TS3 event...Best meshers,my ass! considering that half of them use 3D models and the other half make crappy content...

Meshers?  EA doesn't want meshers.  They don't want people to create new objects for the game.  Everyone who is invited is probably going to get nothing more than a lesson on how to apply textures to the models that EA provides.  New meshes are too much competition for the Stuff Packs.
