121  The Pirate Ship / ARR! /  Wudja LOOK at this SITE?!!!! on: 2007 April 21, 06:11:25
As some one who runs a website and hosts others for free on my domain, at my own cost, this really shits me off.

The amount of time, effort and energy I put into my site, my creations, I come to lothe drama whores and greedy people.

Marilu, your content is not good enough to be even thinking of asking for payment. It's your hobby, I don't need to sponsor you.

My hosting will be coming due soon, I'm not going to ask anyone or even put a voluntary donation button up, because it's my hobby, no one else should pay. What makes you think otherwise? Seriously?

[ who for the record, is Skadi of SublimeSims.net and Marilu, you're welcome to stop by to how a real free .php sims site is run  ]

Works fine for me with firefox, just added my 2c to the guestbook. I fell in love with Linda's artwork back in my BG2/NWN days, and was really happy to find out she was creating for TS2. Regardless of how her art came to be, I still love it, and what's an artist without some controversy?

Cannot believe 2 for u did this, it just stupid, as if no one would pick it up.

I wasn't planning on getting  Skadi to snarf them, that kinda defeats the challenge.

But I was gunna donate to the bluesoup fund to acquire those for sharing.

Actually their free stuff is crap... the pay stuff is not bad. lotsa detail in the pictures... [looks all innocent] I'd have to see it in game to be sure though.

Thank you for your offer, but I unfortunetly already paid for this site for the month. If your offer is still valid before my next payment, I might take you up on it.
Thanks again.

Its letting me download their stuff.
I called my friend who I work with. She runs sublime sims.

She made them this offer:

Hi.
I can see your coping a lot of flack for your donation set at the moment. I have an offer for you. Sublime Sims will host your site for free with a subdomain. We'll give you 5GB of server space and 100GB of bandwidth per month. This is negotiable further down the track as you grow. The catch? No donation sets. Vashti and I have been in the community for 6+ years. We can even give you some pointers.
This takes care of the need to have donate files, and the site is still yours to run however you want.
-Skadi

Be interesting to see what happens next.

*snort* if they think that they are not a paysite they are more deluded than I thought.

I commented in the guestbook. went for the nice constructive kinda stuff, but put my url as here, and made the point that the community isn't a money mine.

Lets see how she goes....

129  The Pirate Ship / ARR! / I smell bullshit on: 2007 January 10, 01:36:44
I know people who are somewhat tight with Ginger, and her words were "we couldn't come close to offering her what TSR does."

Windkeeper was willing to move, for the right price.

What I find interesting is the sense of entitlement that exists with paysite creators. Its getting less and less "bandwidth" and more and more "I made this so I deserve to be paid for it, cause it took hours .

BTW - Blue - Inside info:

Sapphire Sims recently tried to entice Windkeeper away from TSR, but they couldn't come close to affording her, she is definitely keen on the bucks. Also if TSR really really likes a creator they will offer upto US $200 for them to close their old site. This may not apply to everyone, like Suzy's not exclusive, so maybe they don't deem her worthy of as much money. But greed plays bigtime in some FA's motivation.

I got up to 900Gb, and at the moment last month we pushed out all of 17GB.
I for a big time creator like you Nouk I'm prepaired to say: how much do you need/want?

My only issue is loosing access to meshes and the like, or upsetting the creators I have on my site. While I am ready to go loud and proud, other creators on my site are a little more introverted. I use a different nic here out of respect to them, rather than to the offending pay sites.

I'm tempted to offer someone free hosting on my domain.
You'd get your subdomain, 5GB hdd space and 100GB transfer per month.
No interference from my site, only catch - gotta be free, no donate button no nothing. Host is prepaid for a further 18mths.

Drop me a PM if anyone is interested...

I've pulled all his content (all 4 items) from my game in disgust.
I mean there is such a thing at TMI...
Particularly when your in the sims community, which is by large a PG13 kinda place.

Can you see it now?

Mummy, that place I donated to with your credit card, well mummy, he was finally able to buy a used jockstrap. Isn't that great mummy? maybe we can donate again next month mummy?

Yeah, NO.

I have a package with siteground, an american host for all of $5 per month inc domain. I get 900GB transfer each month. We found our host after about 1 hr of research and going to places like rate my host. There are several hosts who are now even offering bigger bandwidth allocations, for maybe a dollar more. Our host has 99.9% uptime, and we have not had a single outage yet.

If my site went donation, it would be like 10 or 20 cents each. Not to mention it would be a cold day in hell for me not to be able to afford our hosting even with exchange rates.

Now my site is a little quiet at the moment, knocking on average 50GB a month, last couple of months its been a little slower cause we're all busy in RL.

Now, for me it leaves 2 options in regards to those who should be destroyed.
Option 1: they are idiots and got locked into a dud package
Option 2: they are greedy and trying to live off the community.

I wonder which one applies to most people?

I mean, how much bandwidth could they really be using?
