Title: wicked sims & hosted sites temporarily offline
Post by: sherrie on 2007 June 19, 03:37:37
Due to an attack on the sites, wicked sims and all its 17 hosted free sites:
Adored Reality, Dour Sim, eXpresSims, WS Finds, Sims2Graveyard, GLAMstuf, LaPink, MySimSite, Nostalgic Sims, OohLaLa Sims, Pernille's Pages, Provocative Pixie, PoisonPinkLemons, Sims2Crave, SherrieSim, SIMply Vogue, and Wicked Sims are now offline for the time being.

Please take a look at this page, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sent a message to Jessica yesterday offering help but haven't heard anything. I clicked on the link you gave, Sherrie, and am shown a Hostican page stating "It seems your account is currently using too much CPU / Memory time."

My offer of help still stands. I just need to know what/where/how.  :)

yes, the attacks are still in progress, and its just taken the page she just put up offline.

basically its a DDos attack, they are running a programme attacking the server with many ips. Unfortunatly this has taken the one remaining page off.

all I can say is someone must be making a hell of a lot of money, to go to these lengths to protect their 'business'

I just checked my email (should have before I said anything here, lol) and there was a note from Jessica there.

I think this is totally craptacular.

Does the attack appear to be random (like all sites from your hosting company, as an example) or targeted specifically to Wicked Sims?  Because the timing seems a bit too good to be a coincidence.

That's something that only Jessica could answer.

I did put a notice up on my forum explaining briefly what's happening and linking to the Downtime.html page.

all sites within the wicked sims network. jessica says it started with wicked sims, then onto mangos and then all her hosted sites. The attack stopped about 1 hour ago, but she expects it will pick up again. it seemed to be a programme which attacked each of the sites in turn.

Well if it hasn't attacked any other sites hosted (bar the Sims 2 ones) by the company providing the hosting and domains, then it's more than likely an attack from a very sour grape; maybe someone on WickedSims (which is started from) has ticked someone off and they're geting their own back?

Title: wicked sims & hosted sites temporarily offline
Post by: Doursim on 2007 June 19, 11:58:34
I think that an aforementioned post eluded to the fact that this attack comes directly after notice of Wicked Sims policy change to include pay meshes/objects in their uploads.  The policy had been around for a few weeks before the announcement appeared HERE, but drawing attention on PMBD would defiantly attract greater negative attention.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and accuse a TSR groupie.  From the sounds of it, Jessica was attacked first, then Mango, sherrie... seeing a pattern?  I would suspect that the rest of the sites that were attacked were an attempt to throw people off scent.

Pescado mentioned that someone had tried the same thing to this server (no surprise here), and also to Nouk a month or so back.  It may not be the same person but one never knows.

Karma is like physics.  For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Or, put more simply, who ever is doing this is going to find it backfiring in a rather spectacular way.

I'll just put in a few words with Nemesis, she's good with this sort of thing. :D

It's funny the same thing happened to me a few months ago. Some rumours reached me that someone was trying to take noukiesims2 offline, and I passed it off as bullshit.

Seems it was not so.

This is just the absolutely shittiest thing I have ever heard of. I mean it is one thing to bitch, grip, moan and complain about freesites, but to actively target their site to take it down by means of cyber terrorism is just absolutely ridiculous. I wish people would grow the fuck up. This is so damned high school it is not even funny. It reminds me of Rat threatening to do the same shit to us here. So damned childish then and now. AND what message are they sending out...

"If you can't take someone down legally, then illegally is OK."

Great concept to be teaching our children in this day and age.

Is there not a way that her company can trace these attacks? Someone long ago told me that while hard, it could be done. Once traced and identified, legal action would certainly follow and charges brought up... And maybe, just maybe, some dumb son of a bitch/stupid cunt paysite owner would be going down... I would so love to see that... I hate hackers... Pass the rum, please... I mean, pass the rum NOW!!! Arrrrrr!

http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3A+DOS+ATTACK

A type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers.

Who makes that much money? TSR.
I've done some math and have realized that if even 1/4 of their membership spends even $10 with them during the course of a year they're making $2 million dollars or more per year.
And they're making it off of artists donating their items to their site and some even paying them for the priviledge of donating their work.
Sucktacular.

