And this is why I don't have a facebook, or a twitter. I might not be as anonymous online as I'd like to be, but I'm not interested in 'fame'. I'd rather be obscure.

I'm on Facebook, but it's not because I have any delusions about me being very interesting. I held out until a couple of weeks ago when I realized I was just missing out on too much. People announce parties there, send invitations to concerts and plays and parties, share info on things you want to know about (like study groups and exam times)... I very rarely post anything there, but I know what's going on in other people's lives and I'm on their friends list, so they don't forget about me either. I've become a much more social creature since I signed up and I'm happy for it.

So yeah, you do get your attention whores, just like everywhere else online, but not everyone on Facebook is a speshul snowflake with an over-inflated ego. I tend not to friend those.

I know what you mean.  I keep getting emails from friends with messages like "I got through surgery, ok" when I had no idea what surgery they were having or when.  They assume that they've sent the info to me with the rest of their Facebook friends and then remember at the last minute I'm not on there so I only get the afterthought messages.

My husband claims to know how to set it up so that it doesn't send emails out to everyone you ever got a message from inviting them to join or friend you or whatever it is, over and over and over again, but I'm skeptical.

I mostly end up spamming game junk to all my friends, but since at least half of my friends are why I'm playing most of those facebook games, they can deal.

I only signed up to facebook because someone close to me invited me, and only got a twitter whn I was running a radio station, to -make- announcements and to let folks poke me if for some reason the game the station was out of wasn't actually up.

On the other hand, it was drama, twitter and facebook that indirectly -ruined- my station too.
