181  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / Numenor's Opinion of pay vs free on: 2007 August 23, 23:42:53
Just for funzies, you can start reading at the post linked below.  It was Numenor's fellow modder Inge that brought his payfile to Hec's attention in the first place in a discussion about Misleading Links to 'free' downloads.  Not that Inge's points are invalid or anything, but that she mentioned discussing them with Numenor made me remember it:

http://phorum.mustnotbenamed.com/viewtopic.php?p=38411&highlight=#38411

It was this comment specifically that lodged like a splinter in my brain:

"I have a feeling he's actually got that file there to see what happens as much as because he wants the money. I had a strong "devils advocate" feeling when he was debating it at the FFSS"

So...I'm paranoid.  Because they're out to get me.

I respect skill, I respect generosity, I respect work.  I respect others who have alternate or differing views because that educates, I respect those who give enough of a damn to see beyond themselves because that can matter more than anything sometimes.  I see all of those things in this community, here, MATY, Insim, MST2, any number of sites and forums, yes, even the official site has a great number of people who do all those things on a regular basis.  They cannot be discounted.

All I want is for those to whom I show respect to show me a bit in return.  It's not so much to ask, common courtesy.  Don't have to do anything except not call me a moron for existing, which is what initally came out of this Numenor thing for me.

And yes, I'm really that easy.

Numenor's file should stay in the Booty as long as any amount of money is required to obtain it, for that is the established criteria and it's no big secret that no one is immune.  If he cannot see the principle behind this and that it is the fault of paysites who abuse other gamers that caused it to happen this way, then he's quite out of the loop and needs to catch up.

I will not insult his intelligence by concluding he's merely on an ego trip.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he hasn't experienced what too many of us have at the hands of certain paysites.  I cannot know beforehand that when I give over actual funds to a paysite that I will not be cheated somehow.  There is no check and balance and it's gotten well out of line.  I wish paysites would police themselves and rein in the worst of them, but that will never happen.

The Booty is drastic, but what else has made the most impact and raised the most awareness?

Saying 'please' certainly didn't.

Ooh, Paden - check your downloads for a buyable CAS backdrop by Targa at MST2; it wasn't updated for Seasons and can cause jump bug problems with some of the Seasons water feature deco things.  If you have it, it comes in 2 colors; Clean Installer will show you one highlighted red, that's the one you need to ditch.

Other than that, I had no problems at all with any downloads.

Seasons is cool.  Snow makes my vid card zap out, but the rainstorms I could watch for hours.  I think they did the weather up right.   Cheesy

In the corporate world, it is ALWAYS about the money... always.

See, now I thought there was some rocket science involved, but according to Mr. Florin there isn't, so...

Damn you, EA!  Crushing my reality again!

Saints preserve us, they make ungodly sums of money, don't they?

Wouldn't it be lovely if Sims 3 had a built-in custom content maker feature, which is what the community has been begging for since the beginning?

YES! I remember talk at MTS2 in the early days and thought that it was a great idea back then. It wouldn't even have to be built into the game as far as I'm concerned. Just an add on like Homecrafter.

All 8 CC tools are part of the actual game. Including growing/changing hair. Body parts, etc...You can even make your own custom colors and textures for everything from within the game. There isn't a separate program for making CC if that's what your asking?

There aren't any for object making, HG.  Or meshing.  Edit:  that come with the game, I mean.  Sorry in advance if I misunderstand your question.

I don't see it as condoning paysites or denouncing filesharing or doing anything but making sure the EA weinerdogs are well out of any fight about it.  It's just ironic that the previous EULAs (for these two things that have changed EULAs) meant nothing before but everything now.  It sounds like an admission of guilt or at least acknowledgement of violating those EULAs in the past.

But quite possibly any EULA is going to be the least of a pay for content site's worries - for me this has always been a consumer issue rather than a legal issue.  It's quite possible that customers will now very much expect more from paysites in regards to customer service than ever before.  People are much more aware of the shenanigans some sites get up to, so the true butthurt may just be beginning there, likely expanding into site vs. site if everyone's going to get deadly serious about violating each other's terms of use and such.  The slavering reactions from pro-pay posters I saw over at Sc2 were a real turn-off even if I weren't pro-free, and like the attacks on MST2 finances, may very well drive people to support a freesite more than ever.

I think paysites may have had it better when they just had to suffer people bitching about them in forums and offering them ways to go free.  *shrug*

I doubt that the mods actually download and look at the sims.  I could be wrong though.
I know that the 5 I put for upload have Peggy's pay skins and they are very detailed.

To the best of my knowledge, the only ways an asset (sim or lot) will be deleted from your page are due to low ratings (they do cull the exchange every couple weeks, I think) or because it was reported by several people for having inappropriate or broken content.  Anatomically correct skins will get yanked, but only if reported enough times.

Legacy challenge = take one sim (Generation 1) of your own making, straight out of CAS, plop them on a lot, have them breed with any non-playable, choose an heir, heir breeds, repeat as necessary until you reach the 10th generation.  No cheating; heirs must live and die on the same lot.  Sims can move out but not back in.  (there are rules and variations at LegacyChallenge.com but I'm condensing).

I finished one...last year?  Right before NL came out.  Did stories for the whole thing on my simpage.  It was a fun project with long stretches of boring (to play); stories (and nice feedback from other players) helped keep me at it til I finished.

All those generations on one lot usually buggers it at some point and you'll have to move them.  That in itself was quite the challenge, overcoming/solving glitches.

Pics always helped me tell the story (that was always going on in my head).  Use the TAB key to get Cameraman mode for better pics.  The controls are:  W/S, E/Q, Z/X, A/D (maneuvering the camera); SPACEBAR for cycling thru sim selection (you lose your control panel in Cameraman mode); P for pausing and unpausing; and I never remember these right - Home/End and PgUp/PgDn for going up/down floors and/or putting walls up or down.  Easy enough to figure out once you fool with it.

And definitely tell the story the way you want to, it's the only way.   Don't worry about the pics you don't have and just work with the ones you do/will have.

Sorry for continuing the derailment.   Smiley

There are many fansites who go to these Fan Days. However, there are so many that Maxis doesn't invite the same ones all the time. They rotate which ones they invite so there will be times when a favorite isn't included.

I flagged too.  That whole chatlog thing seems awfully familiar, I think copied from that ridiculous Truth thing plastered all over a couple of months ago.

Seems to be a thread closing tactic.  I went back & forth with Brisbane yesterday on the deleted thread and s/he/it just kept after the Delphy thing.  Now doing the same in the above thread - which, btw, has been edited by a mod there but is still standing (the Dina person sniped at me, I sniped back, those posts are gone now).

Intersting this thread is still there with the posts they haven't deleted, tho.

What I would say is that EA is playing both sides - the letters are undeniable, and EA is keeping all the fan base happy.

Didn't make me very happy.  In fact, if I may vent, I'm getting more and more pissed at EA all the time.  Excluding the largest free FANsite in the whole damn community from FANday just adds to the sludgepile of 'Yuck' I'm feeling towards EA, of which I'm no longer a FAN.
195  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / To Those with Legal Understanding, or Even an Opinion.. on: 2007 July 25, 14:38:20
I'm simple and idealistic, but EA could make a statement in support of their customer base (and their EULA) loud and clear by just revamping their fansite listing on the official site to include only free sites.  The end. *shrug*

Might be some squawking from pay to play quarters, but they could continue to exist, just without official site recognition.

It would be somewhat fitting to drive paysites into operating underground, as filesharing once was.

/idealistic babble.