(I know, I sound like a broken record on that fact but it really ticks me off...)

Not with new and improooved words like that - the more inventive the insults, the more the fun.  Plus there's like 200+ pages devoted to particular sites - it's not as if we don't go round and round like broken records every time, trying to categorise our rage

ZOmg! I can't believe how low some people will go...!

Arrr! If I wasn't such a lazy pirate, I'd use a couple of tricks I know and let vengeance have its say! Yarrr!

-----
How Ironic - I am moderator on a security site, and I felt like linking to  some sims2 sites I really love in my sig - but I refrained from it and didn't link, because I know many sims2 sites don't really focus on security - and the site I am moderator on draws many vicious teenagers. LOL

Actually, it might be that someone is just doing this because they can, not because they care about the paysite vs freesite discussion. Although, it is more likely some paysite owner has recruited some black hat to do some work - they certianly have the money. And I wouldn't be surprised if they have the connections aswell. Pffft! I hate black hats.

I'm mostly just a lurker.  I find the discussions on this forum quite revealing about the Sims community.  And yes, maybe I do tend to watch to many conspiracy theory-related tv shows--but just to put out there for consideration:

There has been one site owner who did threaten black hat activities.  Of course, now everything on her site is free-but she did jump into bed with the TSR "community" project. Could her going free have been a play to defer suspicion while she continued to plan and plot in the background with other paysites?

Oh well, my two cents.  Back to my corner to lurk more.

Title: wicked sims & hosted sites temporarily offline
Post by: Zazazu on 2007 June 19, 21:41:20
Oooh! Who? Inquiring uninformed minds want to know!

I'm not a big conspiracy theorist, and I think pointing a big ole' finger at one person/site without evidence is too much of a leap, but the likelihood of this not being done by a paysite or someone(s) associated with a paysite seems quite low. Things have most certainly been coming to a head this last month.

The link is this: http://paysites.mustbedestroyed.org/hate/retailsims.html

As for the black hat bit:

Quote
What is a black hat?  It is a type of hacker that does not operate within the boundaries of the law.  A black hat is often a malicious hacker who seeks to tamper with and / or exploit a program, file, server or other media (hardware or software) for personal gain or just for the fuck of it.  White hats, by comparison, are "good guy" hackers (who work to improve security).  Grey Hats fall in between.

The leader of the group who is stealing files suggested to me that I did not know what a black hat was when I mentioned (repeatedly) that I would love to find one to fuck up the files he's serving with some very nasty viruses.  Unfortunately for him I know very well what black hats are.  My husband, depending on your perspective, is one. If my husband did not have a high security government job this would not be a discussion and the files on that site would have been infected with a series of viruses designed to destroy a computer - not merely correctable by a format and reinstall.  Once he went legit I had to remove myself from any and all contacts with 'undesirable' types and most foreigners.  J.M. Pescado and everyone who downloads those stolen files should consider themselves lucky that this didn't happen a few years earlier  Than again, you never know when an old friend may crawl out of the woodwork or when a bunch come to town for a Black Hat Convention (I can damn near throw a rock at that hotel from my balcony).  I can't stop J.M. Pescado or those like them but I can fuck with stolen goods all I want.  Consider yourself warned.

My take on this particular person, however, is that she's full of shit and the threat is empty. Heck, her hubby probably works at McDonald's.

Who was the one in control of Retail Sims?

And sheesh, what a rant. I love these sorts of things, especially since it's they who are doing the illegal thing, and we who have received official word from EA that redistributing paysite content in a free manner is fine.

I've never seen a PMBD/similar supporter get as self-righteous or generally pissy as a paysite owner who has been thwarted.

Thank you for visiting

Unfortunately, we are experiencing some major problems.

We are trying to work on a solution at this time, and our host is investigating the issue.

I am waiting to hear from the host to figure out if they can solve the problem or not. It appears that even though all of the sites have been down and redirected to this page for the past two days or so, the databases (for the forums) are still being queried an insane amount of times, and ramping up our CPU usage. In addition to that, random IP's from around the world were trying to access pages/files that never existed continuously (several files per second) which seems to have finally ceased earlier today. Banning/Blocking those IP's did no good, I tried to do that for several hours Monday afternoon, it was pointless.

Even with all of the sites down, our CPU usage peaked today at 15%. So the tech support team is now investigating -- I finally got through to a live person lol he sounded pretty cute too, anyways, I am waiting to hear back from them. I am hoping they can resolve the issue and block whoever is causing the problems so that things can go back to normal.

I am still working on Plan B just in case, but at this point in time there really isn't anything you guys can do. I appreciate all the emails of support and assistance, and I am completely surprised by how many emails I've gotten. You guys are amazing.

For more information, keep checking this page for updates, email me: jessica@wickedsims.com, or check PMBD. In the meantime, please visit other great free sites like Noukie Sims, Betsy's Little Sim Shoppes, Parsimonious, and MTS2.

Update from wicked sims, quoted incase the page gets brought down again

Heather.  HChangeri or something like that.  Some crazy woman in her thirties or so who should know better but clearly doesn't.  She ran off to Turbosquid to sell meshes of cubes or something in an attempt to stick it to the pirates.

Or something.  She also had a Myspace that had her delusional ranting, but I don't know if it's still up.  Should check the threads on her.

Frankly, I love gossips, but I don't think that TSR is behind this attack. Thomas is evil, yes, but not an idiot (not till this extent, at least, lol).

I imagine Thomass more on the line of trying to build his own niche, maybe trying to obtain a sort of licence by EA, stuff like that. I mean, he's a businessman, and businessmen don't invest money to simply annoy people, with so dubious effect in the long run.

An attack like that seems more a work of some exalted minion, obviously idiot, with a distorted moral and a very little perception of reality (or none at all).

I saw that page before. I was going through the links of some sites because I was bored, and one link led be to wickedsims' network.
I also truly hope the culprit is caught.
But on the other hand, this is a good chance for us. PMBD [and SFV?] has [have] started the ball rolling. Someone out there is getting scared enough to attack, like a cornered cat. In the short time, this attack is awful. But in the long run, I think this is going to do good...

I suck at explaining. I hope you got the general idea. :X

Also, I do wonder if there is a way to translate back from pirate lingo...?

Update June 22 630pm PST:

Without my permission, the host undid the redirects while I was offline today, so we would go back to normal--and without fixing the CPU usage issues. Which means at any moment they could force me to upgrade or close the account. Now they are claiming (in email) that it's my problem and I need to fix it. How can I fix it when the problem was more than likely due to the attacks? Blah. Anyways I am resetting the redirects up (which is why you are now seeing this page) and I guess I will need to call tech support yet again and hopefully I will get through to a live person. Will update this page with more info when I have it.

So now I am back to being bummed.

To be honest I haven't a clue except it would be likely to have been through the forum rather than database or ftp, because they wouldn't have known whose attachments were whose that way and probably would have wiped the lot, and not via a top level admin account or my own forum stuff would have been wrecked too.   So the entry point was probably through a global moderator level account, which did have authority to edit the attachment settings for their own level and below.

Livejournal got hit too? That's strange that so many sites would get hit in such a short ammount of time.

I could see the attacks on Xanga and LJ being related. Maybe even Progressive (unless it's not the car insurance site). But WickedSims? It all makes me wonder who else has been getting hit.

It might just be some kid who learned a new trick and is having fun going around and smashing random sites. An adult probably wouldn't bother. I think.

I dont think the problem is getting to a live op, i think the problem is getting anyone to actually do what they say theyre going to do or what you expect they should do?
I mean she said the live op told her they were going to investigate, then they ignore her for awhile and when she asks how the investigations going they tell her its her problem--because they dont want to investigate? Or they are hoping she wont be able to fix the problem so they can force her to upgrade?
Either way its shittastic service, and unfortunately, is to be expected from shared hosting.
I hope if she leaves she can get a refund

Livejournal got hit too?

They theorized that it was due to Russians protesting the mentions of DPNI.

Quote
Just a few hours it was impossible to post messages that contained the following links: “ru_nbp”, “nbp_ru” [NBP is the National Bolshevik Party], “ru_politics” и “dрni” [DPNI is the Movement Against Illegal Immigration] (the last one is written with the Russian “p” because Latin script is still not being let through). It doesn’t matter what my attitude toward NBP or DPNI is. What’s important is that a purposeful pressure on democracy is taking place and the citizens’ constitutional right of free access to information is being limited.

For more on what that is, GoogWikiHoo for you.

If you care, of course.

Update June 23 1145pm PST:

Although I havent gotten ahold of a live person @ the host, I have some news for you. Nouk and I will be sharing a server from Kathy@Insim. She will be doing all the tech stuff and we will have a donation button up in case any of you want to help us pay for the server. It could take up to 3 days for the server to be ready. Once it's ready we will make the move and hopefully not have anymore problems :) So Big Thank You to Nouk and Kathy!!

Well this is the first time i could get to PMBD or MATY since tuesday. I think it was tuesday? I couldnt even get to SFV. Im glad to see this forum & all here are well.

Was PMBD, MATY & SFV attacked as well? All i got was a 404 error *Or what ever its called lol* when trying to access this site. Same with SFV.

More reasons why Nouk and Kathy are awesome!

As for the livejournal thing, I read about that dpni thing. Didn't really care much about it since I'm no way involved with russian politics. Nor do I care if LJ starts sensoring. I can always go somewhere else. *shrug*

I'm really wondering why people keep asking if PMBD/MATY/SFV are getting hit. I haven't had any problems with them at all but it seems like a bunch of others are. I think it's probably just high traffic from normal people or they need to clear their cache. Or something else easily explained.

Title: BIG THANK YOU!!

I'm on dialup, using FFox, and I have had ZERO problems getting into PMBD or MATY. SFV, I haven't tried.

Clear history, clear cache, use FireFox, try again.

So is this the norm and acceptable to have a host where you have to go through hell and high water to speak to a live tech support person?

Pretty much, yeah. Tech support is traditionally both awful and clueless when it comes to the webhosting business.

Post by: chemistrycourtney on 2007 July 01, 14:29:14
I decided to email her to find out if there was anything i could do to help, and if there was a donation drive, i'd be happy to donate to it, etc.  this was my reply back.

"Hi
Thank you for your email.
We were having alot of problems (attacks, host refusing to investigate, cpu usage hit the max allowed, etc) and decided to purchase a server.
I just bought the server yesterday and it will take about 3 days before it will be ready for me. Then we will be going through the moving process. So it will still be a little bit longer before my site, and all the other hosted sites will be back online.
All the content has been backed up so nothing will be lost in the process :)
Thank you for your support and kindness, I am hoping all will go back to normal soon.

no problem.  i was surprised that i got such a prompt response back in my email box.  (i'd just sent the email the day before.)  With as busy as they've all been trying to sort out the mess with their sites, I more figured they could read my email for morale boosts and a nice thinking of you quality, but since I got the reply, I figured everyone would want to know the general progress.   :)   I'll be glad for all of those sites when it gets back up and running again.  I'm sure they will be as well.

Ok, so not to keep talking about this, but there's a new message at Wicked Sims 2.  Here it is:

Update July 5: Purchased a server and am working on setting it up. Unfortunately I have never setup a server before so I'm trying to figure it out and am looking for help. Once it is ready we will be in the process of moving. Please be patient :)

Ok, so i have no idea how to set up servers, but maybe some of you do, and could help them out?  That's it for my update on Wicked Sims 2.  I'll keep looking until they work again...

Right. Tell her that I need the IP and root password. If she doesn't have this information, then she also does not have a real server, which would explain the problem.

Welcome to Sims2 Like It Hot
Fashion News
July 22nd, 2007

I am sorry! No update. And it will take some time...
You do ask yourself why? Well, let me explain it to you all:
Due to the discussions all over the Sims2 Community about destroying paysites I have been thinking alot about it lately. I'm not a big supporter of paysites but they do exist and they won't disappear. EA doesn't make a clear statement, so what are the reasons for some people to force other sites to close because they offer pay content?
Those people are worse than each of the paysite owners. They think they can judge about others, steal the work of them and offer it on so-called "pirate sites".
Congratulations, you all are the world's greatest heroes. Ever.
Did you ever consider that you are going to destroy the existing community as well? That you you are also cause hatred against free sites?
Thanks alot of taking away the fun creating stuff for the Sims2.

I just support Solander's decision to take Pimp My Sims offline for some days.
